ROWE -- Dan Rowe of Calgary, AB, passed away on November 13, 1997 at the age of 42 years. He is survived by his loving daughter Sara and his son David; as well as many, many family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at Wesley United Church, 1315 - 7 Street S.W., Calgary, AB on Tuesday, November 18, 1997 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Tom McLaughlin officiating. Arrangements and Cremation entrusted to PERSONAL ALTERNATIVE FUNERAL SERVICES, 7016 Farrell Road S.E. Telephone: 216-5111.

RYDLICKI -- Lena Meta (nee Baitneryte) passed away peacefully on November 16, 1997 at the Agape Manor Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. Lena is survived by her daughter Julia Allan of Calgary; sons, Gerald of Terrace, BC, Michael of Calgary, and Robert of New Zealand; her sister Meta and family in Australia; and by seven grandchildren. Lena will be lovingly remembered by her family and many friends. Prayer Services will be held at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, 830 - 21 Avenue S.E., Calgary, on Tuesday, November 18, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, November 19, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Stefan Ganowicz, Celebrant. Interment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Agape Manor Hospice, 1302 - 8 Avenue N.W., Calgary, T2N 1B8. SKIPPEN -- Ella. Mrs. Ella Skippen of Camrose, formerly of Calgary, passed away on November 15, 1997 at the age of 94 years. She is survived by one daughter Wilma (Andy) Birchill of Lougheed; one son Grant (Doris) Skippen of Camrose; five grandchildren, David, Adele, AnneMarie, Doug and Karen; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Roy in 1977, as well as her brothers and sisters. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 18 at 2:00 p.m. from Messiah Lutheran Church, Camrose (corner of 50 Street and 48A Avenue) with Pastor David Saude officiating. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Bethany Long Term Care Centre, L.A.M.P. (Lutheran Air Ministry Pilots), or a charity of one's choice. TOWNSHEND -- ELIZABETH MORISON TOWNSHEND 1910 - 1997 Elizabeth Morison Townshend passed away peacefully at Bow View Manor on November 13, 1997. Our thanks to the kind and helpful staff of Bow View Manor and Dr. Patrick Quail. Raised in New England, Elizabeth spent her winters in Boston and her summers at the family farm near Peterborough, New Hampshire. In 1933 she graduated from Bryn Mawr in history with her junior year at Radcliffe. From 1934 to 1940 she worked in Washington, D.C. as historian for the National Park Service and Editor of Bureau of Indian Affairs publications for Commissioner John Collier. In 1941 she worked as Assistant Editor to the Atlantic Monthly in Boston. From March 1944 to November 1945 she worked again in an editorial capacity for the American Office of War Information in London, England. On July 14, 1945, Elizabeth married a Canadian, a Can-Loan Officer to the British Army, Captain James Stuart Townshend, grandson of Col. Macleod who named Calgary. Since 1946 she has lived in Canada, and since 1948 in Calgary. She contributed greatly to the community life in Calgary. From 1951 to 1952, as Educational Chairman of the Junior League of Calgary, she headed the "Fun With Books" radio program. She helped set up the Junior Books program in Calgary. She served as the Chair of the Picture Rental and Sales Committee at the Coste House and Vice-President of the Women's Committee for the Allied Arts Centre. She belonged to a local book club. A writer herself, she wrote and published short stories, children's stories and radio dramas for the CBC and American magazines. After thirty years, she returned to university and graduated with a B.Ed. from the University of Calgary in 1967 as a remedial reading specialist. She worked in vocational schools and tutored privately. Elizabeth is survived by son James Macleod Townshend, his wife Joanne and two grandsons, Shane and Eric; daughter Nancy Frazer Townshend, her husband Donald Smith and two grandsons, David and Peter; sisters, Babette Weir and Mary Jacoby; brother Horace Morison and many adoring nieces, nephews and cousins. A Service will be held at the Unitarian Church of Calgary, 1703 - 1 Street N.W., on Thursday, November 20, 1997 at 1:30 p.m. A reception in the Wickenden Hall at the Church will follow immediately after. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Unitarian Church of Calgary or a charity of your choice. FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Directors. Telephone: 297-0888.

VANDERVELDE -- Gerald Andrew, beloved husband of Mrs. Janet VanderVelde of Strathmore, AB, passed away at the Strathmore District Health Service on November 14, 1997 at the age of 81 years. He is the loving father of Allan (Linda) of Calgary and Don (Florence) of Strathmore, AB. Gerald is survived by his three grandchildren, Shaun (Arlana), Scott (Nickole) and Michael; great-grandchildren, Cody and Jess. He is also survived by his sisters, Jo Chilton of Red Deer, AB, Julia Chalmers of Strathmore, AB, Helen Bishop of Langdon, AB, Marge Parker of Calgary; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel of MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME on Monday, November 17, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Gil Arthur officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. VAINIO -- At Sarnia General Hospital on Sunday, November 16, 1997, Carol Joan (Castle) Vainio, age 59 of R.R. No. 1, Wyoming. Beloved wife of the late Raine Vainio (1996). Dear mother of Kirsti Nutt and her husband Ron of London, and Brett Vainio and his wife Laurie of Calgary. Loving grandmother of Shawn and Kelsey Nutt, and Shea and Chelsea Vainio. WEGENER -- Irene May Wegener passed away peacefully on November 15, 1997. Irene is lovingly remembered by her sons, Earl (Eva), Lorne (Theresa), and his children, Carra, Travis and Chad; her sister Marie Brown; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Irene was predeceased by her beloved husband Carl and her brother Henry Poffenroth. She was a loving wife, mother, nana and friend and she will be missed by everyone who knew her. ALLAN -- On November 18, 1997, Lynda Gail, late of Delta, B.C., aged 49 years. Survived by her daughter Angie Allan; mother Vicky McMillian; sisters, Bonnie McMillian (Dee), Wendy (Craig) Daws; niece Erin; nephew Collin; loving friend Patti; special friends, Jim, John, Rusty, Troch. Friendship gathering in memory of Lynda will be held Sunday, November 23 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Hillside Boy's and Girl's Club, 11339 - 84 Avenue, Delta. BURLAND -- Dr. George Russell, beloved husband of Frances, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on November 16, 1997 at the age of 73. Dr. Burland came to Olds in 1953 where he practiced family medicine and general surgery until his retirement in 1989. George is survived by his loving wife Frances; children, Rich (Corinne), Rob (Sue), Brian (Lori), Margie (Dave), Trish (Dan); brother Jim; six grandchildren; several cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends. Dr. Burland obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba. He was a member of the Canadian and Alberta Medical Associations, Alberta Surgical Association, a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons Canada and the American College of Surgeons. He was also elected life member of the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1993. His appointments included Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary, President of the Alberta Coroners Association, member Admissions Committee of the American College of Surgeons, Standing Committees Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons, Advisory Board Central Alberta Cancer Clinic, an active staff and Chief, Department of Surgery Olds Hospital. Dr. Burland was very active in the community. He was past president of the Olds Elks Hockey and Curling Clubs, one of the founding members of the Olds Kiwanis Club, councilor for the Town of Olds, member of the Mountain View Health Unit, Olds Flying Club and B.P.O.E. (lifetime). A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, November 21, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. from the Royal Canadian Legion, Olds. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Olds Hospital in care of the Dr. George R. Burland Memorial Fund. MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL CHAPELS, Olds, entrusted with arrangements.
