Janet was the second daughter born to Ken and Ella Park. She was born and raised in Edmonton and earned her RN degree from University of Alberta in September 1961. She nursed at the U of A Hospital for 2 years following graduation and spent nearly 2 years travelling and working abroad in England, Barbados and Europe with her close friend Helen. To this day she remained close to her friendships gained during nursing abroad including Joyce and Evelyn.

After returning home she met and married Ed in September 1966, living most of their life in St. Albert. The best thing that happened to Janet and Ed was the birth of Keith and Kerri-Lynn. She stayed home with Keith and Kerri for the early years and returned to nursing once they were established in school. She enjoyed being a camp nurse for school, brownie and cub camps. She spent time nursing at U of A, Rockyview, Royal Alex, Sturgeon General and the Miesericordia.

Janet’s favorite times were spent travelling with the family including summer vacations in Invermere, family ski-trips and Hawaii. Between kids and family they have travelled across North America from coast to coast spending much time in Arizona and California.

Janet was a founding member of the St. Albert Quilters Guild and takes great pride in the quilts she has made for her loved ones. Her favorite pastimes were quilting, playing bridge and golfing with Ed and friends.

Janet and Ed were married for 46 years. She appreciates her best friend Ed and her family who have always been there for her. In recent years she was very grateful for all the support from friends made at the gym, quilting, bridge and nursing.

Janet is survived by her loving husband, Ed; one son, Keith (Lise); one daughter, Kerri-Lynn (Myron) and her five beautiful grandchildren: Ty, Kyle, Kendall, Allie and Nicole; her sister, Barb. She was predeceased by her parents, Ken and Ella; brother, Ronald.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Valerie Capstick, Dr. Ken Chow and the staff at Sturgeon General and Edmonton General (9Y) for all the compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, May, 24, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Albert United Church, 20 Green Grove Dr., St. Albert, AB. Cremation.

MARSHALL, Ellen Margaret (nee Keen)

May 16, 1931 to May 28, 2013

It is with much sadness and regret to announce the passing of Ellen, a dear Wife, Mother, Aunt and Friend to all who knew her .

Ellen leaves to mourn her great loss, her husband of 58 years, Harry; son, Cameron; one brother, Alex (Joan); numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by one son, Kenneth; her parents, Albert and Mary Keen; Uncle, Alex Stuart; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Irene Rowe and a dear mother-in-law, Katie Marshall.

Ellen received her entire education at Oliver School in Edmonton, then accepted a position with the City of Edmonton where she spent many years in the taxation and land assessment dept. of the mechanical accounting office. It was during this time that she met and married Harry on June 4, 1955. Harry was also employed by the city of Edmonton in the payroll dept. Ellen and Harry became skillful in the operation of many machines used in the “Univac” punched=card system of accounting--- the fore-runner of our present day computers.

Ellen and Harry were always deeply involved in the activities of local United Churches, particularly Kirk United in Edmonton, as well as North Vancouver United and more recently Westlock United. During this time Ellen was cited to receive the prestigious award of Life Membership in the United Church Women of Canada.

During their lifetime together, they relocated on several occasions. Their first ten years were spent in Edmonton, followed by a nine year stint in North Vancouver, where Harry was employed with General Paint Corp. and later with the Municipal Dist. of North Vancouver, in the capacity of installing and managing Univac accounting systems. The family eventually returned to reside in Edmonton where their two young sons could pursue their life dream of professional hockey. At this point career changes occurred and Ellen became a store merchandiser for Hallmark cards, while Harry became a travelling sales agent for several wholesale hardware concerns in Edmonton for many years.

As time progressed and the age of computers became more common, they took on the role of live-in caretakers at Mountwood Senior’s residence in west Edmonton, where constant care and attention to the needs of seniors became of prime importance.

As their own retirement years approached, they decided to move to Westlock’s, Brookside Village, a beautiful senior’s residential condo, where Harry again took on the task of caretaker and president of this new organization. It was during this period of time when Ellen’s health began to falter, and in an effort to achieve a more relaxed life pattern, they later bought their present home in Westlock. Gardening had always been a favorite hobby for Ellen and here she was able to take life at a slower pace, yet still keeping involved with other favorite activities.

The family acknowledge with thanks the care extended to Ellen by the Westlock Continuing Care Unit, as well as the medical staff who made her stay so much more comforting.

In compliance with Ellen’s wishes cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held.

Those who wish to make a memorial donation may do so directly to the Mission and Service Fund of The United Church of Canada,3250 Bloor St W Toronto, ON M8X 2Y4 or the Westlock Food Bank, #5,9719-99 St., Westlock, AB T7P 1Y5 or charity of your choice.
