DRUMMOND -- Brian John

The family of Brian Drummond regretfully announces his passing on May 28, 2006 in Drumheller, Alberta. Brian is survived by his mother Grace and brothers Robert and Bruce. At the family’s request, Brian’s cremated remains will be interred in Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, Ontario. JOHNSTON -- Leona “Lee” 1917 - 2006

It is with great sadness that the family of Lee Johnston announces her passing on June 10, 2006 at the Drumheller Health Centre. Lee is survived by her sister Mary’s son, Dr. Douglas Barfield of Minnesota, USA as well as several local relatives by marriage. Lee was born to Ann and Fred Bespalko in 1917 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. Following the passing of her father when Lee was small, her mother and sister Mary moved to Aerial, Alberta where they resided until adulthood. Lee became quite renowned for her exceptional abilities as a beautician/stylist and she practiced her trade in her self-owned salon in Edmonton, Alberta for a number of years. Lee met and then married Victor Johnston in 1974 and continued her career as a beautician until her retirement. she then moved to Drumheller, Alberta where she taught her beautician techniques to the Drumheller Institution inmates. A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at 2:00 PM. from St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Drumheller, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Lee to a charity of one’s choice. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Chapel entrusted with arrangements.

KEMBALL -- Catherine 1977 - 2006

On May 29, 2006, Catherine Kemball passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer.
Survived by her loving fiancee Joel Ouellette; her parents Jim and Kathy; sister Paula; two brothers Doug and Sean; as well as many relatives and dear friends. A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at 1:00 PM. at Christian Life Centre, 10123 Princess Elizabeth Avenue. Thank you to everyone for their cards and support.

PORTER -- Albert Bain 1925 - 2006

Born September 21, 1925 went to be with the Lord on June 8, 2006 at the age of 80. He was born in Cullen, Scotland. Albert served with Her Majesty’s Navy in WWII as a minesweeper. He married Inge in 1950 and moved to Canada in 1957 where he worked as a butcher until 1961 when he worked as a Steward at Stony Mountain Penitentiary. They moved to Drumheller in 1967 and Al worked at the Drumheller Penitentiary first as Head Steward, working his way to Assistant Warden until 1986 when he retired. He enjoyed gardening and camping in the Rockies. He is survived by Inge, his loving wife of 55 years; their son Ian in Calgary; their daughter Donna (Randy); granddaughters Rachel and Kristi; ‘adopted’ daughter Joan; and many close friends and great neighbours. A Memorial Service will be held at Everden Rust Funeral Services (1130 Carmi Ave., Penticton) on Wednesday, June 14 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Kidney Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

MANDELIN -- Anne (Riggs)

Anne (Riggs) Mandelin passed away on June 18, 2006. There will be a graveside service on June 24, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. at the Morrin Cemetery.

URBANIAK -- Mrs. Aniela Urbaniak

Mrs. Aniela Urbaniak of Strathmore, formerly of Drumheller, passed away comfortably at the Calgary Foothills Hospital on June 12, 2006 at the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her loving husband Roman in 1999, and leaves to mourn her son Ron and daughter-in-law Dawn; and grandchildren Kimberly, Christopher, and his wife Andrea. An interment service was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14 at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Strathmore with Father Dominic Hung Nguyen as celebrant. We love you Babcia. Forever and Always.

GERLINGER -- Michelle Rena 1951 - 2006

Michelle left this world to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 26, 2006. With her family by her side, Michelle went with grace to receive her rewards in Heaven after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis and cancer. Michelle is survived by her husband of 31 years, Richard (Joe) Gerlinger of East Coulee; son Jeff (Jamie) Gerlinger of Drumheller; daughter Jaimie Lee of Airdrie; and one expected grandchild. Michelle is also survived by her brother Miles Muzyka of Tortola BVI; Aunt Joyce Reniak of Medicine Hat; and numerous cousins. Surviving in-laws of Michelle are mother-in-law Elizabeth Gerlinger of East Coulee; sister-in-law Betty McLachlan of Red Deer; brothers-in-law, Don (Linda) Gerlinger of East Coulee, Pete (Donna) Gerlinger of Brandon, MB, Jim (Debbie) Gerlinger of Drumheller; as well as several nieces and nephews. Michelle is predeceased by her parents, Mike and Marion Muzyka, of Creston, B.C. Funeral services for Michelle will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at 1:00 PM at the Drumheller Church of the Nazarene. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Drumheller Continuing Care Pastoral Care Committee.

PALLESEN -- Gary Wayne 1944 - 2006

Gary Pallesen passed away on June 17, 2006 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer at the age of 62 years. Gary is survived by his mother, Jeanne Fields (Pallesen) of Calgary; daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Jim Burden; grandchildren, Taylor and Michelle of Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Chris Pallesen; grandchildren Kaley and Wace of Strathmore; son, Shawn Pallensen of Mexico; sister, Donna Easy (Pallesen) of Red Deer; and other numerous relatives. Gary was predeceased by his father Ralph Pallesen in 1977. Gary will be remembered for his outgoing personality, eternal optimism and his love of animals, especially his dog Lucky. Gary’s children wish to thank the staff of Unit 59 of the Rocky View Hospital for their excellent care. Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Mountain View Funeral Home (Garden Rd. and 17 Ave. S.E., Calgary) at 2:00 PM. PORTER -- Inge Franziska Theresia 1930 - 2006

Inge Franziska Theresia Porter born January 11, 1930 went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2006. She was predeceased on June 8, 2006 by her loving husband, Albert. Inge was born in Koln (Cologne), Germany. She survived the Koln bombing and subsequently moved to Scotland, where she met Albert in 1949. They were married in 1950 and moved to Canada in 1957 where she worked as an office worker until Ian was born in 1962. Donna was born in 1964 and they moved to Drumheller in 1967. Inge did a fantastic job as housewife and mother until Albert retired in 1987. Inge and Al were avid campers and loved camping in the Rockies. They especially loved Protection Mountain near Banff where they have requested to rest together. She is survived by their son, Ian of Calgary; daughter Donna (Randy) and granddaughters Rachel and Kristi of Penticton; “adopted” daughter Joan of Calgary; and many close friends, relatives and wonderful neighbours. A service was held on Monday, June 26 at 3:00 PM. at EVERDEN RUST FUNERAL SERVICES 1130 Carmi Ave., Penticton. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

SWEEP -- Helen October 26, 1924 - June 20, 2006

Helen passed away at the age of 81 years at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre. She was predeceased by her husband Bob on June 13, 1990. She is survived by her son Robert (Evalina) of Calgary; son Miles (Anna) and granddaughters Alannah-Myles and Ashlee of The Woodlands in Texas; and her daughter Helen Anne (Dale) and grandsons Craig and Carson of Ponoka. Helen was raised in Midland then attended Business School and later worked at Canadian Utilities in Drumheller. After having children, Helen stayed home to care for her family. She was involved as a member of the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary, participated actively in bowling, watched a lot of sports on T.V. and loved to go to the casino. Her most memorable moments were those spent with her family and she was extremely proud of her grandchildren. Helen spent her last year living in Ponoka at Legacy Place, which is a senior’s facility, where she was well looked after and gave her the opportunity to spend more time with her children and grandchildren. A family visitation took place at the Ponoka Funeral Home on Friday, June 23. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, June 26 at 12:00 PM at the Knox United Church in Drumheller. CLARK -- Marshall King

Mr. Marshall King Clark, formerly of Rosebud, passed away in Castor on July 27, 2006 at the age of 91 years. Marshall is survived by his family Marsha Clark of Castor; Brian (Lynnette) Clark of Consort; Mary deJong of Castor; and Jeannette (Ron) Parkin of Monitor. Grandchildren -- April, Daphne and Jamie Comstock, Marci and Kari-Malcolm Clark, Kim, Kory, Melanie and Bonnie deJong. Twenty-seven great-grandchildren and numerous chosen children. Marshall is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Memorial services for the late Mr. Marshall Clark will be held at the Brennen Funeral Home Chapel, 4819 - 49th Street in Stettler, AB on Friday, July 7, 2006 at 2:00 PM. KASHUBA -- Larry Gene November 7, 1946 - June 27, 2006

Larry Gene Kashuba passed away peacefully on June 27, 2006 at his home in Rumsey.Larry was born in Drumheller November 7, 1946 to Nick and Lena Kashuba. He was raised in Rumsey, where he grew up and continued farming until his passing. His family meant a lot to him. He was predeceased by his parents, Nick (1991) and Lena (1994) and his brother David (1979). He is survived by his brothers -- Walter (Kathy), George (Maureen) and their children Kyle, Jordan and Kierstin; sister-in-law Anna Kashuba and her children Corrina, Sheldon and Shauna; twin brother Stephen (Carol) and their children Kevin and Kelly; Dennis and his children Nicole and Wesley; and sister Susan McIntyre. Larry is also survived by great-nephews and nieces and his Aunt Jeanette and Uncle Bill Kowalachuk.

Larry was a great brother, uncle and friend. He loved farming, watching hockey, going to auctions, driving a tractor, and driving around Alberta’s countryside. Larry will be a presence who will be missed by many, especially those who he humbly and willingly helped around the town, whether it was his brother with mechanics, or a neighbour in need of a hand. In the spirit of Larry’s love of auctions we lovingly “bid” him farewell.

A memorial celebration of Larry’s life was held in the Rumsey Community Hall on June 30, 2006, with Pastor Skip MacArthur presiding. RUSSELL -- Keith Wayne

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Keith Wayne Russell after a year long battle with cancer, a battle he fought with courage and dignity. Keith was born in Medicine Hat, but moved with his parents shortly thereafter to a farm in the Gaetz area, west of Red Deer. In 1967 he was married to Connie (nee Erickson) and they took up residence in Carstairs, Alberta. Keith obtained his welder first class certificate in 1975 and it was the oil patch that brought him to Drumheller in 1980. But he found his true calling in building the steel structure for the skeletal mounts that appear in the Royal Tyrrell Museum. He continued this career as part owner of Prehistoric Animal Structures for 13 years. Keith is survived by his wife and best friend, Connie; his sons Mitch and wife Dawn, Danny and wife Cheri; his daughter JoAnne and husband Greg Stone; his sister Fay and husband Ed Stenvig; and his mother Beatrice Russell; as well as many in laws and nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He will also be lovingly remembered by his 9 grandchildren -- Alex, Matthew, Larissa, Bradley, Travis, Mitchell, Samantha, Meaghan and his “special” grandson Chandler, whom he had affectionately nicknamed “Chug”. Funeral services will take place at the Drumheller Church of the Nazarene on Thursday, July 6 at 2:30 PM. with reception to follow at the East Coulee Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chandler’s school, to be put towards a piece of equipment in his educational program. BARR -- Shirley 1925 - 2006

Shirley Barr (nee Skibsted) passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary, AB, on July 2, 2006, at the age of 81 years. Shirley will be remembered with love by her children and their partners -- Don and Barb, Wendy and Barry, and Valerie and Randy, as well as her grandchildren -- Shelley, Robyn, Beau, Ashley, James, Hilary, Kimberly, Darren and Jennifer. Shirley will also be remembered by her great grandchildren -- Tess, William, Mary, Augustus, Ashley, Alex, Sydney, Ethan and Kai, as well as her sister Norma Blair, brothers Vern and Willard Skibsted, and her nieces and nephews, who were very special to Auntie Shirley. She was predeceased by her son Gordon, her husband Rial, her parents Gladys and Carl, her brothers, Donny, Bob and Eric, her sister Grayce, her great niece Janine, and her great nephew Jordan. Shirley was a proud Albertan. She was born on April 11, 1925 in Drumheller, AB. She grew up in Beynon and moved to Calgary with her family as a young girl. There, she attended Rideau Park School and Western Canada High School. Shirley worked in the Bank of Toronto in Calgary for several years before marrying Rial in 1946. Rial was the love of her life. They raised their children and farmed for nearly 50 years at the Owl Ranch at Rosebud. Shirley was an active and dedicated member of the local community. She strongly believed in the preservation of our history, and worked to restore and maintain the Rosebud Museum, and helped to write the Rosebud History Book. She took great pleasure in selecting and giving readings at local showers and events. Shirley was a deeply creative person. She could turn anything, from a lunchbox to an old necktie, into a work of art. Many family and friends are proud owners of a quilt, “Made with love by Shirley”. She had a true sense of fun and adventure. Whether sifting through hidden treasures in a garbage dump in Yellowknife, exploring and getting lost in the streets of Copenhagen, or walking through an old cemetery, Shirley was always eager to try or learn something new. Shirley was a passionate person. She approached life with clear values and a profound faith. She so loved her family and friends, children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Shirley taught us to laugh hard, love deeply and give with all of our hearts. A Memorial Service was held at the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at 2:00 PM.. FLETT -- Orval

Orval Flett, passed away on July 5, 2006 at the Foothills Hospital surrounded by loved ones at the age of 89 years. Orval lived out his entire life on the Flett homestead in the Hand Hills. He is survived by his sister June and brother-in-law Les Campbell, brother-in-law Fred Courtney and sisters-in-law Jean and Aileen Flett. Orval leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends Mary and Randy James. He is predeceased by his parents Lester and Mildred Flett. Brothers -- Elmer, Lloyd, Gordon, Marvin, Ralph and Dale. Sisters -- Olive (Dick) Cosgrave, Orlo (Lawrence) Hickey, Mary (John) McNab and Ilene Courtney. Nephews -- Kerry Flett , Bob Cosgrave and Richard Cosgrave.
