LEONHARDT -- Jacob August 8, 1909 - September 27, 2006

Jacob was born in Calgary on August 8, 1909. The following summer his family moved to the Drumheller area and homesteaded a quarter section of land. A few of the many endeavors they undertook were; hunting, selling pelts, firewood, dressed pork and beef and other farm products in their fight for survival. A cave in the banks of Red Deer River served as their home for the next three years. Later they farmed near the Livingston School where at age 10 Jacob began his education. When his father passed away, this ended Jacob’s education. By age 14 he obtained grade 7 and took on the role of a man. On his 28th birthday, August 8, 1937, Jacob married Margaret Birkheim and they began their family of 12 children. The Church was their main social outlet and Jacob took great pride in various roles from planning the building, serving as an elder, decorating the Christmas tree to carving turkey for wedding receptions. As life became easier, in the Centennial year, Jacob designed and had a new home built on the farm. He and Margaret enjoyed tours of the West Coast, Alaska, Florida, Los Angeles, and the Maritimes. Once retired, in 1976 Jacob and Margaret moved to their “Dream Home” in Drumheller. The Pioneer Trail Centre became their entertainment as they looked forward to playing cards and shooting pool with friends. Life threw Jacob another curve when he was diagnosed with cancer. His drive and zest for life kept him with us until September 27, 2006. Jacob was proud to be a true pioneer of Alberta and at 97 he was the oldest living male Leonhardt. Jacob is survived by the everlasting love of his life, his wife Margaret; his loving family of 11 children, Gerald (Janice), Daniel (Maureen), Marjorie (Paul Turner), Genevieve (Munroe), Linda (Bob MacIntyre), Barbara (Allan Simpson), Harvey (Linda), Patricia (Jim Bechthold), Sharon (Thompson), Carmen (Gary Gutsche) and Alvin; 24 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; brother, Walter Leonhardt; sister, Amelia Walker. Jacob was predeceased by a daughter, Verna Ester in infancy in 1952; brothers, Herbert, Fredrick, Reinhart, Edward, August and Victor; sisters, Eugenia Lippolt and Alma Naffin. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at 1:30 pm at the Grace Lutheran Church, Drumheller, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Jacob to the Drumheller Cancer Clinic, 351-9th Street NW, Drumheller, Alberta, T0J 0Y1 or the Grace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 620-2nd Avenue West, T0J 0Y3. GUTWALD -- Mark Stephen 1959 - 2006

Mark Stephen, devoted husband, loving father and beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2006. He leaves to mourn -- his best friend, soul-mate, high school sweetheart and wife of almost 25 years, Dixie (nee -- LaBerge); three children he was so proud of, Stephen, Tyler and Danielle; parents, Patricia and Ralph Gutwald; brother Craig (Judy) Gutwald; sisters, Catherine (Pat) Bonneville, Shelley (Dale) Bergman, Licia (Steve) Pickup, brother-in-law Michael Szarmes, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mark will also be lovingly remembered by -- his aunts, uncles and their families as well as Dixie’s extended family. He is now with his sister Alyson in heaven.

Mark was born on March 13, 1959 in Edmonton, AB and grew up in Drumheller. In Calgary he resourcefully started out as a mechanic to support his young family. After he completed his apprenticeship, he also challenged all of the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) exams at one time to receive Master Auto Technician certification. His honesty, integrity and work ethic made it difficult for his customers to see him change professions when he returned to school (SAIT) at 37 years old. There he completed Electronics Engineering Technology and Mechatronics Engineering Technology. Mark’s creativity shone through in his exceptional cooking, his ability to fix and improve anything inside or outside the home, his love of music and his incredible artistic drawings and designs. A remarkable mind, his love of knowledge and truth - be it moral, spiritual or scientific - will live on in his children. Mark lived a simple life and loved nothing more than to spend time with his wife and family. From a romantic midnight walk to a game of Bocce in the snow, his children saw their parents have so much fun together - “they were like kids”. He loved discussions and long conversations where he could share his knowledge. He was always there when his family needed him. Mark’s quick wit and “punny” jokes (just like his dad Ralph) always made people smile and he always made an effort to make people feel good. He had a special affinity with animals and will be sorely missed by his “grandpuppy” Shyla. Mark’s main purpose on earth was fulfilled in raising his three children and they will never forget his wise teachings. He has left this world a better place.

A Celebration of Mark’s Life will be held in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made in Mark’s name directly to a charity of your choice. To email expressions of sympathy -- subject heading -- Mark Gutwald. Arrangements entrusted to MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY, 17 Avenue SE at Garden Road, (1.5 km east of 84th Street SE ). Telephone (403) 272 - 5555.
