BRITTON, Joyce Elizabeth
Joyce, of Parksville BC, passed away at Nanaimo Hospital on April 6, 2011. Joyce was born at Lafleche Sk on October 8, 1930. She spent her childhood in Melaval SK with her parents, Walter and Kathleen Mackin and sisters, Marilyn, Karen and Joanne. She will be reunited with her family in heaven; her father, mother, Marilyn, Barb and special friend Pat, who she called my son, my son. Joyce is survived by her sister Karen and family, Calvin (Cindy), Kathy (Jim), Leslie (Murray) and Scott, Joanne and her children, Sherry (Dave), Sandra (William), Marilyn's family, Wendy, Jill (Dave), Blair (Bonnie) and several nieces and nephews. Joyce Elizabeth attended elementary school in Melaval and high school in Lafleche. She attended the Regina General Hospital Nursing program, afterwards nursing in Regina, Saskatoon Winnipeg and Toronto, then eventually at the Cancer Clinic in Vancouver until her retirement to Parksville. She met and married Lee Broderick in 1956. Bill Britton and Doug Dickson also shared in Joyce's love of adventure and life. Joyce was a spunky, adventurous, spontaneous, entertaining woman. She had a great zest for life and her carefree spirit took her to all parts of the world. One of her greatest loves was to sail in the open sea. She enjoyed skiing, hunting and golfing. Joyce was well educated and loved to read, she especially enjoyed her book club. She shared her love of cards with many family and friends. Joyce welcomed her Saskatchewan family with open arms, always putting on the Ritz. She had a flare for the fine things in life, Good Food, Good Company, Good Wine. Joyce lived life to the fullest, from quiet sister walks on the beach to dancing the night away with friends. Joyce will be missed by all of us. When God reached out, she was ready. A Celebration of Life was held on April 12, 2011 at the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club.

Peacefully on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 in her 83rd year. Beloved wife of Ervin Bronson, wonderful mother of Judy (Bob), Carole (Serge), and Cindy (Henry). Private family service only. BRYDGES, Joan Margaret
After a long and full life, Joan Margaret Brydges left us suddenly at home on December 20, 2011. Born in Birmingham, England on January 19, 1927. Remembered and loved by her family, husband Anthony, sons Tracy (Donna), Mark, Wesley (Susan), and daughter Victoria (Mark), granddaughters Sarah (Ryan), and Larissa (Mike), great grandsons Colton and Linkin, sister Mary and brother Doug and many other family and friends. One of her greatest loves is nature and all its beauty, a loving friend to all God’s creatures. BUTT, Michael Thomas
Michael Thomas Butt died on November 29th, 2011 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC. Michael had demonstrated incredible strength and willpower over the course of many years as he fought kidney failure, Wegener’s Granulomatosis, as well as a long list of other illnesses. His struggles came to an end as he passed away peacefully with family by his side. Born in Kingston, Ontario in 1951, Michael lived 60 years as a man of true honor. Faithful to life’s values and kind to all, he has inspired many people on his journey through life. His sense of humour and ability to stay positive in even the most challenging times is what will be remembered most. Predeceased by his father Douglas and brother Gordon, Michael leaves behind his daughters Karen (David), Colleen (Brian), and Christine, granddaughters Keira, Christina, Madison and Mackenzie, mother Gladys and brothers Doug (Kelly) and Don (Gilda). A service will be held in Michael’s honour at the Nanaimo Golf Club on Tuesday, December 6th at 2:30. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
CARMICHAEL, John William (Bill)
1927 to 2011
Bill was born in Edmonton, AB, to mother Edith and father Jim, and grew up there with brother Jay and sister Dawne. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Alberta, obtaining a M. Sc. in Bacteriology in 1951. In 1954, he graduated from Harvard University with a PhD in Biology. Bill spent his working life at the University of Alberta as a professor in the Bacteriology and Medical Microbiology departments. At the U of A he was published numerous times; participated fully in committee life; was the founder of the U of A Microfungus Collection and Herbarium; and was a respected and talented teacher. Bill was a caring and devoted father to the three sons he had with his first wife Dorothy. Bill had a love of nature and the wild, which he passed on to his boys through summers spent camping or at the cabin at Island Lake. In 1972, Bill reinvented himself. From 1972 to 1983, Bill worked as a part-time professor, splitting his life between Edmonton and his new passion, 27 acres of land in Fanny Bay, Vancouver Island B.C. In 1983, Bill retired and moved with Carol to the acreage, the Coal Creek Stump Farm permanently. It is in the context of his acreage life with Carol, house-builder, and builder of pools in the creek that he will be remembered most fondly by his friends and family. He and Carol were active in Fanny Bay community organizations, and the warm circle of friends they enjoyed enriched his life. At the age of 70 he took up the harmonica and spent many happy hours playing with the Beach Group. Bill passed away peacefully at home on the acreage he loved, cared for to the end by his loving wife Carol McPherson. He is also survived by his sister Dawne, his three sons, Craig, Stuart (Carlotta), and Ian (Margaret), and grandsons James William, Philip, Alexander and Warren. There will be a celebration of Bill's life on the acreage in August. Carol and the family wish to express their warm gratitude to the VIHA home support workers, home care nurses, occupational therapists, and schedulers, to Dr. Janet Green, who helped make it possible for Bill to remain at home, and to the many faithful friends who through their companionship and care supported Bill and Carol. CARTER, Gwendoline Joan
December 6th, 1923 ~ September 30th, 2011
Joan passed away peacefully at Stanford Place, Parksville on the 30th of September, in her 87th year. Joan served as a Royal Navy Nurse during WWII and later married Donovan and immigrated to Canada in 1953. Joan had several books published that spoke of her loving nature. She was also an avid sports person and artist. Moreover, Joan was a terrific wife and a loving and caring mother. Joan will be dearly missed by her husband Donovan, her four sons Myles, Jonathan, Jason, and Michael as well as her five nieces and nephews. A Celebration of her Life will take place in Montreal in July 2012 and will be attended by her family. Special thanks and gratitude go out to the wonderful staff at Stanford Place.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lester (Bullet) Casault. He was a patient and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Jo, two sons Mark (Kellea) with daughter Madison, Bob (Rhonda) and one daughter Leslie (Marc) his grandchildren Robin, Ashley, James, Liam, Aidan, Rowan, and great-grandchildren Chiana and Ailena, as well as many nieces and nephews. CHRISTOPHERSON, Dorothy Frances
April 19, 1924 - October 15, 2011
Dottie passed away peacefully at Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville, BC at the age of 87 years. She leaves to mourn, her husband of 66 years, Howard and her daughters Bonnie Christopherson and Jill (Jim) Chapman. Grandma “Dodie” also leaves four grandchildren; Lisa (Jason) Coulman, Julie (Jason) Harrison, Christie and Jake Chapman, five great-grandchildren; Jaden and Rachel Harrison, Anna and Michael Coulman and Cali Chapman, as well as her sister Jackie (Don) Twitchell. Dottie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Dottie loved to curl and was very active in the Vancouver and Nanaimo Curling Clubs. Dottie also loved to draw and paint and was an excellent seamstress. She was known for her gentle spirit and beautiful smile. The family would like to thank the staff at Arrowsmith Lodge for the loving and compassionate care they gave Dottie for the past three years. A special thanks to Dr. Sulz. A Funeral Service will be held at Yates Funeral Home, 1000 Allsbrook Rd Parksville, BC on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 12:00PM with Rev. Foster Freed officiating and a reception to follow. Interment will take place at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, 2347 Cedar Rd, Cedar, BC after the reception.
CLENDENNING, Margaret Jane (nee Patterson) (Peddle)
Margaret, of Nanaimo, passed away on April 13, 2011. Born Sept 10, 1916 in Victoria B.C. she was predeceased by her mother and father Walter & Margaret Peddle, brother Victor, sister Florence, and first husband Harvey, all of Victoria. Margaret is survived by her two children, Ivor Patterson (Maureen) grandchildren David & Teresa; and Dianne Moore (John) grandchildren Tim, Kathi, & Cody; her step-children, Sheila Benkie grandchildren Barbara & Darren; Loretta Becker (Darren) grandchildren Brad & Megan; and Ken Clendenning (Jacqui) grandchildren Sean, Aaron & Brady; and several great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Margaret was very active in Daughters of the Nile, a past Queen of Miriam Temple, Victoria, and past president of Zora Club, Nanaimo. She was involved in many sports including golf, curling, and bowling; and she worked many years with Meals on Wheels in Nanaimo. A Celebration of Life will be held April 25, 2011, 2 pm at Trinity United Church, 6234 Spartan Rd. Nanaimo.
