Passed away peacefully April 5, 2004 in 100 Mile House, B.C. Born May 19, 1911 in Nakusp, B.C. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Jennie; daughters Rosalie Middlemass (Harvey Gilbert), Deborah Middlemass (Graham Bell), Ruth Pacheco, Gerrie Cotton (Ray) and Sandy Middlemass. Predeceased by daughters Edith Berg (Armand) and Faye Bliss (Ron), and his brother Roy Middlemass (Doris). Also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. In addition, left to mourn are his brother John Middlemass (Louise) and sister Katherine E. Hall and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alex’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A Memorial Service will be held Sat., Aril 10, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the 108 Community Centre.

Peter John Ross passed away peacefully April 4, 2004 in Kelowna, B.C., three months before his 87th birthday. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Joyce Ross; son Peter (Claudette) Ross; daughter Judy (Kirk) Gowans; daughter Sharon (Stan) Frame; son Steven (Tammy) Ross and daughter-in-law Anne Letendre. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Originally from Saskatchewan, Peter spent most of his life in the Bridge Lake/100 Mile House area until moving to Kelowna in May, 2002. An avid hunter and fisherman, friends will remember Peter for his love of the outdoors, his willingness to help others, and his passion for playing crib. No service by request.

Chad Jerry Schapansky, age 23, of Clearwater, B.C. (formerly of 100 Mile House, B.C.) died while performing his duty as a firefighter on March 29, 2004. He will be lovingly remembered by his parents; Sue and Vic Meyer of 100 Mile House and Dan and Marlene Schapansky of Clearwater; and his longtime girlfriend Nicole Waite. Also left with treasured memories are grandparents Jerry and Sharon Schapansky, Elizabeth Morgan and Lois Moore; his sister Brandie-Lynn Schapansky of 100 Mile House; brother Jason Schapansky of Clinton, B.C. (formerly of 100 Mile House); step-siblings Belinda Rempel of Delta, B.C.; Kim Ma of Coquitlam, B.C.; Heather Luxton of Abbotsford, B.C. and Brandon Luxton of North Vancouver, B.C.; uncle John (Jayne) Stokes; ants Debbie (Harold), Kim (Kurt) and Kelly (Ken); many, many cousins; uncle Darrell (Lee) Schapansky; aunts Diane Schapansky, Susan Schapansky and Lynn Schapansky; nephews James, Alex and Marcus Rempel and Spencer Ma. Predeceased by grandfather Gary Morgan. Chad enjoyed his childhood years growing up on the family ranch at 100 Mile House, B.C. His kindheartedness led him to fire fighting, which became his passion. Chad enjoyed everything the outdoors had to offer. He was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. Chad was a very outgoing, fun loving soul who lived his short life to the fullest. He lived his recent years in Clearwater working with his Dad at the family building supply, and belonged to the Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department. In the short six years that Chad and his girlfriend Nicole lived in Clearwater, they made many friends and Chad endeared himself to everyone he met.
We will all miss him greatly.
The family extends special thanks to the Clearwater Fire Department for all their help; and to family and friends. The Funeral Service was held on Mon., April 5, 2004 in the Evangilical Free Church with Pastor Lloyd Strickland and Pastor Ian Moilliet officiating. Following the service, Chad was laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery in Clearwater. A celebration of Chad’s life was also held on Tues., April 6, 2004 in the Forest Grove Community Hall in Forest Grove, B.C. In memory of Chad, the family would appreciate donations made to the Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department Trust Fund c/o Interior Savings Credit Union.

Ivy Lucille Buckland of Williams Lake passed away March 27, 2004 at 82 years of age. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sat., April 3, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at the Lac la Hache Senior’s Activity Centre. He leaves his loving wife Florence; daughter Carol Garvin (Bob); three grandchildren Steven, Sharon and Heather; three step daughters Lorraine Goodrich, Dianne Butler and Pat Lee; two brothers Harry (Norma) and Rae (Jessie); six nephews; several great grandchildren, grandnieces and grand nephews. His younger years were spent in Vancouver but his love for the outdoors brought him to the Cariboo where he built his home on the shore of Oie Lake. He was a brother in the Mt. Begbie Masonic Lodge, receiving his 60 year gold pin in July 2002. On Feb. 11, 1984, he married Florence Hartwig and they have had 20 years of pleasure trips and fun together. Jack was a very quiet, kind and generous person. A bricklayer and stonemason by trade, all who knew him will remember him by his lovely fireplaces and warming chimneys in the area. A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held on Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the 100 Mile Community Health Centre in the 100 Mile Hospital Building. Donations to Mr. Begbie Lodge for Children’s Hospital in lieu of flowers.

BRIGGS, Frederick Lucien (Luke)
Born in Hamilton, Ont. on April 26, 1918 and predeceased by Patricia, his wife of 60 years, Luke died August 20, 2003, after a short illness. Survived by sister Vivienne (George), Westbank, B.C.; children Richard, Maple Ridge, B.C.; Susan (Robert) Vancouver, B.C.; David, San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren Danielle, Greer and Nathan; nephews Brian, Kingston, Ont.; and Gordon, Bermuda; niece Jan, Burnaby, B.C.; and many long-time friends in Maple Ridge, Hope and the Cariboo. Luke lived a long and productive life. As a child, his family moved from Ontario to Sea Island, to Marpole (Vancouver) and to Albion; life in BC shaped Luke's personal, political and professional lives. He worked hard, logging during the Depression, building homes in Vancouver in the 1940s, and working on the Alcan aluminum smelter in Kitimat, the BC Provincial Police and the RCMP in Prince Rupert in the 1950s. He also helped build the Haney Correctional Institute, became a guard and then maintenance foreman. Luke was a pioneer in BC's fledgling helicopter logging industry, and a hotelier, operating Vancouver's Cobalt Hotel. He and Pat moved to the Cariboo in the 1970s, and Luke returned to carpentry. His last job was as a retail clerk at the liquor store in 100 Mile House. Many of Luke's fondest memories came from his WW II service aboard the HMCS Orkney and his subsequent association with the "Big Four" (Bill, George, Vern and Luke), but his years in Lac la Hache, Hope and Haney provided a wealth of friends and memories too. Luke will be remembered as the one who knew the answers to problems, the one who would fix things, the one who would act, the one who would try. He set a great example for his children. Although slowed by fading health, Luke still looked forward to a weekly fleecing at the hands of the River Road card sharks. Jon was born in New Westminster in 1982. He joined his sisters Melonie, Leslie and Amanda. Jon resided in Port Coquitlam with his family until 1990 when they moved to 100 Mile House. Jon attended school here with much enthusiasm and success. Jon's generous, fun-loving nature made him friends wherever he went. Jon was an extremely proud uncle to four nephews, Austin, Dylan, Brayden and Dawson. They were the apples of his eye. Jon was a keen player of games. He was always up for a game of crib and was a killer at Scrabble. In 2002 Jon ventured out on his own to Kamloops, joining a house of 5 other disabled adults. Jon spent the last year exploring Kamloops and making many new friends. Jon lived his life to the fullest, with much optimism and joy and will be missed by all the lives he has touched. Jon was predeceased by; sister Amanda, Gramma Helene Hood and crib-playing partner, uncle Doug McDonald. A Memorial Service was held on Sat., Aug. 23, 2003 in the 108 Community Hall with Elmer Richard officiating. Interment in the 100 Mile Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Muscular Dystrophy in Jon's memory.
