WESTCOTT - Ronald (Ron). Passed away suddenly on April 29, 1998, aged 87. Survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Ellen, daughters Valerie and Gillian of West Vancouver, son Ronald (Margaret) in England. Grandchildren in Canada: Lawrence, Catherine, Ellenor and Elizabeth; in England: Tony and Andrew; in New Zealand, Jackie. Also in England: great-grandchildren Dan, Josh; only surviving sister Phylis and many nieces and nephews. Born in Cheshire, England in 1910 Ron grew up loving the sand dunes and rivers of his native Wallasey. He was one of 11 children, and with his many brothers and sisters he learned to love all that nature had to offer. Like all young lads of his time, he adored the game of football (soccer!) and played the game so well that he and his brother Denis were accepted into professional teams. Ron started his professional soccer career with Liverpool. He married his "Liverpool Lass" Ellen, and pretty soon was traded to Arsenal, a London team, where he played in a Cup Final game in Wembley stadium before a crowd of 100, 000 fans.
After his soccer days were over, he turned his considerable sporting talent to golf. He held (holds?) the record score for many of the courses he played in England, and coming in with a score of over 68 would be considered a BAD GAME!! He played for his county, Kent, and won numerous medals. He was most chagrined when in his later years his handicap was changed from 1 to 2! Upon his retirement from his profession as an antique silver dealer in London, he and Ellen came to live in West Vancouver in 1976.
Ellen and Ron became active members of the congregation of the lovely church St. Francis in the Wood, in Caulfeild. After a while Ron accepted the position of Verger of the church, and loved helping with the many weddings and memorials solomnized there. He especially liked ringing the bell after a wedding, knowing that the whole community was hearing and enjoying that wonderful sound. He was a member of the grounds committee, and helped with the tending and care of the gardens surrounding the lovely old church.
Another of Ron's great loves was gardening. He would spend hours making his balcony a riot of colour and joy for all to see. He joined the West Vancouver Kiwanis Club, and spent many hours helping others less fortunate. In recent years he lost some of his sight, and was designated as being legally blind, but all who knew him were amazed at his ability to continue to do his tasks in the Kiwanis greenhouse. He especially loved helping with their annual plant sale, and was busy making hanging baskets just days before he passed away.
He lived a long, interesting and full life. He touched the lives of many people along the way, and he is being sadly missed by us all. We give thanks for having him with us for so long. We would like to thank all who have sent flowers and cards of condolence, your kind thoughts are very much appreciated at this time. So good night now, Dad, and God bless.
