TRAFF - John Frederick Traff (Fred). Born June 16, 1916. Peacefully passed away in the presence of family on January 23, 2000. Distinguished for his spirited approach to all he accomplished. Fred was a noble man as a son, husband, father and grandfather. He spent his last years in extended care on the North Shore. He is survived by his wife, Valerie (nee Smith) of West Vancouver, two daughters: Susan St. James of Vancouver, Penelope Nickels of North Vancouver, son-in-law Tony Nickels, and five grandchildren: Richard, Sarah, Janine, Oliver and Conrad. Fred was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, of parents who immigrated from Georgia, Russia. Brother Pete and sister Mary are both deceased. A writer and photographer from early years, he began his newspaper career with the Powell River News in 1944. From 1967 to 1983 he published the 100 Mile Free Press community weekly newspaper, developing it into a national award winner. He was a conscientious, careful newspaperman known for his dedication to integrity. Fred was a pioneer with a spontaneous spirit. This led him to the peak of the Great Pyramid at sunset, many swimming adventures on his travels, riding his horse across Cariboo Hills, and turning out a prize winning newspaper. In this spirit, members of his close family gathered with Fred some months before his death to share an intentional celebration to honour his full and robust life. There will be no service other than a close family gathering.

BELL - Janet (nee Allan). Died January 13, 2000 at her home in West Vancouver. Survived by her sons Peter Boyd (Donna), Jason Bell (Rosemary), granddaughter Anna Gabriel Burke, sisters Shirley Giske (Dick), Nancy Kegel (Reinhold), brother Peter Allan, plus several nieces, nephews and cousins. For twenty years Janet was involved with the North Shore Co-operative Project for the Low Income and Handicapped. Donations could be made to COPRO, #3 - 636 Clyde Avenue, West Vancouver, B.C. V7V 1E1. Memorial service at West Vancouver United, 2062 Esquimalt St, West Vancouver, on Saturday, January 29, 2000 at 2:00 p.m.

THOMAS - William Stanley. Born April 17, 1907 in Cornwall, England. Passed away unexpectedly but quietly on January 24, 2000. Predeceased by his siblings Florence, Samuel and Frederick, and very dear wife of 67 years, Irene. Stan is lovingly remembered by his children, Brian, Marilynn King, Sharon (Ken) Johnson, Elaine (Tom) Holgate, John and wife Lindae; grandchildren Debbie (Rob) Collum, Julie (Tony) Elwood, Lyle (Cheryl) Johnson, Mark (Rosina) Johnson, Margaret (Norbert) Kratchmer, Craig (Anne) Johnson, Kelley (Rick) Nelson, Frances (Angel) Santos, Tracey McIntosh, Elizabeth Thomas, Karen (Yorke) Graham, Glenn Johnson, Michelle Sexton, Aaron, Shannon and Keith Thomas; great-grandchildren Sean, Brett and Paul Nelson, Jeffrey and Steven Johnson, Erin and Paul Johnson, Brittany and Matthew Johnson, Cole and Benjamin Graham. Sister-in-law Verna (Wally) Diggens, brothers-in-law Glenn (Frankie) Taylor and Lloyd Taylor, along with numerous other family members also mourn Stan's passing. Aside from Stan's celebration of family he had a passion for rowing, fishing, boating and writing. As a young man he rowed with the Vancouver Rowing Club, produced their newsletter, "The Roar", and remained a Member of that Club until his passing. He also produced an anthology, "Cable, Vision of the Pioneers", reflecting on cable's early years. Among his many accomplishments, Stan was the founding President of the Sunset Community Centre, Past President of the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Past President and Paul Harris Fellow of the Ladner Rotary Club, Director of the Delta Foundation and the Delta Hospice Society. He was a member of Tsawwassen Lodge AF &AM and the Fraser Chapter #30 of O.E.S. Stan was a thirty-nine year veteran of the telephone industry and a cable television pioneer whom, with the assistance of Irene, established his first cable network on Vancouver's North Shore in 1954. Delta Cable Communications Ltd and Coast Cable Communications Ltd. (Sunshine Coast) were established by Stan in 1966 and 1970 respectively. Stan was a Member of the Canadian Cable Television Association's Honours List and was appointed as one of three "Senators" of that organization. Stan's hand and heart touched and inspired the lives of his many acquaintances, friends and family members from around the world. His extended family and countless others will miss him dearly. His gentlemanly ways were always a shining example for others. A Funeral Service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church, 4755 Arthur Drive in Ladner, B.C. on Friday, January 28, 2000 at 12:30 p.m. Interment to follow at the Boundary Bay Cemetery on 56th Street in Tsawwassen. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Delta Foundation or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

POWELL - Margaret "Peggy". Born December 20, 1905, in Yonkers, New York. Passed away peacefully January 24, 2000. Survived by her son Robert Hewitt and his wife Nyssa Huang. Peggy was a member of the Baha'i community. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2000, at the "new" Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver. JENSEN - Howard Graham of North Vancouver, B.C. Passed away on January 20, 2000 at age 61. He will be sadly missed by his mother Georgina Jensen, sister Beverly Georgina Roffel, sons Howard Danny Jensen and Arnold Joseph Jensen, daughter Denise Marie Jensen, and many other loving relatives and dear friends. Prayers were offered on Monday, January 24, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Indian Catholic Church, 426 W. Esplanade St, North Vancouver followed by a Funeral Mass on Tuesday, January 25, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Indian Catholic Church. Father Vince La Plante, OMI, officiating. DUANE - Christenia M. "Chris". Died peacefully at home on January 20, 2000 at age 93. No service by her request. First Memorial 980-3451

BARRY - Lawrence Edward. Passed away on January 23, 2000. He was born May 17, 1916 in Vancouver. He is survived by his loving wife Beatrice, three children, Joanne (of Vancouver), Michael (of Mill Bay) and Patricia (of Victoria) and three grandchildren, Peter, Matthew and Caitlin. Larry served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. He then went on to operate C.H. Hosken &Co. Ltd (Importers). He made frequent business trips to the Orient in the course of which he made several lifelong friends. A longtime resident of West Vancouver, he spent the last few years at Cedarview Lodge in North Vancouver. A special thank you to the wonderful caring staff at Cedarview Lodge. Funeral Service to be held January 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, 595 Keith Rd, West Vancouver, B.C. Burial will follow at Ocean View Cemetery. HARRIS, Annie Robina (nee Matthews). Passed away peacefully January 22, 2000 in her 97th year. She was surrounded by the love of her family and friends. Predeceased by loving husband Bert and son Paul, brother Jack, sisters Margaret and Jean. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by sons Don (Joan), Ralph (Molly) daughter Sylvia (Ron) and Betty. Annie will also be lovingly remembered by her nine grandchildren, Laurie (Jack), Mark (Lori), Ken, Karen (Scott), Stuart (Judy), Brad (Leasa), Cheryl, Jeff, Jill (Glen) and ten great-grandchildren - Sean, William, Kathryn, Cameron, Harris, Greg, Scooter, Alex, Tyler and Jeremy. Special thanks to Dr. David Gray and Rev. Dr. Don Faris for "always being there" and also to the caring staff and friends at Evergreen House. A celebration of Annie's life will be held Friday, January 28, 3:00 p.m. at North Lonsdale United Church, Lonsdale &Osborne Rd., North Vancouver. WENTLAND - Verna C. Age 91. Passed away peacefully on January 19, 2000 at North Shore Private Hospital, Lynn Valley Lodge. Predeceased by her husband Leslie in 1980; sons, Dale in 1998 and Barry in 1999. Survived by her daughter Donna Paul of Nelson; daughters-in-law Joyce of Penticton and Lynne of North Vancouver, nine grandchildren and spouses, and 21 great-grandchildren. No service by request. BECK - Jorun. We will all miss this feisty, tell it like it is character. She passed away peacefully, which was very unlike her, on Saturday, January 22, 2000. Jo will be missed but not forgotten by anyone who knew her. Left to remember is her son Gavin (Shelley) and granddaughters Maddy, Katie, Leah and Nicky. ANDRICH - Bernice. Died in Invermere on January 16, 2000. Born July 5, 1910 and was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, her husband Mike and grandson Bobby. She will be lovingly remembered for the love, joy and humour she brought to the lives of her daughters Linda and Donna, son-in-law Bob, grandsons Michael and Gary and those who knew her. A graveside service at Ocean View Cemetery, 4000 Imperial, Burnaby will be held on Monday, January 24, 2000 at 11:00 a.m.

PRESTON - Mary L. Formerly of West Vancouver, 83. Died January 13, 2000. Born December 8, 1916 in North Bay, Ontario she resided in Canada but spent her winters with family in Sarasota. Widowed in 1956, she worked and raised her family and retired from her job in 1977. She moved many times in her life and so will be missed by friends and family across Canada and the U.S. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Gail and Arnold Jeffrey of Sarasota, Florida, son and daughter-in-law Terry and Barb Preston of Nanaimo, B.C., eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Born into a family of 12 she is also survived by six of her brothers and sisters, Tom, Margaret, Bob, Eva, Patsy and Jack. A funeral mass was held Tuesday, January 18, 2000 at Incarnation Church in Sarasota. Burial will be in North Bay, Ontario.

JOHNSON - Veronica. Passed away January 20, 2000. Survived by her loving husband Raymond; daughters Katie, Tania; sisters Imelda (Ken), Connie; grandchildren Nick, Chris, and Dave; niece Jackie and nephew Paul. Veronica will be sorely missed by many other relatives and friends. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2000 at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, 595 Keith Road, West Vancouver with funeral mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2000. McLEOD - Donald J. Born March 17, 1911. Passed away peacefully on January 14, 2000. Survived by his loving family: wife Anne and children Anne (Nancy), Donna and Bruce. A teacher for 22 years at Vancouver Community College (formerly VVI), he retired in 1976. Don then worked at the North Shore Credit Union until 1982. His lifelong passions were writing, teaching, and playing piano. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of B.C., or to the Heart &Stroke Foundation. Special thanks to Dr. A. Cheng, the staff at Lions Gate Hospital (2 East and 5 West) and the staff at Creekside Manor, Maple Ridge, for their compassion and support.

LANGSTON - Brian Arthur. Born September 28, 1949. Died January 21, 2000. Survived by his mother Virginia Langston of North Vancouver and brother Doug (Sharon) of Nanaimo. Predeceased by his father Ronald Arthur. Sadly missed by his many friends and family. His kindness and caring will remain with us always. A special thank you to the wonderful staff of St. Paul's Palliative Care Unit. No service by request. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice in Brian's name.

McGOWAN - Donald, Norbert, born Manchester England, June 4, 1932 passed away on January 19, 2000. Survived by his wife Delores, children Kevin &Karen (Walter), grandchildren Evan &Christopher and many other relatives. Memorial service to be held Monday, January 24, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at the Boal Chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 1505 Lillooet Rd, North Vancouver. NEWSOME - Dorothy. Passed away peacefully January 19, 2000 at Lions Gate Palliative Care Unit. Memorial Service will be held at Hollyburn Funeral Chapel, 1807 Marine Drive, West Vancouver, on Monday January 24, 2000 at 11:30 a.m.

REIBER, ARTHUR passed away December 13th, 1999, surrounded by his loved ones. The former resident of West Vancouver, served on the executive of Kiwanis for many years. He is sadly missed by his wife Eileen, son Kent, daughters Marilyn &Diane &5 grandchildren. Art left a legacy of integrity &life long public service. He will always be in our hearts.

TUTT - Leslie James. Died suddenly on January 9, 2000. Predeceased by his wife Lily Tutt. Les will be deeply missed by his daughter Margaret (Adel); son Philip; daughter-in-law Darlene; grandchildren Karen, Michael (Tina), Paula, David, Christopher and Jennifer (Terry); great-grand-children Matthew and Julia. Les was born in Bury, Lancashire on January 9, 1922. He served in W.W.II with the Lancashire Fusiliers. In 1949 Les and Lil came to Vancouver to raise their two children and start a home for their entire family. We will miss your sense of humour, love of life and love of family. A memorial service will be held for Les at St. Martin's Anglican Church at 195 East Windsor, North Vancouver on Friday, January 21, 2000 at 2:00 p.m.

RITCHIE - Madeline "Maggie". Born May 5, 1918 in North Vancouver. Passed away in Lions Gate Hospital on January 15, 2000. Predeceased by husband Ernest; sisters Annie and Teresa and brother Tony. Sadly missed by daughters Sharon (John) Scarsbrook and Shirley (Dan) Buchanan and son Ernie; grandchildren Patricia, Sean, Erin, Tammi and Christopher; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers Angie, Leonard, Albert, Gus; sister Josie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private family service was held Thursday, January 20, 2000. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Lions Gate Hospital. First Memorial 980-3451

RHODES - "Dusty" Dwight Whitford. Passed away January 18, 2000, after a long battle with cancer. He died peacefully, without pain, and was surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife Willa and sons David, Dan, Dwight and wife Elspeth, and daughters Cherie (Wyatt) and husband Bart and their children Sarah and Jamey; Laura (Pery) and husband Steve and their son Liam of Australia. Dusty was born on April 25, 1934 in Calgary, Alberta and joined the Air Force 1956. He was cross-trained, first as a navigator and then as pilot which had been his dream. He flew Props, Helicopters and Jets and was an instructor on Tudors. He had served in Europe, across Canada, and as a peacekeeper with the UN in Egypt. Dusty finished his military career with the 442 Search and Rescue squad based in Comox and began his career with Transport Canada in 1980. He retired at 60 and pursued his love of golf and passion for computers. Dusty would like to thank Dr. Coupland, Dr. Klimo, Dr. Preto, Dr. Padilla, Dr. Geddes and, for their loving care, the nurses and staff of the Lions Gate Palliative Care. A memorial service will be held for Dusty at Highlands United Church, Monday, January 24, 2000 at 1:30 p.m.

MACE - Michael John. Born Walthamstow, London, England, March 11, 1933. Passed away peacefully in Lions Gate Hospital January 14, 2000. Devoted husband of 42 years to Christine and loving father to Stephen and Vivian (Darren Benson). Also survived by brother, David (Olive), Woodford Green, Essex, England. Memorial service to be held on Thursday, January 20, 2:00 p.m. at St. Martin's Church, Windsor and St. Georges, North Vancouver. PATTERSON - Elizabeth Ann (Betty). Age 72. Passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on January 16, 2000. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband William Joseph (Bill) Patterson; son Joseph (Maria) Patterson; daughters Jane (Gerry), Ann, Bessie (Keith), Sara (Chris); grandchildren Ryan, Scott, Emilie, Cameron, Jennifer, Maddy, Chloe and Abbie. Betty's greatest pleasures were her family, grandchildren and friends. Prayers will be offered Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Anthony's Church, 2337 Inglewood, West Vancouver, where a funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, January 20, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the B.C. Cancer Society. A special thanks to the nursing staff at Lions Gate Hospital.
