Leslie Garbutt

GARBUTT Leslie. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Les, loving husband and father, on July 22, 2002. Taken from us much too soon, but taking comfort in a life lived to the fullest for 81 years. Survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Bernice; son, Dale and daughter in-law, Lorraine; brother, Jock, and many cherished nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Ronald, Gordon and Herbert and sister Molly. Les was born in the rural town of Bethune, Saskatchewan on July 4, 1921. He spent his early years on the family farm, and then went to work with his older brother, Ronnie, at Belbeck Angus Farm in Moose Jaw. He entered the Air Force in 1941 and served as an airplane mechanic at Bella Bella on the BC coast and in Saskatoon, where he pitched fastball for the Stations team. After he was discharged, he entered the jewelry business, which took him to many different places. In 1949, he married Bernice in Sintuluta, Saskatchewan, and, after a few moves, settled in Regina where, in 1958, Dale was born. The family made its way to Calgary, Vancouver, Coquitlam and, in 1969, Les realized a dream when he started Gardale Angus Farm in Milner, BC. During this time, he was the manager of Millers Jewelers in New Westminster, until he retired in 1983. He continued to run his farm and show his prize purebred Angus Cattle, until, in 1993, at the age of 72, he decided it was time to really retire and moved the family to Aldergrove. He stayed active in the Angus business, keeping cows and calves at other peoples farms, while indulging his need to stay busy by golfing and attending and holding garage sales. In July 2001, he celebrated his 80th birthday with a barbecue attended by many family and friends. He remained active doing the things he loved, right up until July this year when felled by a stroke and complications which led to his death on Monday. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, July 29, 2002, at Aldergrove United Chuch, 2623 272nd Street, Aldergrove, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Less memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Langley Memorial Hospital CCU would be appreciated. Sincere thanks to all the attending physicians and nursing staff at Langley Memorial Hospital.

Evelyn Porth

PORTH - Evelyn, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at the age of 85. She was surrounded by the loving care of the Menno Home staff as she left this earth to reside in her new home in heaven. Evelyn was born the youngest of eleven children to Fred and Molly Wonsch in Libau, Manitoba. While still in her teens, she married Dr. Frank Porth. She faithfully devoted herself to him in his years of practicing medicine, then working for the Department of Indian Affairs combatting the disease of Tuberculosis. In March 1977, Frank passed away at their cottage by Echo Lake, near Fort QuApplle, Saskatchewan. They had two sons, Conrad (presently resides with wife Mary in Calgary, Alberta) and Ron (resides with wife Leona in Abbotsford, BC). Evelyn was the backbone of the family. She always went beyond the call of Motherhood to generously provide love and support to her sons. Her many relatives and friends knew her for her energetic drive, sense of humor, and friendly, cheerful disposition. She was an active member of her church, where she assumed many roles of serving. As her 7 grandchildren arrived, Robin (Layne) Sebastion of Okatoks, Alberta, Cheri of Vancouver, BC, Ryan of Abbotsford, Chris of Vancouver, Jordan and Jillian of Abbotsford, and Margaux of Calgary, Alberta, she greeted them with much love, and cared for and nourished each one throughout the rest of her life. She was also blessed with 3 great-grandchildren, Brianne, Logan and Keifer Sebastion of Okatoks. She was greatly loved by her niece Rubie Minkie of Richmond, cousin Lou Porth of Calgary, and many other nieces and nephews. Evelyn lived a life of contentment and acceptance, giving without wanting. In 1990, she moved to Abbotsford, BC and for the last five years she has been a resident of the Menno Home. She enjoyed her time there immensely in the warm, Christian atmosphere the staff so lovingly provided. Following surgery in early May 2002, her health began a steady decline. Her family wishes to thank Dr. Gary Heffner, and also Louise Oppell and her staff of many saints at the Menno Home for the exceptionally tender and compassionate care they provided for her, especially during her last days. According to Evelyns wishes, her body will be cremated, with arrangements being handled by Personal Alternative Funeral Services, 3070 275A Street, Aldergrove. Interment will be at MacLure Road Cemetery, Abbotsford, BC. A private Memorial Service for immediate family and relatives will be held in the funeral home chapel at 4:00 P.M., Saturday, July 13, 2002, with Reverend Tony Nash officiating.
