Donald Earl Swanson
September 24, 1941 - March 3, 2009

Donald Earl Swanson passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 3, 2009, after a brief illness. He was 67 years of age.

Don was predeceased by his parents, Ely (“Al”) Swanson in 2004 and Doris Bastian Swanson in 2007.

He is survived by his sisters, Myriam (the late Calvin) Turbyfield, of Greenville, Illinois, and Sharon Swanson, of Kelowna, B.C., and his brothers Norman (Carol) Swanson, of Greenville, Illinois, and Bruce (Connie) Swanson of Kamloops, B.C.

He is also survived by seven nephews and one niece: Eric, Stephanie, Stuart, John, Michael, Scott, Ryan and Joel, their spouses and children.

Don worked for many years in the orchard industry, first as a shop hand in his father’s Swanson Sprayer business in Winfield, B.C., and then for several years in apple packing plants in Thornbury and Clarksburg, Ontario.

Don made a name for himself as a very friendly, polite and kind person. He was a “favourite” among his caregivers at The Shores, Ponderosa Lodge and Ridgeview Lodge. He enjoyed male quartet music, puzzles, and a good joke. We used to say, “You can’t tell Don a joke on Saturday night or he will start laughing in church the next morning.” The truth was that he got the joke as fast as anyone, but he might remember it in church the next day, and enjoy it again.

Don will be missed by many.

A funeral service will be held Friday, March 6, at 2:00 pm at the Free Methodist Centennial Chapel, 975 Windbreak Street, Kamloops, BC, Rev. Vern Frudd officiating.

Kamloops Funeral Home

Nov. 22, 1932 – Mar. 17, 2009

With great sadness we said farewell to Kay Monson (nee Whalley) on Tuesday, March 17 in Kamloops, BC.

Lovingly remembered by her two children, Wayne Monson (Angie Szilagyi) and Wendy Ross of Kamloops, two granddaughters, Nikki (Ken) McCormack, Kamloops, and Morgaine Charman Monson of Victoria, BC. Two sisters, Margaret Sutherland of Kamloops and Jean Leach of Florida, sisters-in-law Onna (Bill) Hain of Regina, SK and Edna Whalley of Bridge Lake, BC. Numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Also, her two dear friends, Greta Peters and Ken Moffat of Kamloops.

Predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Jack and Ernie Whalley, brother-in-law, Meade Sutherland, and her husband, Vern, in September of 2006.

Kay was born in Vernon, BC to John and Kathleen Whalley and grew up at Silver Creek, later living at Adams Lake and finally Sidney. She met Vern while going to school in Alberta and when he moved to Victoria they were reunited and married on September 16, 1952. They had two children, Wayne, born in 1955 and Wendy in 1957 before moving to Kamloops in 1963. Kay worked for BC Hydro and later as medical receptionist with Drs. Vinge, Unruh and Nixon. She was Office Manager at Sahali Dental Centre from 1977 until her retirement in 1999.

A dedicated member of the Paddlewheelers Lions Club and later receiving honorary lifetime status, Kay was the first Lioness Club District Governor. She loved birds and wildflowers and spent many hours out in nature enjoying both. Her family and friends were very special to her and she made every occasion a memorable event. She was a lady in the true sense of the word, loved by all close to her. Kay and Vern were able to happily celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002 with many family members and friends in attendance, a highlight in their lives. Sadly, dementia robbed her of quality of life for her last five years.

You will always be in the sweet song of a bird and in the beauty of flowers in a meadow

We will always love you.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Ponderosa Lodge and the Hamlets for their wonderful care of Kay over the past two years.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Kamloops Funeral Home, 285 Fortune Drive, 250-554-2577. In memory of Kay, donations to the Alzheimer Society of B.C., #300 - 828 West 8th Ave., Vancouver, B.C. V5Z 1E2, would be appreciated.

MARCH 4, 1924 – MARCH 11, 2009

On March 11 2009 Jarrett Johnson passed away peacefully at home at the age of 85.

He will be forever missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy. His children, Mel (Heather), Ann (Randy), & Susan (Andy). His grandchildren, Steven (Leah), Craig, Rebecca (Trevor), Danny, Matthew (Christine). His great-grandchildren, Jarrett, Madison, Lucas & Danica.

Jarrett was born and raised in Burton B.C. After spending two years in the Air Force at the end of WWII, he returned to Burton and married his sweetheart in 1947. They raised their family in Burton and in 1965 they moved to Kamloops, where he worked for BC Interior Sawmills which became Weyerhaeuser. He retired in 1987 and that’s when Mom & Dad took up horseshoes, golfing and camping, which took them to almost every golf course in B.C. They were members of the Chase Golf Club for over 20 years.

In the last few years Dad amazed everyone with his ability to create intricate three dimensional wooden ornaments in spite his battle with macular degeneration. He refused to be blind. Dad was a true example of how a strong will and determination will get you through life’s’ challenges.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Dads life on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 1PM at Kamloops Funeral Home, 285 Fortune Drive Kamloops BC.

Should friends desire, donations to the C.N.I.B. 1929 Bayview Ave. Toronto Ontario M4G-3E8 or BC Lung Assoc. P.O. Box 34009 Stn D. Vancouver BC V6J-9Z9, in memory of Jarrett Johnson would be appreciated.
