GREGORY LAWRENCE SLATER

Gregory Lawrence Slater, age 27, was born Nov. 26, 1977 and died suddenly Tuesday, March 15, 2005.

Left to mourn are his loving wife, Nancy, and beautiful daughter, Raegan Mackenzie Dawn; his mother, Shirley Slater (Krause); Papa Ken Carter; his brother, Toby (Sheri) and Davey; and his cherished sister and best friend, Jenny.

He is also mourned by his father, David Slater (Marlene); his stepbrothers, Christopher, Glen and Jason; his little sister, Jade; and his grandmother, Marion Slater. He leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins, and his nephews, Zachary and Gage, as well as his niece Stephanie.

Greg was predeceased by his grandfather, John Smith; and his auntie, Liz Chambers.

Greg will also be missed by his wife's family; mother- and father-in-law, Martha and Len; brother-in-law, Brian (Val); sister-in-law, Diane (Wes) and Bernice (Marvin); nephews, Christopher, Alex, Hagan, and Riley; as well as niece, Brittany.

Greg was a most caring and gentle person who cared about everything and everyone around him. For this he was rewarded with a long list of lifelong friends. Greg made friends easily. His laugh was infectious; when he laughed, everyone laughed with him. Greg loved being with his family and friends, even if there was nothing special going on; just being with them was enough. Greg made the most of his time here, and we will cherish him always.

Those wishing to memorialize his memory may give donations to the Steinbach Credit Union Trust Fund for Raegan.

GEORGE PATENAUDE
May 11, 1921 - March 26, 2005

After a brief illness at the St Pierre DeSalaberry and District Health Centre, it is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of George Patenaude of St Malo, Man., at the age of 83 years.

Dad leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved children, Harvey (Gwen), Edith (Ben), Guy

(Paulette), Louise (Gilbert), Gilles (Tammy), Monique, Pauline (Noël), Gerard, Richard (Edna), Micheline (Peter) and Michel (Delores). He also leaves 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; his brothers, Eugene (Jeanne) and Philbert (Jeanne); his brother-in-law, Roger Trudel; and sisters-in-law, Anita Carrière and Cécile Patenaude.

Dad was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite (née Dubois); his two grandsons, David and Christopher Dubois; his parents, Joseph and Rose-Alba; his sisters, Antoinette Nault and Léona Trudel; his stepsister, Josephine Lambert; his stepbrother, Edouard Carrière; and his brother, Alex Patenaude.

Dad was raised in Piney, Man. After a courtship, which saw him ride his bike from Piney to St Malo, where he would rendezvous with his beloved wife-to-be, Marguerite, they married and moved to St Malo, Man., where they resided and raised their 11 children.

During our childhood, Dad would take us on weekly family outings to Piney to show us where he grew up. His memories of Piney and the cherished outings were legendary. Thanks for the memories, Dad.

Dad resided at the Chalet Malouin Personal Care Home in St Malo for the last 20 years of his life. Before that, he enjoyed many years at his hobby farm on the outskirts of St Malo. He had a variety of animals that were treated with great respect and were enjoyed by both the children and the grandchildren. His love for animals was immense and this continued until the end of his time here on earth. Dad will also be fondly remembered for his "numerous birthdays" during the month of May, for his "free birthday drink" at the St Malo Hotel, and for his rendition of "Alleluhia, I'm a Bum," which he enjoyed singing with his family.

Dad was a carpenter and he enjoyed his many years of service at the St Malo Provincial Park, until his retirement at the age of 62. He will be missed.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at the DeSalaberry Hospital for their care and support during this difficult time.

Funeral mass was celebrated by Father Joseph Choiselat at the St Malo Roman Catholic Church in St Malo, Wednesday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m., with a prayer service beginning at 2 p.m.

Interment of George's cremated remains will take place in the St Malo Parish Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's memory to the Canadian Diabetes

Association (Manitoba Division), 102-310 Broadway Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 0S6.

"May his spirit be with God and with all family members who have passed on. We love you and you will be missed."

LeClaire Brothers in care of arrangements.

SEBASTIAN B. RIEGER
1910-2005

Peacefully, after a stroke and lengthy illness, at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach, Man., Sebastian Rieger passed away Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the age of 95 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Katherine (nee Janz) Rieger (married 69 years); daughters: Sylvia (Mel) Epp of Whitewater, Kansas, Deanna (Ed) Bohun of Winnipeg, Man., and Shirley (Arnold) Reimer of Winnipeg; grandchildren: Jim and Stacey Bohun, Michael Reimer and Katherine Katsura, Dana Reimer, David and Sally Epp, Terry and Amy Epp; one great-grandchild: Thomas Epp; sister Nora Rieger of Steinbach; and many nieces and nephews.

Sebastian was predeceased by his parents, Sebastian and Eva (Berger) Rieger; sisters, Anna Rieger and Minna Eidse; and by brothers, Simon and Henry Rieger, the latter his long-time business partner.

Sebastian Rieger was born March 26, 1910, in Steinbach, where he was raised, and received his elementary and secondary education. He began a career in teaching at age 19, first at several rural one-room schools and then at his first longer teaching position at Rosenhof School near Morris, Man. The Rosenhof years he remembered with great fondness: it was where he and Katherine started their young family and made many friends. He taught several more years at Steinbach Collegiate, then left teaching in 1949 to join his younger brother Henry in taking over their deceased father's business, Rieger Clothing Ltd.

A few years later, Sebastian was elected to the Steinbach School Board, and with his wife Katherine was active in promoting the petition and referendum that led to the creation of the Hanover School Division. In 1960 he was elected as the first chairman of the new school board. His major accomplishment in that capacity was to guide the school division in the construction of four new high schools, in Steinbach, Grunthal, Niverville and Landmark.

Sebastian was also active in his church, having served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon and member of the Church Board of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church, now the Cornerstone Bible Church.

The family expresses appreciation to Dr. Curtis Krahn and to the caring staff of Rest Haven Nursing Home for their many kindnesses, dedication and professionalism in care-giving during Sebastian's final illness.

Funeral services will be held at the Cornerstone Bible Church, 290 First Street, Steinbach, Thursday, April 14, 2005 at 2 p.m. Viewing at 1 p.m. Rev. Ron Adrian will preside. Pallbearers will be grandchildren: Michael Reimer, Katherine Katsura, Dana Reimer, David Epp, Terry Epp, and son-in-law Ed Bohun. Interment will follow at the Steinbach Memorial Cemetery. Following the interment, a reception will be held at the church.

LOTTIE PLETT THIESSEN
May 16, 1946 - April 9, 2005

Lottie was born in Steinbach, Man. to parents, Henry and Margaret Plett, and grew up in Blumenort, Man. During her childhood she contracted Rheumatic Fever and the consequences followed her all of her life. As a growing child, her school days were interrupted by illness and helping her mother at home with a large family.

In 1971 she married Daniel Thiessen, her Bible College sweetheart. They spent a number of years moving around Manitoba and Saskatchewan, working in various churches. Their family grew to four children, against doctor's recommendations.

Finally, in 1985 they moved to Blumenort. Mom enjoyed working in the library and on the acreage they had purchased. But in 1988, when they had purchased a larger country property, she suffered a debilitating stroke, which limited her dreams and slowed her down. She spent many determined years relearning to read and correcting the speech and articulation, which had been seriously affected. Her suffering and ill health frustrated her, and she kept going through sheer obstinacy.

Despite her limitations, full of determination, she loved her children, kept house, at various times worked at restaurants, went camping, climbed hills, and lived a full life.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening (when able), family get-togethers, and took up drawing and painting after her stroke. Having lost the fine motor skills in her right hand, her art was all left-handed.

She will be missed by her husband Danny; her daughters, Marge and Karen; sons, Merrill and Jeremy; and son-in-law Warren; her sisters and brothers, and their spouses: Betty and Garnet, Dennis and Irene, Anne and Denver, Agatha and Dennis, Marlene and Peter, Ruby and Jake, Robert and Rachel, Irma, Cornellie, Howard and Carolyn, Delores and Terry, Bernice and Glenn; and her father, Henry K. Plett. Danny's family, mother Margaret, Alfrieda and Harold, Loreena, and Paul and Lois, will also miss her presence, along with oodles of nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and many, many dear friends.

We wish to acknowledge the care and expertise of the doctors, nurses and staff at Bethesda Hospital, Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital cardiac ward. A special thanks to Dr. Pascoe, who performed Lottie's last two heart surgeries, for his professionalism and care, giving us hope for a healthier future. Despite the risks, Lottie entered her last surgery out of love for her family.

John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."

Job 23:10, "But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold."

The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 14, 2 p.m., at the Blumenort Evangelical Mennonite Church. Interment at the Blumenort EMC Cemetery.

Arrangements entrusted to Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach and Winnipeg, Man.
