ALVINA FAST
On Sept. 29, 2005, Alvina Fast (nee Plett), a courageous, loving, optimistic and dearly-loved woman, was freed from her battle with cancer.
We, her husband Edmar Fast, her children: Lois and Paul; Ruth and John; Bruce and Mary; Jerry and Phyllis; Julia and Tom; Marcia and Jonathan, together with her grandchildren: Josiah, Ruth, Jonathan, Caleb, Sarah, Michael, Tami, John, Sarah, Becki, Alex, Connor, Mackenzie and Rebecca, remember her with love and miss her dearly.
Born at home in Prairie Rose, Man. in 1928, Alvina learned to take care of a family at a young age. She was only 16 when she lost her mother, leaving her to bake, cook, clean and care for four younger siblings. They threw her first loaf of bread in the river, where it sank like a stone - or so the childhood legend goes. Nonetheless, she loved children all her life, and went to Steinbach Bible Institute because she wanted to be a Bible teacher. There a tall, hard-working man, who cheerfully whistled, "Oh When the Saints Go Marching In", caught her eye. She hadn't escaped Edmar's glances either.
On June 20, 1953 Edmar and Alvina were married and four years later they packed their two little girls and everything they owned into a 1941 Chevy and drove to Mexico to be missionaries. Mountains, sun, potholes and Spanish didn't keep Alvina from teaching Bible school in little villages, with a string of her own blonde-haired children in tow.
After 36 years of living in Mexico and on the U.S.-Mexican border, Edmar and Alvina and their family retired to their home in Blumenort, Man.
We will never forget her huge love for her family, the delight she took in teaching children, her unquenchable optimism and her profound faith in God.
We are very grateful to the oncology department at the St. Boniface Hospital, the caring palliative care workers of the Bethesda Hospital, and especially to Dr. Karen Toews, who was a comfort to us through the most difficult times. Our thanks also go to all our compassionate friends and family members who supported and prayed for us.
Alvina, we rejoice that you are with the One who loves you, whom you served all your life.
A service in memory of Alvina was held Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the Blumenort Evangelical Mennonite Church, with interment at the Blumenort EMC Cemetery.

BRIAN GEORGE KREUTZ
Sept. 1, 1981 - Oct. 2, 2005
Brian George Kreutz of Landmark, Man. passed away suddenly Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005. Brian is the son of Barry and April, and the brother of James. He will be greatly missed by family and many friends.
Viewing will be held Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, 7 to 9 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Man. Brian's funeral is being held Friday, Oct. 7, 2 p.m., at Christ Our Saviour Catholic Church, 365 Loewen Blvd., Steinbach, Man., with Father Leo Couture officiating.

SOPHIA DYKUN
Peacefully, Oct. 3, 2005, Sophia Dykun passed away at the Vita Personal Care Home at the age of 80 years.
She was predeceased by her parents, Olie (Elusta) Kutzak, Pearl (Paraska) Kutzak; sister Ann; brother Bill; son-in-law Alex Kowalenko; and grandson Kevin Podolsky.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Peter, her son Orest (Beatrice), daughter Jeannette (Harry), and son Larry, as well as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Maria Kutzak, of the Vita Personal Care Home, sister Lilly Zyha of Edmonton, Alta., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was born May 8, 1925 in Gardenton, Man. It was here she attended school and worked on the family farm until she met and married Dad, Peter Dykun, April 11, 1942, then moved to Winnipeg, Man. to begin married life. A few years later, because of their love for the country life, they returned to Gardenton, bought a homestead, and began farming.
Mom enjoyed being surrounded by her family and friends. She loved cooking, baking, sewing and gardening. Mom's yard with her beautiful flowers was a sight to behold.
Her children and grandchildren were an important part of her life. Most of the time, especially during the summer, Mom's house would be filled to capacity with her children, grandchildren and their friends. She always made sure everyone was fed, happy and accounted for.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Vita Personal Care Home for all their care, support and thoughtfulness.
Viewing will be held at Vita Funeral Homes "Vita Chapel" in Vita, Man., Oct. 10, 2005, from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Oct. 11, 2005, 10 a.m., at St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Gardenton, Man.

ELISABETH MAGDELINE POWELL
1934 — 2005
Elisabeth Powell passed away at her residence in Woodridge, Man., at the age of 71, Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005.
She is survived by her husband Tom; eight daughters: Liz (Charlie), Edie (Billy), Elaine B, Elaine (Don), Patience (Dwayne), (Donna) Sam (Alan), Mary Ann (Brett), Charlene (Rob), and their families. She is also survived by her brother, Andy (Marg) Nagy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by one daughter in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 7, 2 p.m., at the Woodridge Community Hall. Donations in her memory may be made to Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3A 1P6.

JAMES (DMYTRO) FENIUK
1913 — 2005
We announce the passing of James Feniuk, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at age 92, at the St. Joseph's Residence in Winnipeg, Man. He will be sadly missed by his two children, Melvin (Eva) and Valerie; grandchildren, William James Feniuk and Raydean Anderson; and one great-grandchild, Hailley Anderson. He is also survived by one sister, Annette Morrison of Toronto, Ont., and one sister-in-law, Olga Feniuk, as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers and one sister.
James served in the Royal Canadian Military from 1943 to 1945. After his discharge, he spent the next 40 years as an owner/operator of a Winnipeg Taxi Service. Following the passing of his wife of 61 years, Doris, James moved to Amber Meadow, where he met and made many friends. In his last months he resided at St. Joseph's Residence. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph for their exceptional and loving care. God bless you all.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, 10 a.m., at Steinbach Funeral Chapel, with Very Rev. Father Henry Lakusta officiating. Interment will follow in the Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery.

KATHERINE (KATIE) REMPEL
Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Katie (Enns) Rempel, was born Jan. 8, 1916, at Taschtschenak, in Russia, the eldest child of David D. and Margaretha (Frantz) Enns. When Mom was eight, the turmoil of the Russian revolution caused her parents to flee to Canada, where they ultimately settled on a farm near Grunthal, Man.
In 1932, at the age of 15, Mom went to Winnipeg, Man. to work as a domestic maid in order to help her parents pay for the "Reiseschuld" or sea passage to Canada. Mom spent eight years working in various homes, and we children all remember the stories of those years: hard work mingled with many happy times with her employers, as well as the many friends made through the Mennonite Maedchenheim or hostel. It was during those years that Mom was baptized and became a member of the Elim Mennonite Church in Grunthal.
On June 9, 1940, Katie married George Rempel, our father, also of Grunthal. All five children were born while Mom and Dad lived near Grunthal. In 1957, Mom and Dad decided to move to a farm north of Randolph, Man., and with that move, Steinbach and the Steinbach Mennonite Church became their community. Their gifts were recognized in the church and they served as deacons for many years. Whereas Dad's gifts were the more charismatic, Mom's gift was clearly that of hospitality.
Mom's first stroke in December of 1980 precipitated their retirement from full-time farming and a move to a house on Southwood Drive in Steinbach, Man. In 1995 they moved to Fernwood Place and they adjusted well to that move. When Dad experienced an incapacitating stroke 1 1/2 years later, Mom became his primary care giver, exhibiting incredible patience, gentleness and love. His death in November of 2000 left a huge void in Mom's life, nevertheless she carried on valiantly, enjoying her many friends and favorite pastime: jigsaw puzzles.
In early October of last year, Mom suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed. It became necessary that she relocate to a nursing home. She spent several months in the Vita Personal Care Home, receiving excellent care. However she longed to be closer to family and friends, and she was able to move to Rest Haven in Steinbach in May of this year. Soon after this move her health began to deteriorate. On Sept. 22 she was admitted to Bethesda Hospital with complications related to arterial sclerosis. Her strength dwindled rapidly, and when she stabilized somewhat she was transferred back to Rest Haven on Friday afternoon. Two days later, early Sunday morning, Oct. 16, she quietly slipped away to her eternal home.
The family is very grateful for the excellent, loving care given by staff at the Vita Personal Care Home, Rest Haven Nursing Home, and the Bethesda Hospital.
She is survived by children, Eleanore (and John) Woollard, Eric (and Mary), Irma (and Sieg) Peters, daughter-in-law Marg Rempel, and Judith (and David) Rempel Smucker; plus 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Gerhard (George) Rempel and one son Ronald.
Funeral will take place at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd., Saturday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m. Interment at Heritage Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the Birchwood Funeral Chapel Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., with devotional at 7:30 p.m.

HAROLD WARMS
May 14, 1920 to Oct. 15, 2005
With saddened hearts and also with great joy, the family of Harold Warms announces his passing to a much better place and a great reunion with family and friends. He was dearly loved and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen (nee Ginther); his one and only son, John (Susan); his four daughters, Dorothy, Betty (Keith), Shirley (Bruce), and Lynne (Glenn). He is survived by brothers, Albert, Frank, Walter and Abe; and also by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
Harold was born in the Winkler, Man. area, and raised on a farm, along with nine siblings, all of them boys. Harold married his childhood sweetheart, Helen, Nov. 30, 1941, and they made their home in the Roseisle, Man. area, where they took up farming. In 1959, Harold moved his family to a farm in the Stephenfield, Man. area and he farmed until 1975. Harold and Helen attended the Gospel Light Church in Carman, Man. for many years, and later they joined the Evangelical Mennonite Church in Roseisle, where they worshipped until they sold their farm in 1975 and moved to Blumenort, Man. Harold has always been active in church ministry.
In Blumenort, Harold started the second phase of his life, working in the Co-op store and later at Granny's. Anyone who knew Harold was aware of his great sense of humor and his strong faith in his Lord. In the years after moving to Blumenort, Harold and Helen took up fishing and enjoyed many good times with friends. Some things Harold enjoyed over the years were playing croquet, chess, crokinole, games, and doing jigsaw puzzles. For many years Harold enjoyed the fellowship of singing with the Singing Grandpas. He was also an avid Jeopardy fan and enjoyed following the progress of different contestants, especially Ken Jennings. One of his favorite pastimes was meeting friends for coffee. The last 15 months of Harold's life were spent in the Steinbach Bethesda Hospital and we extend great thanks to the doctors, nurses and support staff who made his stay there as comfortable as possible.

A celebration of Harold's life was held at the Blumenort Evangelical Mennonite Church, Tuesday, Oct. 18. Interment at the church cemetery.

LOUISE BARTLETTE
Louise Bartlette went home to be with Jesus and to join her loved ones on Oct. 19, 2005 at 7:30 p.m., six days before her 94th birthday. She was a resident of Bethesda Place Personal Care Home in Steinbach, Man. for the past two years. Her last day was spent peacefully and joyfully with her children.
Louise was born Oct. 25, 1911 in Arkadak, Russia, and was the fourth daughter of John and Anna Schroeder. She was 12 years old when her family came to Canada, along with hundreds of other Mennonites fleeing Russia after the Revolution. Her family finally settled in Morris, Man., where her father began what was then known as Schroeder's Greenhouse. Louise spent one year in school learning to read and write English.
Nov. 29, 1930 Louise married Roger Bartlette, known to everyone as the local barber. Together they raised a large family. Eighteen pregnancies resulted in 11 surviving children. Her life was spent primarily on raising her children and running an efficient household. During the 3 1/2 years that Roger was in the Army, she raised eight children alone.
Louise was a wonderful cook. After her youngest child went off to school, she became chief cook at the Morris General Hospital, where she worked for 15 years. She now had the time to develop her love for art, and received training in ceramics and oil painting. Anticipating Roger's retirement, she purchased a ceramic business known as Louise's Ceramics, where she, in turn, trained many would-be artists. At the age of 72 she travelled to Israel, a fulfillment of one of her life-long dreams.
She taught her children to work hard, saying often that there were no such words as "I can't". She loved music, and sang and whistled while she went about her work. She baked buns and cookies for the piano teacher in exchange for her children's music lessons. Because she loved God, several of her children were sent to Bible School. The greatest gift Louise gave to her children was her faith in Jesus Christ. Because her faith was vital to her, Louise was involved with Friendship Bible coffees, hosting them weekly in her home. The study of the Word and prayer were her life's blood.
Louise was baptized in 1948 in the North Kildonan M.B. Church, and until she moved to Bethesda Place in Steinbach, she attended the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Morris. Her greatest loss was the death of her husband Roger in 1973. She remained stalwart and took comfort in her faith.
In 1999, after suffering a light stroke, Louise moved into Parkside Villa, Morris, where she spent five years. Two years ago, when she required more care, she took up residence in the Bethesda Place Personal Care Home in Steinbach.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Anna Schroeder; and by sisters, Maria Stoesz, Katy Enns, and Elfrieda Schroeder. Mourning her loss are sisters, Erica Voth and Agathe Martens, both of Winnipeg, Man.; and brother John Schroeder of Morris.
Louise was predeceased by her beloved husband Roger in 1973; daughters, Annette in 1948 and Judy in 1999; and son John in 2005.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Marie Lewonchuk (Mike), Lenore Eidse (Ralph), all of Winnipeg, Sandra Birdsell (Jan Zarzycki) of Regina, Sask., Joan Berard (Lawrence) of Macdonald, Man., Betty Brandt (Henry) of Winnipeg; her sons, Norman (Betty) of Ottawa, Ont., Bob (Betty) of St. Albert, Alta., Peter (Kathy) of Brandon, Man.; also Lin Bartlette of Blumenort, Man. and Jim Scott of Courtenay, B.C.; 30 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Morris, Monday, Oct. 24, followed by interment in the Morris Cemetery. The funeral arrangements were under the care of Morris Funeral Home
