JOHN W. HARDER
July 29, 1912 - Sept. 17, 2004
Sept. 17, 2004 with his wife Theresie and two sons, Wilbert and Leonard, by his side, John W. Harder passed away at Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, Man. John was born in the Roland, Man. area on July 29, 1912. John married his first wife, Amalia Streck, in 1939. They farmed in the Roland area and moved, together with their two sons, to Landmark, Man. in 1951.
John operated Harder's Garage for many years. After closing the garage, John worked in Winnipeg at Auto Supply, and following Amalia's death in May 1970, he worked for Mondar Services until his retirement.
Dec. 28, 1979, John married Theresie Buss. At this time their two families became one.
John is survived by his wife of 24 1/2 years, Theresie; Wilbert (Julia) Harder of Landmark, Leonard (Shirley) Harder of La Ronge, Sask., Bernice (Lorenz) Borkowsky, Steinbach, Dianne (Victor) Loewen, Thompson, Man., Ken (Carol) Buss, Mississauga, Ont., Ruth (Bob) Brownridge, Portage La Prairie, Man.; two brothers, Frank Harder and Bob Harder; and two sisters, Gertrude Doerksen and Maria Cairn. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Gertrude; his first wife, Amalia; his brothers, Abe, Jules, Isaac, Richard (Dick), Peter, Jacob and David.
Pallbearers for the service are: Gregory Harder, James Harder, Charles Harder, David Harder, Kurt Brownridge, and Doug Brownridge.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at 2 p.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at the Memorial Cemetery.
The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Grobler and the nursing staff at Bethesda Hospital for their care and kindness. Thanks also to Pastor Maier for his comforting words.

DAVID DOERKSEN
Peacefully, Sept. 22, 2004, David passed away while at the Seven Oaks Hospital, at the age of 70 years.
David is survived by Marge, his wife of 47 years; son Darcy (Gina); daughters, Connie and Nancy; grandchildren, Angie, Candice, Crystal, Sheridian, Chantel, Dillon, and Tayler; great-grandchildren, Daizee and Ashton; brothers, Pete, Abe and Bill; sisters, Susie and Mary; and many other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers and one sister.
David was employed by the City of Winnipeg until he retired at the age of 62. He enjoyed his retirement and had a full life.
A graveside service will be held Friday, Sept. 24, 2 p.m., at the Transcona Cemetery.

ALDEN KROEKER
Sept. 20, 2004, at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Man., surrounded by family and friends, Clarence Alden Kroeker, age 43, beloved husband of Priscilla, peacefully flew to his heavenly home.
Alden enjoyed working hard all his life, from washing cars at Penner Dodge to driving cement truck at C.T. Loewens, and of course helping his brothers on the family farm. Alden's passion though, was his enjoyment of working with Autobody design, initially at Brookdale and for the past 18 years was employed at Penner International in the paint shop. He also enjoyed refurbishing old vehicles and tractors in his spare time.
Alden was proud to have been an active member of the Steinbach Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years. He enjoyed his time with the Fire Department immensely and was saddened that his illness took him from it.
Alden married the love of his life, Priscilla, on Aug. 16, 1986 and they built their home on the family homestead shortly thereafter. He loved spending time teasing, squeezing and joking with his nieces, nephews, cousins and his dogs… and they loved him right back! He was not a man of many words, but somehow he was always ready with a little jab or a comeback comment just at the right time; even his nurses received a flavor of his humor.
Some of his favorite moments were holidays to Hawaii, Palm Springs and the annual Kroeker Grand Fords weekend. (We will so miss you there!!)
Alden was diagnosed with having a brain tumor in 1997. He fought a courageous battle, having had two surgeries and extensive radiation and chemotherapy. The effects of the treatments were lingering and ultimately devastating, but through it all he never complained. He was content till the day he died and now he is safe in the arms of Jesus!! Amen.
He will be fondly remembered and forever loved by his wife Priscilla; parents, Clarence and Agnes Kroeker; brother and sisters, Bev and Frank Klassen, Wayne and Arlene Kroeker, Barb and Ross Klassen; sister-in-law Marilyn Kroeker; nieces and nephews, Jodi, Dan and Carter Zilinski, Brennan and Michelle Klassen, Chrystie and Richard Boggs, Cherise and Jarret Procter, Jenna Kroeker, and Stephanie and Chelsea Klassen; Priscilla's parents, John M. and Nettie Wiebe; brother and sister, Stephen and Raffi Wiebe with Caleb, Rachel and Mark McCowan. Alden was predeceased by his brother Gerald in 2001 and his sister Bonnie in 1980.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, 2 p.m., at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main Street, Steinbach, Man.
Should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Bethesda Hospital Palliative Care Program, available at the church.
We are so grateful to the many people who have faithfully covered the family with their prayers. Special thank-you's to Dr. Thiessen, Chaplain Larry Hirst, and the nurses on the main floor at Bethesda Hospital, who lovingly took care of Alden and who were not afraid to share their hugs and tears with us.

MAY CECILIA THOMPSON
It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of their mother, May Cecilia Thompson, Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at the Carman Memorial Hospital in Carman, Man., at the age of 80.
May was born in Badger, Man. on April 18, 1924, where she grew up. In 1943 she married Alfred Thompson of Piney, where they settled and raised five children. May and Alfred enjoyed 60 years of life together, Alfred running the business, and May as a homemaker and mom. In her younger years, May was an active community member and loved to curl. She also enjoyed the many evenings playing bingo with her friends. May continued her enjoyment of sports as she watched her grandchildren involved in hockey, baseball, curling and other activities. She loved her family.
Left to mourn her passing are her children, Sheila (Bill) Sawka, Judi (Richard) Schaeffer, Connie Halvorson, Kerry (Linda), and Jeffrey (Marilyn); 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Alfred in 2003, her parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, 11 a.m., at Piney Community Church in Piney, Man. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Box 12013 Stn. BRM B, Toronto, ON, M7Y 2L3.

MARIA (MARY) WARKENTIN
Sept. 18, 2004, at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Man., with her family by her side, Maria Warkentin, aged 86 years, peacefully went to her eternal home after a brief illness.
Mom was born in Rosengard, Man., March 2, 1918 to Jacob and Elizabeth Dueck. In 1937 she was baptized upon the confession of her faith at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church in Randolph, Man. Two years later, on June 13, she married our father, Cornelius Warkentin. To this union were born six children.
Mom's greatest joy in life was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she especially loved the baby stages.
Another one of her joys was cooking for her family, and we all remember her favorite expression, "Chinya eit mia." She worked at numerous restaurants, where she specialized in baking pies…she made the best pie crust!!!
She always enjoyed fellowshipping with people, which was shown by her interests in being involved with the Mitchell Senior Center, Seniors Bowling League, and most recently the adult day program, where she had numerous friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Neil and Tina Warkentin, Jake and Vienna Warkentin, Betty and John Reimer, Harry and Lorna Warkentin, Norma and Jack Epp, all of Steinbach; 18 grandchildren and spouses, 28 great-grandchildren; one sister; and two sisters-in-law.
She was predeceased by her husband Cornelius, one son in infancy, one son-in-law, and one grandson.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Sept. 22 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, with Pastors Rob Martens and Dave Reimer officiating. Interment at Rosengard Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Randy Warkentin, Patty LeBlanc, Gab Sorochuk, Ryan Warkentin, Maria Warkentin and Stacey Neufeld. Honorary pallbearers were Selena Warkentin and Jonathan Reimer.
We, as a family, are very grateful to have had her as our mom, with many pleasant and enriching memories of her. We are also very grateful for the comforting words she left us that she was ready to meet her Maker.
We would like to extend our thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at Bethesda Hospital, especially Dr. Kaethler, as well as to the many homecare workers who looked after our precious Mom, and to each and every one of you for every deed and act of kindness shown to us during our bereavement.
We do not sorrow as those who have no hope, but can rest assured to meet her again some day when time shall be no more. "Psalm 23"

1931 - 2004
Peacefully Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at the Victoria Hospital, Winnipeg, Man., Jacob passed away.
Jacob is survived by three sisters; one brother; one sister-in-law; one brother in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gerhard and Justina Wiebe; brother George in 1998; and two brothers in infancy.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, 3 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg.

HELEN DENISE WIEBE
Sept. 16, 2004, at Bethesda Hospital, Helen Wiebe of Steinbach, Man. was ushered into the presence of the Lord at the age of 62 years. Helen was born Oct. 5, 1941 in Morris, Man. In her early years she was employed at Bethesda Hospital in the kitchen.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Sept. 21 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel. Interment in Heritage Cemetery. In Helen's memory, donations may be made to a children's charity of one's choice.

Memoriam service for Clifford Ward, formerly of Woodmore, Man., will be held Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2 p.m., in the Greenridge United Church.
KATHERINE PENNER
Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, Katherine Penner of Steinbach, Man. passed away peacefully at the age of 94 to join her beloved husband, Klaas P. Penner; children, Eldred John, Myrtle (and son-in-law Gordon Penner), Wilmer Penner; and parents, Klaus and Anna Reimer, and all her sisters and brothers.
Katherine (Mom) will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her children, Vern (Martha), Melvin (Marie), Bertha (Jim Gunson), Marina (John Froese), Marge (Neil Koop), and daughter-in-law Anne; grandchildren, Sharon (George Stapleton), Marvin (Melanie), Brad, Jim (Angie), Greg, Eldred (Adele), Jonathon (Natalya), Catherine, Calvin (Cathy), Michael (Stephanie), Marlin, Marcel (Adria), Jillian, Kirk (Tara), Tammy (Earle), Chad; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
We will miss her laughter most of all. Mom had a wonderful, quirky sense of humour and loved to joke with and tease the people around her. Mom's greatest passion was working with fabric, whether it was designing dresses for her daughters from the pictures they showed her, or reworking old garments. She lovingly created quilts for all her children and grandchildren. We always said that mom was born too soon. She surely would have been an architect with her keen interest in designing and drafting plans for her homes, dream-homes and her attention to detail.
In her latter years she enjoyed countless hours chatting with her friends at Parkview Apartments and participating in jigsaw puzzling. She enjoyed the visits from her home care workers and housekeeper. She always put a smile on their faces with her humorous quips. Most of all, Mom's life was guided by her strong faith in Jesus Christ and the belief that we would all be reunited someday. She always took comfort in reading her Bible and holding up her loved ones in prayer.
Viewing will be held Sunday, Oct. 3 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel between 7 and 8 p.m., with a short devotional to follow. A celebration of Mom's life will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4 at the Steinbach Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main Street. Interment will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Continental Mission Inc., 159 Cree Road, Thompson, MB, R8N 0C2.

MARY NENKA
Mary Nenka, born June 22, 1917, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 27 at the Holy Family Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, Man., at the age of 87 years
Mary is survived by sons, Joe (Mary), Paul (Elizabeth), Alex (Beverley), Richard, Peter (Laurel); daughters, Elsie Charney, Evelyn Nenka; sister Francis Fedoruk; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Peter in 1968; son Ivan in 1954; granddaughter Denise Nanka in1986; grandson Jerry Nenka in 1964; brothers, John and Tony Strylyski; step-sister Mary Muzyka.
She lived in the Sundown area most of her life, farming with her husband. She later moved to Winnipeg to be closer to her family. Mary was a hard worker who liked the simple things in life. She was a homemaker most of her life and loved to garden. Mary also worked at Systems Monitor for a time.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Sept. 30, 11 a.m., at Holy Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Church in Sundown, Man., with interment at the parish cemetery. Prayers were held Wednesday, Sept. 29, 7 p.m., at Loewen Funeral Chapel.
The family wishes to thank the Holy Family Personal Care Home staff for their loving care during her stay there.

MARY TIMCHUK
Peacefully, Sept. 28, 2004, Mary Timchuk passed away at the age of 89 years, at the Vita Personal Care Home in Vita, Man.
Mary was born in Stuartburn, Man., Sept. 9, 1915.
She is survived by two sons, Ted and Tony, and by one daughter, Margaret.
Mary married her husband Bill in 1934, at which time they started farming in Woodmore, Man., until Bill's passing in 1994. Mary spent the last four years of her life in the Vita Personal Care Home in Vita, where she was very well looked after.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Tolstoi, Man. Interment will follow the service in the Parish Cemetery.
