ANNIE MARTENS FROESE
Annie Martens Froese, our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 18, just before 12 noon, in the Menno Home in Grunthal, Man. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Herman D. Froese, April 20, 2001; by one son-in-law, Garnet Eliason in 1984; three grandsons, Joel Bruce Eliason in 1984, Dale Herman Froese in 1995, and David Froese in 1986.
Annie was born in Grunthal, March 2, 1921 to John S. and Katherina Martens. She had six brothers and five sisters. Mom is survived by three sisters, Nettie (Peter) Funk, Mary Doerksen (Frank), Lena Schellenberg (Ben); and two brothers, George (Lena) Martens and Ben (Mary) Martens; sister-in-law Kay Derksen, brother and sister-in-law Dave and Annie Froese, and brother-in-law John Olfert.
Annie and the late Herman D. Froese were married Nov. 21, 1943. Together they raised 14 children. Mom loved the Lord God and taught her children to follow Jesus Christ. For most of their married life Mom and Dad served and worshiped in the Grunthal EMB Church.
Annie's family looks forward to reuniting in heaven. She leaves to mourn with hope, her children: Dave (Frieda), John (Marina), Ernest (Gwen), Anne (Ed), Herman (Inge), Irma, Vern (Hilda), Len (Alice), Ellie, Chris (Larry), Shirley (Peter), James (Marlene), Wes (Val), Ted (Mel); 65 grandchildren including spouses; and 19 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 23 at the Grunthal Mennonite Brethren Church, with interment at the Grunthal Cemetery.
If friends and family so desire, donations (in lieu of flowers) can be made to Grunthal Menno Home Foundation.
We, as family, would like to express our sincere appreciation to all who attended in the care giving efforts for our mother over the many years.

EMANUEL FENDER
Feb. 8, 1917 — Jan. 19, 2006
Jan. 19, Emanuel Fender passed away peacefully at Bethesda Hospital at the age of 88.
Emanuel is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ida; children: Joyce Chornoboy of Sarto, Man., Alvin (Adele) Fender of Steinbach, Man., Joan (Art) Krentz of Chilliwack, B.C., Beverly Fender of Steinbach; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rosalia Krentz.
He was predeceased by parents, August and Pauline Fender; a son-in-law, Edward Chornoboy; three sisters and one brother.
The funeral service was held Jan. 23 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with interment at St. Paul Church Cemetery, Hwy. 12.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethesda Foundation or to the St. Paul Memorial Fund.

CECIL EDWARD GILCHRIST
Peacefully, Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, Ed passed away at the age of 89 years.
Cecil was predeceased by his daughter Kathleen Johnson in 1994. He will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife Lucy; their children: Wayne (Anne), Robert (Rochelle), Janice (Norm), son-in-law David Johnson; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; his sisters: Sarah Gilchrist, Barb Gilchrist, Ruby Kushmall, and their families.
He was raised on the family farm in Ridgeville, Man., served overseas with the RCDs, and was employed with the City of Winnipeg for over 30 years. He also enjoyed 24 years of retirement.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 27, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). Interment will take place at Ridgeville Cemetery, Ridgeville, Man.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Ed to the Deer Lodge Centre.

RAYMOND REMPEL
After 75 years of a life filled with family, church, business and sports, on Jan. 20, 2006, our dear dad quickly left this earth for a better place. He laughed with and loved his wife of 52 years, Evangeline, until his final days.
For the last four years of his life, Dad suffered from progressive supranuclear palsy, which regretfully limited his energies. He never complained of his illness, but took it as part of God's plan for his life.
Dad was born in Steinbach, Man., Sept. 20, 1930, to Peter S. and Elizabeth (Friesen) Rempel.
Dad loved to play sports; one of his greatest joys was escaping to frozen ponds for hockey, to baseball diamonds, or to the tranquil fairways of golf courses. He was a natural who thrived on competition, and always strove to be the first and best. By good fortune, he was born into a family with enough boys to form their own Rempel baseball team.
He played Junior 'B' hockey in his youth and was a hardball pitcher for local ball teams. As he grew older, he enjoyed snowmobiling through the forests of Manitoba and helped begin the first golf course in Steinbach. When he fully retired, he was called up to the local Seniors Slo-Pitch team, and was drafted as one of the star players for the St. James Seniors Slo-Pitch team that went to Arizona for the World Playoffs in the year 2000.
Later, he began the Romeo club — the Retired Old Men Eating Out club — with whom he organized countless outings in the region to restaurants, factories, buildings and businesses of interest to him and his cronies.
He worked as hard as he played sports. For many years he worked for his uncle Jonas Friesen at the Steinbach Lumber Yard, then in 1972 created and ran his own interior decorating retail business known as Rays Interiors until 1996. Both his wife Evangeline and daughter Melanie worked by his side at the business for many years.
With the same fervor he brought to playing sports, he accepted His Lord as Saviour. Dad never wavered in his faith; what he believed he pursued with a single-minded purpose. He was an Evangelical Mennonite Brethren (now Cornerstone Bible) Church trustee for many years, and was Sunday school secretary-treasurer. He even brought his sporting life to the church, beginning a weekly volleyball club for seniors at the church gym.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Evangeline; three daughters, one son and their families; daughter Melanie and Marvin (Blake and children Cole and Gabrielle, and Mickey-Ray); daughter Cari and Darrel (Cameron and Ryley); and daughter Madrece, all of Steinbach; and son Byron and Genevieve of Montreal. He also leaves to mourn, one sister, Mrytle Reimer; four brothers: Clarence (Marge), Ralph (Wilma), Jake (Lorraine), and George; as well as sisters-in-law, Helen Rempel, Joan Rempel; and brother-in-law Roland Barkman.
He was predeceased by sisters, Rose (George) Kliewer, Annie (Peter) Peters, and Evelyn Barkman; and brothers, Peter, Orlando (Elma), Arnold, and Marvin.
He will also be dearly missed by his sisters- and brothers-in-law: Harold (Betty) Unger, Lottie (Peter) Guenther, and Veleda Goulden, and was predeceased by his brother-in-law Richard Goulden.
Our dear dad leaves behind a large and loving group of nephews, nieces and extended family, friends and acquaintances, all of whom were touched by his steadfast faith and love of life.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 24 at the Cornerstone Bible Church, Steinbach, Man., with interment at Heritage Cemetery.

BRENDA SCHROEDER (Gerbrandt)
Remembered in Love
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda Schroeder. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, after a short, courageous battle with cancer, Brenda went home to be with her Lord and Saviour. Brenda was born Feb. 4, 1960 to Harry and Evelyn Gerbrandt.
She was always a country girl at heart. As an adult, her farm was her haven. It is where she found peace and sanctuary and was able to care for her precious animal family. Brenda was blessed with the gift of caring for and nurturing others. Many were the recipients of her sweet, sweet spirit. She was always available with a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. Brenda touched people with her soft, gentle and loving manner.
Brenda shared her life with her beloved soul mate, Murray Schroeder, whom she married in June of 1990. Family and friends meant everything to her and they always came first. When we gaze to heaven, we will look into your eyes and see your beautiful smile again, all weariness gone, strong and whole.
She will be deeply missed by those left here to treasure her memory: her husband of 15 1/2 years, Murray; stepchildren, Michael and Nicole and grandchild Realy; mother Evelyn Gerbrandt; sister Sharon (Gary) Harder; mother-in-law Nora Schroeder; sisters-in-law, Debbie (Kelly) McDonald, Brenda (Allan) Beaton, Aileen Schroeder; and her nieces and nephews, Michael, Jonathon, Meagan, Caitlin, Chelsea and Nicholas; as well as many cherished friends.
Brenda was predeceased by her father Harry Gerbrandt; father-in-law Art Schroeder; brother-in-law Ray Schroeder; sister-in-law Donna Lynn in infancy.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service remembering Brenda's life will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2 p.m., at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 465 Henry St, Steinbach.

BOHDAN (BOB) OSADCHUK
Oct. 12, 1939 — Jan. 23, 2006
After a courageous battle with cancer, Bohdan (Bob) Osadchuk passed away peacefully at his home in Steinbach, Man., surrounded by his loving wife and children as the sun rose through his bedroom window. Even in his latest moments, he accepted his struggle with pain and discomfort, not once revealing defeat, until God gently lifted him from our arms into His.
Originally from Trentham, Man., Bob was raised on a traditional Ukrainian homestead where luxuries were few. His generosity towards family was never announced, but always present. The more he had, the more he gave. His love for teaching came early as he started his career in 1962, at the age of 22 years. His real love, however, started in 1963 when he met Orysia (Iris) Lazaruk and wed her in August 1964. He had two sons, Peter and Nick, and moved the family to Rainy River, Ont., to start teaching there in the fall of 1968. As he was a life-long learner, he attended the University of Manitoba and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. He remained teaching in Rainy River until his retirement in 1994. He moved to Steinbach in the fall of 2004.
Bob enjoyed reading, sports, traveling, poker, jokes and an occasional cocktail. He was best known for his devotion to his community. He was a member of the St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a leader in the Kinsmen and Lions Clubs for over 30 years, fund-raising for many different causes. Because of his love of reminiscing with former classmates and friends in Manitoba, he and a few friends took the initiative to arrange a District School's Homecoming in August 2001, and again in July 2005, which resulted in markers being placed at each of the District School Sites in Trentham and its surrounding area.
He was predeceased by his parents, Petra Osadchuk and Olana (Hladchuk); brother Nick Osadchuk; sisters, Elizabeth Kraynyk, Mary Chernecki, Winnie Feniuk and Sophie Platsko; and brothers, Taras Osadchuk and Michael Osadchuk.
He is survived by his wife, Iris Osadchuk of Steinbach, Man., son Peter, daughter-in-law Donna and grandson Aidan Osadchuk of Vita, Man., son Nicklous Osadchuk of Fort McMurray, Alta., sisters, Anne Lischinski of Winnipeg, Man. and Terry Merrick of Vancouver, B.C., mother-in-law Mary Lazaruk of Vita, and extended Lazaruk family, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Prayers will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Man., Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at 7 p.m., followed by funeral services at the St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Sarto, Man., Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Miron Pozniak, Father Oris Naherniak and Cantor Martin Chobotar officiating. Interment at the Parish cemetery.
Pallbearers for the service will be Wally Lischinski, Peter Chernecki, Mark Lazaruk, Tim Lazaruk, Kim Lazaruk and Tyler Crayston, all nephews of Bob.
The family expresses sincere thanks to relatives and friends for their kindness and support, and gratitude to the Palliative caregivers. Upon the wishes of Bob and his family, donations may be made to the South Eastman Palliative Care Program, Box 88, St. Pierre, MB, R0A 1V0.

Jake P. Friesen of Calgary, Alta., formerly of the Seaton S.D., Man., passed away at home Jan. 14, 2006.
SUSIE SCHROEDER
June 30, 1949 — Jan. 24, 2006
Tuesday afternoon, after struggling with numerous health problems, Susie peacefully slipped away to be with her mother, whom she missed so badly, and to enter the presence of Jesus.
Susie is survived by a large family that loved her and will miss her tremendously. Left to mourn her passing are her father, Peter F. Schroeder; and nine brothers and sisters: Helen (Will) Friesen, Henry (Eva), Anna (Bernie) Kehler, Lisa Friesen, Tina (Jake) Siemens, Trudy (Ed) Reimer, Martin (Tina), Erna (Terry) Wiebe and Tony (Glenda) and their families. Susie was predeceased by her mother, Susanna Schroeder, Nov. 30, 1996.
Susie was born in Chaco, Paraguay. She moved to Manitoba as a 16-year-old in 1965 where she attended a few years of school. She was later employed at the Kindale Occupational Centre, where she worked for 30 years. During her years at Kindale, Susie performed a few different tasks, but most of her time was spent sewing baby quilts. She was very proud of her work, and rightly so, because she did a very good job. Susie has 32 nieces and nephews and every one of them received a beautiful Susie-made quilt as a baby gift.
Susie was baptized into the family of God when she was 23 years old and loved attending church when her health permitted it. There were a number of people in her church family that were very special to her and always kept in touch with her.
For the last 10 years Susie lived on her own in Ashwood Apartments, where she made some very good friends. When we, her family, were concerned that she wasn't able to care for herself well anymore and wanted to find her a new home, she firmly said no. Susie had learned to love her independence and knew she would miss her friends in her apartment too much. Even though we are very saddened by her passing — we are so happy she never had to move.
As a family we would like to thank the staff at Bethesda Hospital for the kind and gentle care Susie always received. Special thanks to Dr. Illchyna and the nurses who took care of Susie during her last stay there.
The funeral service for Susie will take place Friday, Jan. 27, 2 p.m., at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church in Steinbach, Man., with burial to follow at Heritage Cemetery. There will be viewing at the church prior to the service. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Association for Community Living, 395 Main St., Steinbach, MB, R5G 1Z4.

SIDONIA (SALLY) MARY BEDNAR (nee Lucan)
Sally Bednar, 80, died peacefully in Bethesda Hospital, Jan. 25, 2006, surrounded by her family.
