Peter R. Barkman

Peacefully, with family at his side, on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006 at 10:15 a.m., Peter R. Barkman breathed his last breath and went to be with Jesus. He died at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach at the age of 90 after a brief battle with cancer.

Peter is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Margaret, his three sons and five daughters, LeRoy (Marcella) of Steinbach, MB, Margaret Rose of Steinbach, Rebecca (Jim Wiebe) of Blumenort, MB, John (Janice) of Steinbach, Sharon (Garry Kornelsen) of Calgary, AB., Judy (Erwin Plett) of Steinbach, Delores (Murray Barkman) of Steinbach, and Dwayne (Candy) of Winnipeg, MB, 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Through second marriage he gained another five sons and three daughters, Harold (Karen) Dueck of London, ON, Alice (Jim Kabernick) of Chilliwack, BC, Abe (Vicki) Dueck of Buffalo, NY, Elfrieda Couch of Ingersol, ON, Len (Jan) Dueck of Abbotsford, BC, Ray (Robyn) Dueck of Surrey, BC, Anne (Robert deBruin) of Orangeville, ON, and Donnie (Theresa) Dueck of Alberta, 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Peter was predeceased by his first wife, Helen; their firstborn son Daniel in infancy; his mother Sara and father John G. Barkman; his sisters Marie (Mrs. Ben Doerksen); Nettie (Mrs. Jacob Doerksen); Sara (Mrs. Abe Kroeker); Helen (Mrs. Abe Kroeker); his brother Jake, and a number of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Dad was born in the Clearspring, MB region in his parents' home on Aug. 27, 1916. At age nine, his family moved to Kansas, where his father became the teacher and pastor. After 12 years, they moved back to Canada to farm. He was married to Helen Reimer on Jan. 12, 1941 until she died on Feb. 18, 1995. On Aug. 31, 1996 he married Helen's very close sister, Margaret Dueck and had 10 wonderful years of married life again. Eight of these years, Dad and Mom lived in Abbotsford, BC, but we, dad's family were so glad they could move to Fernwood Place in Steinbach for the last 11 months of his life.

Dad loved God's creation and made sure we paid attention to the beauty all around us as we drove. Dad loved driving and any excuse to go for a drive would get us out on another adventure, whether it was seeing an area that was flooded, chasing a hot air balloon or just seeing how the crops in the area were doing. Many of these rides would end up with an ice cream cone somewhere.

Dad enjoyed many different occupations in his lifetime: bus driver, custodian of the Blumenort church, administrator of Rest Haven, cheese maker, bridge builder and farmer.

We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Krahn, the hospital staff and many homecare workers for the care, concern and love they showed to both Dad and Mom during the last weeks of Dad's life here on earth.

The funeral was held Monday, Nov. 6 at the Blumenort Evangelical Mennonite Church with interment at the church cemetery.

Arrangements by: Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach and Winnipeg, MB, 1-888-454-1030 or 326-1030.

Elmer P. Reimer

Elmer P. Reimer began his earthly journey on Aug. 26, 1929 at the family farm near Landmark. He was born to David and Margaretha Reimer. As the oldest member of the family, which included many special needs children, he learned early to be responsible for others. He became a man who could make clear "black-and-white" decisions very quickly. He also developed a very strong work ethic, which served him well all his life.

When Dad was about 13 years old, he came down with typhoid fever. He spent a long time in the hospital, and this effectively put an end to his schooling. All his life he struggled to read. He was, however, determined to lead his family in devotions, so with Mom's help, he learned to read after their marriage.

Dad accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour as a young child and later was baptized and became a member of the Prairie Rose Evangelical Mennonite Conference church. His faith was important to him, and he lived it in his daily life.

Dad fell in love with our mother, Helena Penner when she was working as a maid at his home. They were married June 17, 1951. On the family farm they raised eight children. We so appreciate the happy and stable home they provided for us. This marriage lasted until Sept. 4, 2000 when Mom passed away.

Dad missed her so much. When he met Nettie Wiebe in the fall of 2003, he gained a new lease on life. They were married on Aug. 29, 2004. They really enjoyed the two years they had together.

Dad was admitted to St. Boniface Hospital on Oct. 31, 2006 for surgery. Although he was recovering well, he had a massive heart attack at 10:20 p.m., and peacefully went to be with the Lord.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Helena, two infant sons Kenneth and Dennis, one brother and three sisters. He is survived by his wife Nettie, six daughters: Margaret and Gilbert Penner and their children Stephanie, Christal, Michael and Heather; Clarise and Norm Plett and their children Aurelie (Chris Thiessen) and Holly (Scott Janvier); Elvira and Denver Kroeker and their children Ange (Dallas Hiebert) and great grandson Trace, Cynthia (Mark Penner), and Ryan; Anita Reimer; Rose and Bill Kehler and children Destiny, Cole and Spencer; Lu and Lorne Reimer and children Janina, Emily, Tyler and Karalee; two sons: Arnold and Cheryl and children Faith and LeRoy Siemens (and their daughter Brooklyn), AJ and Lisa; Dave and Sharlene and children Corbin, Donovan and Derek. He is also survived by three stepsons: Allen and Cheryl and children Harley and Shelby; Gerald and Dyanna and children Virgina and Ray (and children Shayla, Savannah and Ethan), Steven and Crystal (and children Parker and Carter), Donna and Paulo (and daughter Isabella); Bryan and Carlene and children Madison, Tana and Samuel; two stepdaughters: Dianne and Rob Friesen and children Josh and Martha Wall (and daughter Callie), Felicia (and son Hayden); Anita and Randy Penner and children Tiffany, Courtenay, Kendra and Caitlin.

Funeral service was held Saturday Nov. 4 at Prairie Rose EMC Church with interment at the church cemetery.

Arrangements by: Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach and Winnipeg, MB, 1-888-454-1030 or 346-1030.

They worked together in this business until he passed away in 1963 after which she ran the business on her own for many more years. She was a correspondent for the German Steinbach Post for many years and many will miss her columns.

After she retired, she moved into the house next door that was owned by Edna and Erwin Vogt and built by her husband Peter. She spent the rest of her days there on her own until her illness on Nov. 3 when she was taken to the Bethesda hospital where she passed away Nov. 6. During this time she said goodbye to her family and her many dear friends that came to visit her.

The family can't express in words our thankfulness for the love and kindness that was shown to us and to those that opened up their homes to us during her hospital stay. We thank the staff at the Bethesda hospital in the emergency room and on the ward for their compassionate care. We are also grateful to the community of New Bothwell for being her family, she loved all of you.

We let her go with sadness, but rejoice that she went from a good home to a glorious home with Jesus.
