DEACON
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ethel Mildred Deacon on Sunday, March 24, 2002 at the Boissevain Health Centre. Ethel is survived by her daughters Marie Buchanan (Hugh), Mildred Ann Armstrong; grandchildren, Ron Buchanan (Debbie), Cheryl Cathers (Wayne), Michael Armstrong (Kelly), and Kelly Armstrong; great-grandchildren Matthew and Nicholas Buchanan, David and Erin Cathers, and Caitlin Armstrong, brother Walter Zeiler, sister-in-law Mildred Hammond and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Maurice; parents Mary and Robert Zeiler; brothers Elza, Harry, Robert and Roy; sisters Alice, Mary, Bertha; daughter Etta May; and grandson Kevin Buchanan. Ethel was born on December 19, 1919 at Bottineau, North Dakota, and lived just across the border on a farm in Canada. She attended school at Desford. She married Maurice Deacon on October 25, 1938 and worked alongside him on the family farm southeast of Boissevain. Her first priority was her family and she enjoyed her garden. She was active in the community and taught Sunday School at Horton. After they retired to Boissevain in 1976 they enjoyed some traveling and many camping trips. They purchased their cabin in 1988 and always looked forward to the summers at Lake Bower. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in Boissevain with Father Larry Winslow officiating. Interment in Boissevain Cemetery. FISHER
Lawrence Dalgleish Fisher. Larry passed away suddenly on Friday, March 8, 2002 at the age of 68, at Grandview, Manitoba. He was born in Grandview, Manitoba on August 16, 1933. He received his education at the Halton School. He started with MTS in construction in 1957, and continued with MTS until his retirement in 1991. During his career with MTS he lived in Dauphin, Grandview, Swan River and Brandon. In 1959 he married Carole Schaefer from Kitchener, Ontario. Their daughter Cheryl and son Doug were born in Dauphin, the youngest, Tannis was born in Roblin. After retirement, Larry moved back to Grandview, Manitoba where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his brothers, sisters, and many friends. He was predeceased by his brother Roger in 1954, his parents, Art in 1979 and Winnifred in 1989, brother-in-law Les Donald in 1991, niece Colleen Donald in 1983, first wife Carole in 1996 and special friend Laura. Larry is lovingly remembered by his children, Cheryl (Gerry) Schoonbaert of Calgary, Alberta, Doug Fisher of Calgary, Alberta and Tannis Bolduc of Three Hills, Alberta. Grandchildren Ashley and Ryan Schoonbaert and Shaye and Emilee Bolduc, brothers James Fisher of Grandview, Thomas (Cecile) Fisher of Elkhorn. Sisters Sarah Donald of Grandview, Patricia (Robert) Schallhorn of Almira, Ontario, Sandra (Peter) Tarasenco of Winnipeg. Special friend Marie Roach, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. Larry was active with the Elks while he lived in Swan River and for the last year Larry received the support and companionship of the Grandview AA Group. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at 2:00 at the Grandview United Church. The service was officiated by Peggy Barrows. United Church Choir and organist Lindsay Gashyna provided the music. Candice Arthur (great-niece), was soloist. Interment followed at the Grandview District Cemetery. If friends so desire, they may make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Larry’s name. The Sneath Strilchuk Funeral Service, Dauphin, Manitoba were in care of the funeral arrangements.
GILLIS
The death of Douglas Clifford Gillis of Brandon occurred on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at the Assiniboine Centre. Douglas was born in Whitewood, Saskatchewan on August 16, 1926. Attending school there in his younger years, he was an active ball player and played goalie on his hockey team. He spent many memorable summers at his parent's cottage at Round Lake as well as working summers for his dad at the pharmacy. After completing school, Douglas began his career of 39 years with CPR. Beginning as an assistant agent, then agent and eventually dispatcher. During the time of his career, he worked in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Douglas was a hockey enthusiast. He started the Minor Hockey in Fleming, Saskatchewan and was a coach, player and president of the Minor Hockey Association and served on the rink board ensuring ice was available. As an avid sports fan and player, he was active in both Masters Curling and Masters Golf. He enjoyed spending time watching his grandchildren play sports and any other school related activities including band concerts. Douglas was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Saskatchewan and Manitoba for 50 years and presently a member of Fenwick Lodge #158, A.F. & A.M. Douglas was also a member of the CP Pensioners. Among his many interests, Douglas liked to travel. One of his favourite trips was attending the Kentucky Derby and Cruising the Mississippi. Douglas will be most recently remembered for his coffee trips to the Mall and giving the ladies from Ottawa Place a hard time. Douglas is survived by his wife Fran, of 53 years, son Larry (Betty) of Brandon and daughter Cathy Wilson (Roger), of Westbank, British Columbia, grandchildren, Devon and Tory Gillis and Michelle, Scott and Taylor Wilson. He also leaves one brother Jack (Judy) and family of Moosomin, Saskatchewan. Douglas was predeceased by his parents, Hamilton and Louise Gillis. The ceremony to celebrate Doug’s life was held at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. Interment followed at Brandon Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Keith Allen, Bob Paxton, Wes Ardron, Bill Hales, Barry Cowan and Harvey Smith. Friends so wishing, may make a donation in Douglas's memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, B-727-10th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 4G7. HARRIS
Luella Margaret Harris (nee Fleming). Luella Harris, age 86, peacefully passed away at home on April 3, 2002. The greatest joy in Luella’s life was her family. She will be greatly missed by her devoted husband of 59 years, Ernest, her daughters, Sharon (Malcolm) Nattrass, Beverley (Michael) Curtis, her nephew, Donald (Susan) Aird, her dear grandchildren: Bradley (Wendy) Nattrass, Leah (Brett) Campbell, Steven and Robert Curtis, James and Jennifer Aird and her darling great-granddaughter, Alexia. Left to remember her with love are her niece, Noreen Kropelin, nephew, Robert Tarbet and their families. Also remembering her affectionately are Steven’s girlfriend, Jill DeVries, Robert’s girlfriend, Kim Orlesky, and Jennifer's fiancee, John Tennent. Luella was predeceased by her parents, George and Mabel Fleming and her sisters, Edna (James) Aird, Frances (William) Tarbet and her infant sister, Margaret. Luella was born October 9, 1915 in Deloraine, Manitoba. She grew up on a farm near Deloraine where she met and fell in love with her husband Ernest. They married on November 12, 1942, and moved to Winnipeg to begin their life together. Luella enjoyed her career in Winnipeg at Eaton’s as a ladies fashion sales associate. She had such a warm personality and an eye for fashion that she had many ladies call ahead to request that she help them personally. Her true vocation in life, however, was being mother to her two daughters, Sharon and Beverley who were the luckiest girls on earth to have such a special Mom with whom to share life. Luella and Ernie enjoyed the last several years at Parkside Plaza, among friends. She loved playing cards in the evenings and joking with her friends. She will be missed there. One of her greatest pleasures of her life was attending family functions, especially her grandchildren’s graduations and weddings. She never missed an occasion to see her family and most recently was planning a trip to Milwaukee this week to see her grandson, Bradley and his family. One of Luella's friends said that she would always remember the warmth of Luella’s friendship, her gracious manner, and always her lovely smile. This describes so well who Luella was. She cared about others and always meant everyone well. She gave her love freely - especially to children. A very important and sustaining part of Luella’s life was her love for God and her church family. She was an active member of Gordon United for many years and for the last several years at Gordon King Memorial. She received great comfort from her daily Bible readings and her Unit 9 UCW friendships. Her grandchildren remember their grandma as always being interested in their lives and activities. She was happiest knowing that they were happy. She supported each one unconditionally. Each grandchild felt specially loved and enjoyed a unique relationship with their Grandma. She lavished love and affection on her young great-granddaughter Alexia and was looking forward to seeing her this week. Her daughters remember their Mom as a beautiful person - loving , smart, faithful, supportive, generous, and dignified. We so enjoyed her presence and feel grateful that she was our Mom. Her husband remembers his wife as loving, caring and supportive. Words just cannot express our loss. The family wishes to thank the neighbors from Parkside Plaza for their help during the crisis of Luella’s passing. Thank you also to Dr. P. Erhard and Dr. K. Kjernisted for their kind care of Luella over these many years. Thank you also to Helena, Pat and Sue from Home Care. We as a family were privileged to have shared in the gift of Luella’s life of 86 years. As we say farewell for now to our wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, and aunt, our hearts ache but our faith is strong.

LELOND
Douglas William (Doug) Lelond, husband of Maud (McConnell), of Miniota, Manitoba passed away at the Hamiota Health Centre on Wednesday, March 20, 2002. He was born February 16, 1913 to Jed and Louise Lelond on the family farm at Arrow River. He and Maud were married on October 8, 1939 celebrating their 62nd anniversary in 2001. Douglas is survived by his wife, Maud; three daughters, Margaret (Marvin) Elder, Oak Lake, Elsie (Ray) Dickenson, Arrow River, Faye Campbell, Norway House; two sons, Mac (Pat) and Edward (Beth) of Arrow River; seventeen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Wilfred and Edna Lelond, Miniota; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother and father, brother and sister-in-law Jack and Lee Durrant; sisters and brothers-in-law Kathleen and Alfred Gieb and Evelyn and Elymer Clark, and nephew Cliff Clark. Douglas spent his entire life in the Arrow River/Miniota area, other than a winter in the bush in Ontario and riding the rails to the west coast and harvesting in Saskatchewan. He was a very active man, farming and keeping a cattle herd until he was almost 80 years of age. Even this past summer when his health had failed he still wanted to see how the boys crops, horses, and cattle were doing. The boys were his sons, and his relatives’ sons. In many ways he readily accepted the changes which occurred in the 20th Century. On the other hand he was a very practical man - if it ain’t broke - don’t fix it, and if barbwire or bindertwine will do the trick - use it. Douglas believed in doing one’s share in all community activities. This was evident as he was a trustee on the Miniota Municipal School Board, a Pool Elevator board member; a director with the Twin Valley Co-op; a member of the Miniota Museum and served on the Board of Stewards for the Arrow River United Church. He was a long time member of the National Farmer’s Union; active in the C.C.F. Party and a member and worker of the N.D.P. His strong political beliefs concerned the social injustice one sees in the world, and man’s in humanity to man. He had a very strong work ethic but at age 65 he took up golfing - a sport he enjoyed for the next twenty years. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, shuffleboard and bocce. He curled for more than fifty years at Arrow River and later at Miniota - most often at lead position. He enjoyed old time music and having a dance until the last few years when he didn’t have the wind to two-step. Douglas and Maud traveled to both coasts of Canada. He drove to Texas and they toured Mexico. They enjoyed a trip to Alaska and Douglas golfed at midnight on the most northerly golf course on the continent. Throughout his life he had a passion for reading. The library collection contained books relating to history, politics, agriculture and biographies. Douglas firmly believed that in order for one to understand todays events, one had to know what had happened in the past. This brought about many active discussions in the local coffee shop and drop-in center. He was an intellectual thinker to the end, wanting visitors in the hospital to tell him the news. The family and extended family were a very important part of Douglas’s life. He was proud of their achievements and interested in what the future held for them. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. Douglas was laid to rest in the Arrow River Cemetery prior to the celebration of life service held in Miniota United Church on Monday, March 25, 2002. Participating in this celebration were Rev. Scott Swanson; Marg Taylor, organist; choir members, son, Edward, singing “Blossoms in May”, a song he wrote especially for his dad; Ernest Elder, grandson, read the eulogy. Tracy Lelond-Young, granddaughter read a poem, and Rhonda Dickenson, granddaughter, did a Bible reading. All in attendance were considered honorary friends. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of choice would be appreciated. Campbell Funeral Home, Hamiota, were in charge of arrangements.

John “Jack” Saunders of Brandon, beloved husband of Dorothy, passed away peacefully at the Dinsdale Personal Care Home on Thursday, April 4, 2002 at the age of 79 years. She was born May 19, 1915 to Harold and Catherine Wait on the family farm at Waldron, Saskatchewan. Iris and Hugh were married April 6, 1942, celebrating their 60th Anniversary in 2002. Iris is survived by her husband Hugh; children Les (Betty) of Yorkton, Saskatchewan; Leigh of Coleman, Alberta; Rick (Karen) of Sylvan Lake, Alberta; Rhonda (Murray) of Springside, Saskatchewan; Colin (Evie) of Quesnel, British Columbia; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchdildren; sister Win Elliott; brother and sister-in-law Ron and Rose Wait; sister and brother-in-law Kay and Charlie Laing; sister and brother-in-law Eva and Cecil Elliott; sisters-in-law Rita and Agnes Wait; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
