ETHEL MAY HARPER
Ethel Harper passed away on May 10, 1999 at Boissevain Health Centre. She was born the eldest of five children to Russ and Annie Noble on September 24, 1908, in the Woodlake District. She received her education at Woodlake and Fairburn Schools.
On March 29, 1939, she married Leslie Harper. They had two children Gladys and Eldon.
Ethel enjoyed knitting, quilting, reading, playing scrabble, card games, and visiting with family and friends.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Gladys (Gerald); her son Eldon (Donna); her grandchildren Kevin, Carolyn and Kenton, Michelle and Darren, Craig and Leanna, Trevor and Danita, Niki, Russ and Cara; brother Aylmer (Louise) and sister Blanche.
JEAN HARLTON
Mrs. Jean Harlton of Red Deer, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Red Deer General Hospital, on Sunday, May 23, 1999. Jean was born on January 26, 1920 in Boissevain. The family moved to the Red Deer area in 1961.
She is survived by her loving children, Vernon (Sharon) of High River, Darlene (Dale Hallett) of Carstairs, Lyle (Sylvia) of Edmonton, Wilma of Red Deer and George (Susan) of Bonnyville; ten grandchildren; two brothers Ross and Roy and two sisters, Grace and Joy. She was predeceased by her husband, Garner in 1982. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 27, 1999 in Red Deer.
JANE MCCULLOCH
Jane (Robertson) McCulloch was born in Boissevain on April 3, 1906. Jane was the only daughter of Charlie and Maggie Robertson. She had one brother Harry.
Jane attended normal school where she attained her teaching certificate. Her first year as a teacher was in Whitewater. From there she accepted a position as a Grade One teacher in Boissevain where she taught for the next 39 years, ending her teaching career at the Boissevain Jubilee School. During this time she lived with and cared for her parents in their aging years.
In the early sixties she met and married her soul mate and the love of her life, George McCulloch, and moved to Brandon to start her new life. Jane and George spent many happy years together on 22nd Street until George's passing.
When Jane's health began to fail, she moved to Westview Lodge in her hometown of Boissevain. She later moved to Evergreen Place where she passed away on February 6, 1999.
Jane was predeceased by her parents Charlie and Maggie Robertson, brother Harry Robertson and his wife Marge, niece Dominique Payea and stepson Keith McCulloch.
She is survived on the Robertson side by her 3 nieces, Marcia Payea (Marcel), Nancy Mullin (Al), Margie Woodcock (Norman), 2 great nieces, 3 great nephews, 1 great great niece. On the McCulloch side she is survived by stepdaughter Gail McCulloch, stepdaughter-in-law Pepper McCulloch and 4 grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Thursday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Paul's United Church in Boissevain. Donations may be made to Evergreen Place. Killarney Boissevain Funeral Homes in care of arrangements.
EDWARD V. SANDS
Edward V. Sands passed away February 6, 1999 at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon.
Ed was born July 25, 1901 at Fairfax, MB to Louis and Emma Sands. He married Helen Nesbitt of the Riverside (Minto) district on November 26, 1930. They resided on the home farm until 1967 when they retired to 1313 - 26th Street, Brandon and then to Lions Manor in October, 1989. Ed enjoyed the years at the Manor, entering the Assiniboine Centre on March 10, 1998.
He was a member of Central United Church, a lifetime mason and he had been a councillor in the R.M. of Whitewater for 22 years. He was active in community affairs in his younger years and his other interests included golf, fishing, lawn bowling, shuffling and cards. Ed and Helen spent many happy years in Mesa, Arizona and summers at Clear Lake.
His wife, Helen, predeceased Ed in March, 1992. Left to cherish his memory are: daughter Wenda and husband Earl Wood; grandson Kevin Wood and wife Heather, their three sons Tyler, Mark and Josh; granddaughter Tannis and husband Dave Kaminsky, their sons Matthew and Mitchell. Also surviving are his brother Clarence and wife Eleanor, sister Louise Green and sister-in-law Verna Nesbitt, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Tuesday, February 9, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Gordon Stevenson officiated. Interment was in the Brandon Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Gordon Wooley, Bill Bickerton, Del Pringle, Hugh Margetts, Clare Wright and Tom Latimer. Friends, who wish, may make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 203 - 42 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B2 or to a charity of choice. Arrangements were in care of Brockie Donovan.
MARJORIE WINGROVE (CAMP) CHRISTOFFERSEN
Marjorie Wingrove Camp was born on June 9, 1917 at Deloraine, Manitoba, fourth child of Margaret (Smith) Camp and Philip Camp of Deloraine. She was educated in Deloraine, Tilston, Alida and Boissevain.
In 1939, Marj married Axel Peter Christoffersen, formerly of Frederikksund, Zealand in Denmark. They lived in Boissevain for the first years of their married life. Their oldest daughter and son, Penny and Philip, were born there. They lived in Goodlands for several years. Their next two sons, Monty and Alfred, were born in Deloraine. From 1950 until the present time, the family lived in Austin and their last two children, Neil (Randy) and Karen, were born in Carberry.
In addition to her role as wife and mother, Marj was also a member of the Patriotic Club, a Sunday School teacher at the United Church, and a leader for the 4-H sewing club. She supported the UCW and the Museum at Austin by her contributions of baking and cooking for many events. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 30 years.
Marj was very hospitable to everyone who came to her home, where coffee and conversation were always the order of the day.
Predeceased by Axel (1991), her parents, her brothers Philip and Len, her sister, Grace, she is survived by her children, their spouses, 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, her sister Sylvia, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Service of Celebration of her life was held at Austin United Church on Thursday, March 19, 1998 at 2:00 p.m.
Donations may be made in her memory to the Palliative Care Unit of Portage District General Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.
HOWARD MATTHEW HAMMOND
Howard (Howie) Matthew Hammond suddenly passed away in his home on March 10, 1998, at the age of 65 years.
Howie was born in Killarney, Manitoba on March 7, 1933. He was the youngest son of Earl and Isobel (Milloy) Hammond.
Howie graduated from Killarney Collegiate in 1950. He joined his father and Bud in operating the family trucking business, Prairie Freighters, which he continued at until his retirement.
Howie and Beth (Crawford) were married June 19, 1954. Beth worked in the office from 1955 until the business was sold. The general freight franchise was sold to Gardewine in 1991. The grain and livestock franchise was sold to Wawanesa Belmont Transfer in 1993.
Howie continued to drive for Wawanesa on a part-time basis. He was also a spare school bus driver.
His true love was for hockey, playing the game as a young lad right through until his joints started to protest. He coached the Killarney Shamrocks. But his real coaching career began when his son Bill started to play. He coached or helped with this group of boys until they finished their "midget" years. Then he became an avid fan of the Killarney Shamrocks and Minor Hockey. He enjoyed many hours in the rink with all his friends, young or old. He was at a game two nights before he died and looking forward to the Wednesday night game and the rest of the play-off.
Other interests he enjoyed were boating and skiing, flying, travelling, woodworking and golfing - doing them all with the true spirit of sportsmanship and fairness by which he lived his life. His greatest delight was in his family as he and Beth watched their daughter Debbie (Lucas), and Bill (Angela) grow up and become the kind of adults he admired.
He was active in the United Church, not so much on committee work but doing the little things behind the scenes for people less fortunate. Ruth Denham could always count on him to help deliver the food hampers for her at Christmas. His granddaughter Tina was overheard telling someone "nobody goes hungry in this world because Grandpa takes food to them". Howie loved his community and did his best to see it prosper.
Howie was predeceased by his mother in 1957, his father in 1973 and his son, Stephen Matthew in 1979.
He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Beth, son Bill in Boissevain, daughter-in-law Angie, granddaughter Jennifer; daughter Debbie in Winkler, son-in-law Lucas, grandson Philip, granddaughter Christina, grandson Zachary; one brother Earl (Bud) Perkins and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, in-laws and friends.
Even though our faith tells us we should rejoice that our loved one is with God, it is still difficult for those left behind not to feel sad and lonely.
May the peace and comfort of friends see us all through this difficult time.
ARTHUR ROBERT REID
Arthur Robert Reid died peacefully at the age of 82 years, in the Souris District Hospital on Monday, May 18, 1998.
Art was born on the family farm near Elgin on November 21, 1915, the youngest of nine children born to Alexander (Sandy) and Eliza (Coulter) Reid. He went to school at Elgin and was a member of St. John's Anglican Church. He married Norma Clark in Elm Creek on December 30,. 1948. He remained on the homestead and was a very hard-working, dedicated farmer. He was also actively involved in many organizations including the Masons and helped with community events. Throughout his life, he enjoyed participating in many sports including baseball, fishing, curling (over 50 years) and later golf. Art and Norma took their first vacation to Hawaii in 1976 and that fall he sold the farm. They retired to a new home in Souris in November 1977. They travelled on nine very enjoyable bus tours throughout Canada and the United States making many new friends. He soon took up the game of golf and after a few years encouraged Norma to do the same, which gave him much pleasure. He was able to maintain the large garden and yard in park-like condition until last September when he and Norma moved into Heritage Place Condo in Souris. Art's greatest disappointment this spring was being unable to join the Senior Men's Golf Club.
Art was predeceased by his parents; four sisters Maggie (Jim) Berdux, Ellen (Les) Parker, Annie (Harry) Hammond, Maudie (John) Kemp; three brothers George (Annie), Jim (Pearl) and Alex (Marguerite) and brother-in-law Les Watson. He is survived by his loving wife and constant companion, Norma; daughter Brenda (Bruce) Sinclair and grandsons Gary (Jean) and Terry, and great grandchildren Cassidy and newly-born Ashton Sinclair, all of Red Deer, AB; son Blair (Anne) of Winnipeg; sister Tillie Watson of Souris; sisters- and brothers-in-law Max (Hettie) Clark of Atikokan, ON, Lewis (Jean) Clark of Winnipeg, Ila (Andy) Lang of Souris, Corky (Donna) Clark of Virden, Al (Alma) of Black Diamond, AB; many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral service was held on May 23rd at St. Paul's United Church, Souris with Rev. Ron McConnell officiating. Interment of ashes followed at the Souris and Glenwood Cemetery. In memory of Art, donations may be made to the Souris Health District, Box 311, Souris, MB or the Canadian Cancer Society, 42 McTavish Ave. E., Brandon, MB. Kowalchuk's Funeral Home was in care of arrangements.
Art will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and all who knew him.
