Edith Jeffries

Peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at the Lion’s Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie, Edith Jeffries, widow of the late Ernie Jeffries, and dear mother of Albert, Corrine and David, passed in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 100 years.
Edith was born October 3, 1914 in Toronto, ON where she grew up, received her education and worked at Eaton’s.
On March 8, 1937, at the age of 23, she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour and attended Mimico Gospel Hall.
On April 6, 1939 she married Ernie Jeffries.
Their three children were born when they resided in the Toronto area.
We, the family have many pleasant memories and really appreciate the stable family atmosphere that we were raised in and for the family values that were instilled in us.
Ernie worked for Campbell’s Soup and in 1959 he was transferred to Portage la Prairie to help open a new plant.
Edith and the children came first to get the children settled in school and lived in the Mayfair Hotel for 3 months before Ernie followed.
During this time we were warmly received by many Christian families who fellowshipped at the Gospel Hall and Mom and Dad were quick to show Christian kindness and service to others.
Edith and Ernie established the Riverbend Greenhouse and later Jeffries Nurseries.
They both enjoyed the challenge of these enterprises.
Mom always had a passion for plants, flowers and gardening whether it was poinsettias in the greenhouse or perennials in her garden.
Edith’s passions also included her husband and family, parcel packing for missionaries, crocheting and knitting, reading her Bible, prayer and helping others.
On June 2, 1981 Edith became a widow when her husband of 42 years was called home to be with his Lord and Saviour.
Edith is survived by son Albert (Louise), daughter Corinne Ronald, and son David (Judith).
She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Nancy (Andrew) Patten, Heather, David; Kevin (Brenda) Ronald, Kathy (Ian) Chase; Dawn (Colin) Bell, Ernie (Carli), and Roland (Sheri), along with sixteen great grandchildren.
Edith was also predeceased by her parents, two brothers and one sister, one granddaughter, Kimberly Jeffries in 1980 and son-in-law, Hugh Ronald in 1987.
The family would like to acknowledge the faithfulness and compassion of many long-time friends especially in her later years as well as the loving and professional care Edith received from the staff at the Lion’s Prairie Manor during the past five years.
Edith’s life is a testimony of God’s love and faithfulness.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at the Herman Prior Centre, 40 Royal Rd. N., Portage la Prairie with interment in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
If friends so desire, memorial donations to Via Magazine, P. O. Box 551, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba R1N 3B9 or the Lion’s Prairie Manor Foundation, 24 Ninth Street S. E., Portage la Prairie, MB. R1N 3V4 would be appreciated

“There is no death, only a change of worlds.”
Hard-working hands are now at rest. She placed other’s needs ahead of her own and often suffered in silence.
She was a superb cook and homemaker.

In Fort Church she met Isaak who was stationed there with the military.
They married in 1958 and were then transferred to Barrie, Ontario.
Their only son Gregory Shane was born in 1959. That same year they moved to Germany until 1963 when they transferred to Toronto, ON.
Dot worked as a computer operator until her retirement in 1994 when they moved to Portage la Prairie, MB.
Isaak died in 2008. In 2009 Dot moved to Winnipeg, MB.
And in 2014 she moved back to Portage la Prairie as her health continued to deteriorate.

She kept her house immaculate and actually enjoyed cleaning and preparing for large family feasts and get togethers.
“Nena” to her three grandchildren- they were her pride and joy and she had beautiful unique relationships with each of the boys.
Over the past 10 or so years, Mom began to develop a range of health concerns that physically affected her, and also took a toll on her spirit.
She never wanted to be a burden on anyone and often hid or minimized her physical and emotional pain from those who loved her the most.
She always was the rock of the family, holding us all together despite what she was enduring herself.
Terry-Lynne, Mom, Nena- you left us too soon, and we have no idea how to live without your beautiful smile, tender touch and hugs.
While we will forever have a gaping hole in our hearts from her absence, we know now that she is no longer suffering and she is with her parents in heaven.
