Mary Shulga

Peacefully, On Thursday, February16th, 2006, at her residence, Mary Shulga of Portage la Prairie, widow of the late Nick Shulga, passed away at the age of 94 years.
At Mary’s request no funeral service will be held.
A private family interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery at a later date.
Mary was born on August 10, 1911 in Dubno, to Michael and Anastasia Antoniuk.
The family moved to and landed in Halifax on May 5, 1929.
They settled in the Grass River District in Manitoba .
She helped on the family farm, and also worked for another farm family doing farm labour and domestic duties.
In 1933, she moved to Portage la Prairie.
Soon after, she met and married her husband Nick.
They resided on their farm in the West Curtis district.
Mary loved her flower garden.
Her other hobbies included gardening and quilt making.
Predeceased by her parents; husband Nick; brother Bill Antoniuk; and four sisters: Molly Antoniuk, Dorothy Makarchuk, Olga Antoniuk, and Anne Shulga.
She leaves to mourn her passing her son Tony of Portage; two grandchildren, Kelly (Kornelius) Pankratz of Portage, and Mark Shulga of Robson, B.C.; three great-grandchildren: Melissa, Nicholas, and Natashia, all of Robson, B.C.; brother Alex (Anne) Antoniuk of Plumas; sister Minnie East of Winnipeg; and many nieces and nephews.
Should friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, c/o Catherine Newham-Portage Office, 103 Wilkinson Crescent, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, R1N 1A7 .

Eugene Frederick "Buck" Peltier

On Wednesday, February 15th, 2006 at his residence, Eugene Frederick "Buck" Peltier of Portage la Prairie, and formerly of St. Charles, Winnipeg, beloved widower of the late Anne Peltier, passed away at the age of 83 years.
Funeral service will be held at the Omega Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 21st, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Father Michael Wollbaum officiating.
Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Buck was born on February 14th, 1923 son of the late Frederick and Lillian Peltier in Winnipeg.
He was raised and received his education in St. Charles.
During World War Two he enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces and served in the Royal Canadian Artillery.
After his discharge, he returned to Winnipeg and became employed with Brewery Productions in 1948.
In 1947 he married Anne Caliguerie.
He was later employed with Carlings Brewery and then with Associated Beer Distributors until his retirement in 1982.
Buck was a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
His life centered around his home, family and farm.
Buck enjoyed hunting.
Predeceased by his wife Anne in 1972; son Phillip in 1991; son-in-law Dan L’Heureux; and 4 Brothers: Ted in infancy, Basil, Raymond, and Joe.
Buck leaves to mourn his passing five sons: Sid (Ann) of Terrace BC., Gene (Brenda) of White Court, Alberta, Joe of Kamloops, BC., Eric of Hinton, Alberta, and Wilfred of Edmonton; 5 daughters: Stephanie (Ken) Goertzen of Calgary, Carol (Bob) Larkin of Portage, Shelly (Chester) Wota of Edmonton, Theresa Peltier of Cranbrook, BC., and Debbie Peltier of Winnipeg; brothers: John (Elsie) of Grosse Isle, Mb. and Arnold of Winnipeg; sisters: Audry Foster of Winnipeg, Leona Dowling of Kingston, NS., Gertie (Leo) Baron of St. Charles, MB., and Ruby Dauphanais of Winnipeg; daughter-in-law Jan of Toronto; 26 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Should friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 0K8.

Janet "Rose" Parrott (nee Hyde)

Janet Rose Parrott passed away peacefully on the morning of March 29th at the Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie.
A funeral service will be held in Trinity United Church, Portage la Prairie, MB. on Saturday, May 6th, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. followed by a lunch in the Auditorium.
Interment will follow the lunch, at Hillside Cemetery
‘Rose’ was the youngest daughter of Joseph and Francis Hyde (nee Troop), and the last of their eleven children to pass.
Pre-deceased by her husband of twenty-two years, Dr. Fred Parrott, she will be missed by her children: Leslie Parrott, Linda Hayes and Richard Parrott, the Hyde families, and her many friends.
From her early school years at Burnside, Manitoba, and Portage Collegiate Institute, she went on to receive a registered nursing degree from Victoria General Hospital in 1941 and a radiology diploma in 1949.
She served on the staff of Portage General Hospital and Portage Medical Clinic until she married in 1960.
Rose was a life long member of Trinity United Church and carried her faith in service into the community at large.
She loved to be active – hardly ever sat down.
Bridge, curling, golf, charities, Eastern Star, politics, parties, music.
Put Rose and a piano in the same room and you had a singsong.
For as long as she lived, Rose could brighten a room just by walking into it.
We will miss her laughter, and we will cherish her legacy … "Smile and the world smiles with you."
In lieu of flowers the family asks to have donations go to the Douglas Campbell Lodge C/O the Portage District General Hospital Foundation, (524-5th Street SE, Portage la Prairie, MB.R1N 3T8) in gratitude for their care and kindness.

Susan Caroline Parker

On Thursday, January 05, 2006 at the Portage District General Hospital, Susan Caroline Parker of MacGregor, formerly of Oakville, MB, widow of the late Robert Parker passed away at the age of 95 years.
Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Monday, January 9, 2006 at 1:30 P.M. with Pastor Ray Willms officiating.
Interment will follow in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery.
Mom was born on May 19, 1910 daughter of William and Elizabeth Taylor in the Raeburn district where she was raised and received her education.
She helped out on the family farm and helped to raise her younger siblings after her mothers passing.
She then moved to the Ingleside district as a housekeeper.
This is where she met Robert James Parker and after they were married they farmed and raised their family of two sons and one daughter.
After Robert passed away she moved to MacGregor.
In the early 1990’s she moved into a suite at the Lions Manor in MacGregor where she resided until her passing.
She was a member of the Anglican Church in MacGregor until it became too difficult to attend, but her faith remained strong.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, gardening and she had a keen interest in farming, bee keeping and enjoyed travelling with friends.
Her greatest joy however was her children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth; father, William; step-mother, Alice; her husband, Robert in 1978; granddaughter, Jobie and one sister, Gladys Tully.
She leaves to mourn her passing her two sons, Alex (Ellen) of Portage, John (Pat) of Olds, Alberta; one daughter, Joyce (Keith) Thompson of MacGregor, fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers, Donald (Irene) Taylor of Marquette, MB, Roy (Doreen) Taylor of Portage; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation on Sunday evening, January 8th from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M.
Should friends so desire memorial donations may be made in Susan’s name to the MacGregor Lions Club or to a charity of ones choice.

Harold J. Owens

Harold Owens died quietly on Wednesday, May 3rd at the Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie.
Harold was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Guinn) Owens, and his brother, Donald Owens.
He is survived by his son, Kent, and his wife, Myrna, of Medicine Hat; his daughter Susanne Moroz, her husband, Bill, and their children, Craig and Stephanie; his daughter Judith Owens, her husband, Gilbert Chartrand, and their children, Madeleine and Adriana, all of Winnipeg; his sisters-in-law, Dorothy McLachlan and Nell Owens, and brother-in-law, Murray Guinn, all of Portage, and by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Harold was born in Portage on June 28, 1916, to Maude (Campbell) Owens and Joseph Owens.
He attended school in the district of Flee Island and in Portage; later, he trained as a pilot, becoming a commissioned officer in the RCAF and serving as a flying instructor.
He and Ruth married on Feb. 27, 1943, in Ft. William.
Following his service during WWII, he declined offers to join commercial airlines and returned to Portage, where he and Ruth raised their children.
He farmed in Flee Island with his brother and joined Guinn & Simpson Marble and Granite, where he worked for many years, until well past retirement age, with his father-in-law and brother-in-law.
He retained a life-long interest in politics, in earlier years working tirelessly on numerous Liberal election campaigns, in one instance as the candidate’s campaign manager, and in later years following American politics with great interest.
He remained interested also in sports, as participant and spectator; he was an avid curler for many years and, later, an even more avid golfer, and would often watch one football or baseball game on TV while listening to another on the radio.
In later life, he was fascinated with nature; he enjoyed drives in the country and was very fond of watching and feeding the geese that gathered yearly in front of his home, and of sharing that pleasure with his grandchildren.
Harold was always quietly proud and actively supportive of his family, generous with encouragement and practical support.
He delighted in the accomplishments of his grandchildren and welcomed their weekend visits.
He was a man who enjoyed conversation, discussion, and debate, and who kept his sense of humour to the end. He will be missed.
Private interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery.
Friends are invited to attend the memorial service to be held Tuesday, May 9th, 1:30p.m., at Trinity United Church, Tupper Street, Portage la Prairie.
Omega Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
If friends so wish, they may make donations in Harold’s memory to the Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage or to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Allan Langille Munro

Peacefully, on Friday, March 10, 2006 at the Portage District Hospital, Allan Langille Munro, of Portage la Prairie, beloved husband of Margaret Munro passed away at the age of 82 years.
Funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 2:30 pm with the Reverend Norman Collier officiating.
Interment will follow in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery.
Allan was born on March 22, 1923 son of Catherine and R. Allan Munro at Burnside, Manitoba. He received his education at Poplar Bluff School.
Even before he finished his schooling, he started farming in that area, first with his father and brother and then on his own.
A profession he proudly maintained for 65 years.
In October of 1951 he married Margaret Cory and together they raised their family of 2 children.
Allan was member of the McKenzie and Burnside United Churches, and served on the Board as well as the West End Hall Committee.
He was a 4H leader for the Poplar Bluff 4H Club, a Manitoba Pool Elevator Delegate and a member of the Burnside Historical Society.
He loved to farm, enjoyed reading, travelling, carpentry, and gardening in his later years.
Special to him was the fact that he was the 4th generation Munro to farm and received the "Century Farm" designation in 1972.
He always enjoyed watching his grandchildren in curling, band, baseball and Christmas Concerts.
He especially enjoyed his coffee breaks and visiting friends at Tim Hortons.
Predeceased by his parents, one brother Murray, one sister Roberta, he leaves to mourn his passing his wife Margaret, one son Clarke (Noreen) and their children Jared, Trevor & Brady, one daughter Carol (Arnie) Kruck and their children Carrie (Justin), Jamie (Lindsay), and Christa. Also surviving is his sister Wilma McSorley of Calgary, sister-in-law Helen (Cam) Harris and several nieces and nephews.
Dad was very lucky to have his granddaughter, Christa, who he called his Angel, as a special caregiver over the past few months.
Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation on Wednesday evening, March 15, 2006 from 7 to 8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to give the gift of time. Drop in on a sick friend, visit an elderly relative, or take someone out for a coffee.
