MARY HIEBERT
With family by her side, Mary Hiebert (nee Dyck) passed peacefully into heaven on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 16, 2004.
She was predeceased by her parents, Aganetha and John P. Dyck; sisters, Tina Hildebrand and Lena Groening; and several in-laws.
She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 65+ years, Cornie (C.W.); children, Al and Lorna Hiebert of Steinbach, Man., Phyllis and Thom Morris of Deerfield, Illinois, U.S.A., Val and Gary Schellenberg of Winnipeg, Man., and Dennis and Judy Hiebert of Steinbach; nine grandchildren: Rhonda and Jim Friesen, Kevin and Melodie Schellenberg, Jonathan Hiebert, Dave and Leanne Schellenberg, Rob Morris, Paul Hiebert, Danielle and Jennifer Morris, and Kyle Hiebert; and three great-grandchildren: Matthew, Laura and Sarah Friesen. She is survived by brothers, Anton and Dora Dyck, David and Katherine Dyck, Cornie Dyck; and sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Herman Doerksen), Eva Dyck, and Agatha (and John) Gerbrandt.
Mary was born Nov. 24, 1918, the second of nine children. She grew up on her family's farm near Lowe Farm, Man., and was baptized on confession of faith at age 18 in the Rose Farm Rüdnerweider Church (EMMC). On Sept. 27, 1939, she married the boy next door, Cornie Hiebert. After farming for six years, they moved to Steinbach in the fall of 1945, where Cornie became established as a barber, watchmaker and jeweler. Here, their lives were happy and filled with many friends, especially in their church family at the Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church, Steinbach.
The family is grateful for the excellent care and support of the medical staff at Steinbach Bethesda Hospital. A special thank-you to Dr. Thiessen for your personal encouragement and compassion at this difficult time.
The funeral will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, 1 p.m., in the Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church, 375 Mackenzie Road, Steinbach. Viewing to take place Friday, Nov. 19, 7 p.m., in the Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, and at the church prior to the funeral. Interment at Heritage Cemetery.

DAVID H. PENNER
David H. Penner, age 85, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, with his family at his side, at the Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach, Man.
He is survived by and lovingly remembered by his wife Hilda (Voth) of 58 years; children: Pauline (Bill) Wiens, daughter-in-law Eleanor (Frank) Thiessen, J. Ernie (Gladys) Penner, Kathleen (Geoff) Williams, Mary (Harry) Friesen, Geric (Patsy) Penner; grandchildren: Karen (Corey) Wiebe, Cynthia and Laurel Wiens, Andrea (Kris) Kroeker, Darryl (Tricia) Penner, Teresa (Dwayne) Klassen, Nathan (Alisa) Penner, Amber Penner, Candace (Brendan) Bingham, Leah (Julian) Barker, Japheth (Gillian) Martens, Krysta (Daniel) Friesen, Priscilla (Albert) Giesbrecht, Sheri (Tom) Bueckert, Rebecca, Lindsey, Katherina and Clint David Penner; great-grandchildren: Shaylene, Brycen and Karlana Wiebe, Seth Kroeker, Shauna, Mason and Coltin Penner and Faith Bourassa, Taylor Marie and Liam James Martens, Cole, Gabrielle and Sutton Brooke Friesen; sister Margaret Penner and sister-in-law Neta Penner.
He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Agatha (Neufeld) Penner; adoptive parents, Jacob J. and Katherina (Klassen) Penner; one son Henry in 2001; three brothers, Henry, Hans and Peter; and four sisters, Agatha, Anna, Greta and Mika.
David was born Feb. 10, 1919 in Jesikowa, No. 3 Russia to Henry and Agatha (Neufeld) Penner. He was the youngest of eight children. David never experienced the joy of growing up together with his siblings, as his parents and 16-year-old brother Henry died of typhoid fever in December 1919. Because of these events, the remaining siblings were not old enough to care for each other and keep the family together. As a 12-month-old baby, just two months after his parents passed away, David was adopted into the loving home of his father's cousin Jacob J. and Katherina (Klassen) Penner and their five-year-old daughter Margaret.
The family moved from Russia to Morse, Sask. in 1924 when David was four years old. From there they moved to Stonewall, Man., where David spent most of his youth to young adult life. The next move to Landmark, Man., where the family bought a farm, gave David the opportunity to indulge in his passion for horses - training, riding, driving and in general working with the horses. David was a wonderful brother to Margaret, a constant support to her, especially through her illnesses and struggles with her health. He was also a steady and much needed provider for his parents and Margaret.
David got to know Hilda through his sister Margaret. During their early courtship, David and Hilda were both baptized in 1945 in the First Mennonite Church in Winnipeg, Man. They became engaged Jan. 27, 1946, and married July 27, 1946. For the first two years of their married life, David and Hilda settled on a farm in Landmark. During this time they were blessed with their firstborn, daughter Pauline. In 1948 they bought a store in Landmark, which they owned for one year, and during which time their first son Henry was born. When Henry was nine months old, David had the opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a dairy farmer and the family relocated to Friedensfeld, Man., and was further blessed with four more children, Ernie, Kathleen, Mary and Geric. Although they experienced 40 successful years on the farm, David also had a 24-year battle with cancer, heart and stroke disease. Of the many memories made during this era, some of the highlights included traveling, which took them to places of historical significance, as well as to Europe, Germany and South America.
Due to his health problems, David and Hilda retired from the farm and moved to Steinbach in 1993. As his health deteriorated further, David moved into Rest Haven Nursing Home in 2003, which unfortunately prevented him from realizing his last remaining wish, to visit his homeland in Russia.
On behalf of the family, we would like to thank Dr. Dyck and Dr. Minnaar, the home care workers and the staff of Rest Haven Nursing Home for their constant care and devotion to David.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Steinbach Mennonite Church. Interment at Heritage Cemetery.

THERESE GUICHON
Peacefully, Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, Thérèse passed away at her residence in Ste Anne, Man. at the age of 82 years.
She is survived by her sister, Sr. Emma Guichon SJSH of St. Hyacinthe PQ, sister-in-law Alice Guichon of St. Boniface, Man., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters, and special friend Jules Callens.
Thérèse was born in Îles-des-Chênes, Man., July 11,1922. She taught school for many years and later was the postmaster of Îles-des-Chênes until her retirement in 1978.
Throughout her lengthy illness, Thérèse's faith in God and her zest for life carried her through her many hardships.
Special thanks to Ken Nolin, her dedicated Home Care provider for many years, Louise Ruppell, friend and neighbor, and all others who helped her during her illness. A special thanks to the doctors and staff at Ste. Anne Hospital.
Funeral Mass was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004 in the Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde R.C. Church (Îles-des-Chênes, Man.), with Father Edmond Baril presiding. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Viewing took place from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service.

BERNHARD K. HIEBERT
Bernhard Kehler Hiebert was born Nov. 5, 1924 near Niverville, Man. to David A. and Margaret Hiebert. April 15, 1951 he married Lena Sawatzky of Otterburne, Man. They had two daughters: Agatha Anne and Hilda Lena. Their oldest daughter Agatha Anne lived only one day.
Ben and Lena lived most of their married lives in and around the Steinbach, Man. area. Ben worked as a night watchman at the sugar beet factory and then later he worked for Friendly Family Farms. Lena died Oct. 21, 1986.
In 1991 Ben met and married his second wife, Nettie Wiens Doerksen, and shortly thereafter they moved to Grunthal, Man. They were married only eight years when Nettie died in August 2000. Ben remained in his Grunthal apartment until declining health forced him to a lengthy stay in hospital. He stayed in hospital until his transfer in April of 2003 to the Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach. After years of poor and declining health, Ben passed away Nov. 17, 2004 at his home at Rest Haven at age 80.
Ben was predeceased by his parents; his first wife Lena and their daughter Agatha Anne; and his second wife Nettie and Nettie's grandson Jonathon Howel. He is survived by his only daughter Hilda; two sisters, three brothers and their families; by Nettie's two daughters, one son and their families; as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Nov. 21 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, with interment at Niverville Cemetery.

MARY ZAHARA
1923-2004
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary Zahara, Nov. 19 at the Vita and District Health Centre.
Mary was born Aug. 26, 1923 at Tolstoi, Man. to Prokop and Nellie Todoruk. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Sally Gawron, and brother Michael Todoruk.
Mom was devoted to her family and homestead. Despite her failing health, she protected and cared for her husband and two youngest sons until the day of her passing. Visitors, expected or not, could always count on a luncheon of cheese, sausage, rye bread and her famous pickles. Mom took pride in her cooking; her holubchi, perogies, borscht, canned beets and dills were always family favorites! In addition to cooking, Mom loved working in her garden, playing "hola", and taking day trips with her husband and friends to the Shooting Star and Club Regent.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 61 years, Mike; her only daughter, Eva (Ed); sons, Gord (Suzanne), Don (Brenda), Eddy and Allan; grandchildren, Cindy, Charlene (Dan), Ryan, Jason, Bev (Chris), Aaron, Adrian, Aviree; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hayley. Mom was looking forward to the arrival of her third great-grandchild in December.
Prayers were held Tuesday, Nov. 23, 7 p.m., at Steinbach Funeral Home (formerly Loewen), 5 Chrysler Gate. Funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 24, 11 a.m., at St. Michael's Greek Orthodox Church in Gardenton, Man., with Father Miron Pozniak officiating. Interment followed in the Ukrainian Historical Cemetery in Gardenton. There was a gathering of family and friends after each service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

SOPHIE RENTZ (nee Elyk)
1912 - 2004
Peacefully, Sophie Rentz passed away Nov. 23, 2004 at Bethesda Hospital, at the age of 92 years.
Sophie is survived by two daughters: Dorothy Kuzina of Stony Mountain, Man., Linda (Vincent) Alguire of Woodridge, Man.; six grandchildren: Henry Kuzina, Ronnie Brasseur, Kirsten Green, Donna Brasseur (Leroy Connel), Jason (Valency Meheden) Alguire, Amanda Alguire; four great-grandchildren: Melissa Green, Rondi Brasseur, Damen Connel-Brasseur, Hailey Connel-Brasseur.
Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Henry Rentz, Sept. 11, 1988; her daughter, Helen Brasseur, 1990; and one son-in-law, Mike Kuzina.
Mom was interested in her garden and anxiously awaited spring and the growing season. She took great pride in her hard work and energy.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 27, 1:30 p.m., at Steinbach Funeral Home (formerly Loewen Funeral Chapel), with interment at Kerry Cemetery. Viewing will be held half hour prior to the service.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Thiessen, and the wonderful nurses on second floor at Bethesda Hospital for their loving kindness. Thanks to Gail and Adina, homecare nurses, for all their visits and encouragement, Irene and George Grenier, who were her wonderful friends.

NETTIE NIKKEL
Nettie Nikkel of Steinbach, Man. passed away at the Ste. Adolphe Personal Care Home in the early hours of Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at the age of 75 years.
She was born to Frank and Anna Nikkel, Nov. 2, 1929. In her early years she went to the Rosengard School; later she worked in Winnipeg, Man., until she retired and moved to Steinbach.
Nettie is predeceased by her parents; one sister, Agatha Penner; two brothers, Frank in infancy and John. She leaves to mourn her passing, two sisters, Annie Siemens of Steinbach and Mary Wiebe of Langley, B.C., two brothers, Jac (Katie) Nikkel of Steinbach and Peter (Edith) Nikkel of Abbotsford, B.C., and their families.
The funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 26, 2 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, with viewing prior to the service. Interment at Heritage Cemetery.

WASILINA BAHRYCHUK
July 22, 1904 - Nov. 17, 2004
Peacefully at the Vita Personal Care Home, Wasilina Bahrychuk passed away at the age of 100 years and four months. She is survived by her son Bill (Nancy); daughter Elsie Nimak; daughter-in-law Anne Gylywaychuk; son-in-law Matt Drebnicki; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Wasyl Gylywaychuk (1939); second husband Dmytro Bahrychuk (1984); daughter Marie (1969); son Morris (1992); parents Joseph and Mary Kohut; brothers, John (1991) and Bill (2004); sisters, Katherine (2003) and Anne (2004).
She was a lifetime member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Stuartburn, Man., at which she held the position of elder for many years. She was a true Canadian pioneer, being born in the Stuartburn area, and living there her entire life. She grew up at a time when everything was saved and the land had to produce to survive till the next years.
Friends and acquaintances were welcome to view, Sunday, Nov. 21 at the Vita Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. A funeral service was held at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, Stuartburn, Monday, Nov. 22 at 10:30 a.m., and interment took place at the church cemetery. A special thank you to the Vita Personal Care Home staff, who took the time and made the effort to make her comfortable over the last month.

ANGIE LOAT
1927 - 2003
Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 Mrs. Angie Loat of Swan River, Man., formerly of Kenville, Man., passed away at the age of 76 years. She was born June 16, 1927 in Steinbach, Man., to Cornelius and Judith (Wiebe) Kroeker.
Angie is survived by one son and two daughters: Richard
(Minnie) of Kenville, Man., Jodie (Chris) Molloy of Oakville, Ont. and Reta (Tony) Kathro of Melbourne, Australia; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers and one sister: Cornelius (Niel) Kroeker of Port Moody, B.C., Gerhard (George) Kroeker of Winnipeg, Man., John Kroeker of Ottawa, Ont. and Judy Kroeker of San Francisco, Cali.
Angie was predeceased by her parents, Cornelius and Judith; her loving husband Allen in 1999; son John in 1973; brothers: Isaac (Ike), Aron and Jacob (Jake); and a sister Livina (Lil).
Cremation has taken place and a private family interment followed in the family plot at the Birchwood Cemetery, Swan River, Man.
A memorial service was held from the St Andrew's United Church in Swan River, Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, 2 p.m., with Reverend Salesi Takau officiating.
The family considered everyone in attendance at the memorial service as an honorary pallbearer.

HUGH ALLAN MacDONALD
Hugh Allan MacDonald, age 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep at St Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, Man., Nov. 17, 2003.
Hugh was born Sept. 29, 1913 in Altamont, Man. He worked in the mines in Bissett, Sudbury, and South Burnaby; in the Co-op store in Prince Rupert, and for the CNR and Great West Life in Winnipeg.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Florence Emily
MacDonald (nee Marchant), whom he married Oct. 9, 1937; their four children: Jack and Mary MacDonald, Robert Allan and Valerie MacDonald, Velva Jean James, and Heather Darlene and Douglas Drimes; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. We will all miss a loving husband and good father.
Upon retirement, Hugh and Florence spent 18 wonderful winters in Quartzite, Arizona with many very valued friends. The summers were spent in Woodridge, Man., surrounded by more friends. The family thanks them all for their many kindnesses, good wishes, and expressions of sympathy; and wishes that in lieu of flowers, they make a donation to a charity of their choice.
Interment has taken place at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, Winnipeg.
