SUSAN WIEBE

Susan Wiebe (nee Thiessen), Grunthal, Man., mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom was 78 years old when she passed away suddenly and peacefully on Sept. 30, 2004 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Man.

Mom was born at home in Neuhorst, Man., May 31, 1926. Mom's mother died when she was only three years old, so her childhood was one of hard work and sacrifice. Poverty was very real to mom and her siblings when she was growing up. Grandpa often had to leave the farm and family responsibilities to the children while he went to work for a small daily wage. Mom had five sisters and one brother. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth and brother-in-law Ben Penner, sister Annie Ginter, her brother Abraham and sister-in-law Margaret Thiessen, and her sister Margaret Wiebe. She is also survived (from Dad's family) by her sisters-in-law, Annie Wiebe, Tina Sorenson, Mary Johnston and Agnes Berg.

Mom was baptized at the Stuartburn Sommerfelder Church on June 4, 1944, along with her soon-to-be husband, David D. Wiebe. Mom and Dad were married on July 30, 1944. They spent most of their married life on a farm north of Tolstoi, Man., where they raised a large family. Family and farming were very important to Mom and Dad. They taught us how to love and work, mostly through selfless example, and they had the knack of turning work into a sport or competition. Our childhood experiences were much different from that of our parents.

Mom and Dad were faithful members of the Stuartburn Sommerfelder Church, but after Dad died Mom started fellowshipping at the Stuartburn Gospel Chapel with some of her children and remained there even after her move off the farm. Mom became a neighbor to her Grunthal children when she moved there last fall. We feel extremely fortunate to have had her close by for that short while.

Mom was predeceased by her husband David; her two grandsons, Robert and Ricky Doerksen; a sister in infancy, Lena; her sister Mary and brother-in-law Jacob Friesen; brothers-in-law, Henry Ginter, Diedrich Wiebe, Rudy Sorenson, James T. Johnston and Abram Berg.

Memories of Mom will be cherished by many and treasured by children: Dave and Helen Wiebe, Dick and Bonnie Wiebe, Mary and Tony Caners, Peter and Rachelle Wiebe, Margaret and Ron Doerksen, John and Fran Wiebe, Helen and Gil Beaudette, Susan and John Fehr, and Betty and Jake Fehr, and their families.

Thank you Mom and Dad for instilling in us the importance of Joshua 24:15, "Choose you this day whom you will serve; as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" and demonstrating to us throughout your lives on earth God's Greatest Commandments, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and, Love your neighbor as yourself." Luke 10:27

Mom gently left this world and we, her family, would like to express our sincere appreciation to all who attended her in the Emergency Ward in Steinbach and the Intensive Care Unit at Grace Hospital. Your compassion did not go unnoticed. Thank-you!

The funeral service to celebrate the life of Susan Wiebe was held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at the Roseau River Bible Camp.

Pallbearers for the service were: David Wiebe, Rodney Caners, Greg Beaudette, Paul Wiebe, Kevin Beaudette and Michael Fehr. Officiating the service were Pastor Mark Funk and Pastor Randy Smart. Interment was held at the Stuartburn Sommerfelder Church Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations in Susan's memory may be made to Roseau River Bible Camp, Box 40, Roseau River, MB, R0A 1P0.

Arrangements entrusted to Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr., Steinbach, Man.

He is predeceased by his parents, brothers and sisters.

Henry farmed most of his life in the New Bothwell, Man. area. In his retirement Henry did odd jobs for friends and neighbors. Henry had been a resident in Rest Haven Nursing Home since 2001.

NICK MELNYCHUK

After a courageous battle with cancer, Nick Melnychuk, 76, of Vita, Man., passed away peacefully at the St. Boniface Hospital, Monday, Oct. 4, 2004.

He will be sadly missed and loved forever by his wife Olga; his son Edward; his daughter Sylvia (Orest) Makowsky; his grandchildren, Traci (Dave) Neufeld, Crystal and Kevin; one sister, Mary (Eli) Gushulak; and one brother, Alex of St. Adolphe, Man.

He was predeceased by his parents, Kost and Wasylena; and his sister Sophie.

Although he faced many health challenges over the last 10 years, he found the strength with the Lord's help to go on.

MARGARET (ISAAC) BARKMAN

Margaret (Isaac) Barkman, our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, was born to Peter L. and Maria Isaac on Sept. 9, 1909 at Hochstadt, Man., and passed away at the Maplewood Manor in Steinbach on Oct. 3, 2004, at the age of 95 years.

She spent her growing up years in Hochstadt. In 1930 she married our father, John Barkman, and they shared life's joys and sorrows for nearly 63 years. Dad preceded her in death in 1993.

Mother and Dad were converted and baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite at Kleefeld in December, 1935. Their faith and the church were very precious to them.

Mother and Dad resided on a farm, where they raised their family. She cheerfully and graciously accepted her role as wife and mother, taking care of us with joy and concern, especially for our spiritual welfare. She was blessed with a thankfulness which was especially evident in her later years.

Mother's eyes were open to nature's treasures, often being up with the sun and enjoying the song of the birds.

In 1966 they left the farm and moved to Steinbach, Man. Her later years were spent at the Maplewood Manor. She enjoyed her stay here and greatly appreciated the care given to her. We are thankful how tenderly God took her home. We will all miss her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Doreen and Fred Reimer, Carrot River, Sask., Viola Spensley, Edmonton, Alta., Norma and Don Toews, Montreal, Que., Verna and Bruce Penner, Saltcoats, Sask., Melvin and Gwen Barkman, St. Mary's, Ont., daughter-in-law Yvonne Barkman, Abbotsford, B.C., Audrey and Ed Enns, Winnipeg, Man., Wilbert and Verna, O'Haton, Alta., and Mabel and George Penner, Saltcoats, Sask.; 42 grandchildren; 89 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mother was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her brother, Henry; one son, Raymond; one son-in-law, Richard Spensley; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, 2 p.m., at the Kleefeld congregation of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Kleefeld. Ministers Ralph Wiebe and Marshall Toews will be officiating. Burial will take place in the adjoining cemetery.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel, Steinbach.

RONALD REMPEL
Aug. 14, 1951 - Oct. 28, 2003

Ron was born Aug. 14, 1951 in Winnipeg, Man., the fourth of five children for Gerhard and Katherine Rempel. Ron collapsed at home mid-afternoon of Oct. 27, suffering a sudden massive brain hemorrhage. He did not regain consciousness and was carried peacefully in God's arms, to his eternal rest in the early hours of Oct. 28 at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg.

Ron leaves to mourn his loving wife Marg and their three adult children, Jason, Joel and Alison; his mother Katherine; his brother Eric (Mary); sisters, Eleanore (John Woollard), Irma (Sieg Peters), Judy (David Rempel Smucker); his parents-in-law, John and Aggie Thiessen; brothers-in-law, Bill (Debbie) Thiessen, Ken (Irmgard) Thiessen, Larry (Lavina) Thiessen, Marvin (Rhonda) Thiessen; sister-in-law Marianne Thiessen; Jason's special friend Kristy Enns; and many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and hundreds of wonderful friends. Ron was predeceased by his father in 2000.

Ron's preschool years were lived on the family dairy farm near Grunthal, Man. In 1957 the family moved to a farm northwest of Steinbach, Man. He collected lots of great school memories, but it was at the University of Manitoba where he could at last study the subject he loved most. He graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture in 1972, the same spring he bought his first piece of farmland. He farmed in partnership with his father, and for a few years also with his older brother Eric.

June 7, 1975, Ron and Marg (Thiessen) were married at Camp Koinonia, where they met as summer camp staff three years earlier. In October 1975 they began a term as community development volunteers with Mennonite Central Committee, in a rural community in NE Brazil. Mastering the Portuguese language in a few months, Ron enjoyed working as an agronomist, and treasured many special friendships with local farmers, as well as with fellow volunteers.

Jason was born in Brazil in March 1977, Joel in Steinbach in November 1979, and Alison also in Steinbach in October 1981. As a father, Ron was very, very proud of each of his children, and their unique gifts and talents. He loved to sing and play guitar, or have all three children pile onto his lap for bedtime reading. Before the children could walk, they were on bike carriers being cycled around the section by their Dad, on his summer evening "crop tours".

Ron and Marg returned to the family farm in 1978. Ron loved farming. The challenges of weather and markets and production were met with energy, optimism and innovation. He could spend hours, weeks, and years researching his "creative solutions". Ron believed in the importance of producer organizations and farmers working together. He served willingly and enthusiastically for many years on MB Pork Council, on the board of the Prairie Swine Centre, and the MB Swine Seminar Committee. Ron enjoyed "talking farming" with anyone interested. Hosting barn tours, whether for trade delegations, relatives, or university students, were always given time and priority.

Ron enjoyed horses, recreational riding, and giving leadership to a local 4-H horse club for several years. Lots of music, reading, and appreciating the company of CBC Radio were other favorite pastimes, as were camping in summer and downhill skiing in winter. Annual spring break trips to the Rockies were family highlights. Other special family vacations included Canada's west coast, east coast, Brazil, Florida, Black Hills, Toronto, and many more.

Ron was a wonderful, loving husband. He and Marg were enthusiastic farming partners, thriving off one another's dreams and energy. He was always supportive of Marg's off-farm activities. He loved to surprise Marg. Their adventures included traveling together to the former Soviet Union, Brazil, Paraguay, Bangladesh, India, Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, always including finding the dirt roads and local farmers.

In September 1983 Ron suffered a seizure. His first surgery to deal with a brain tumor was Dec. 21, 1983. Subsequent radiation, another surgery 10 years later, followed by chemotherapy five years after that, and now just beginning another course of chemo, were markers in his incredibly strong resolve and determination to hold onto his health and live life 'normally'. Receiving permission to drive again almost three years ago was a huge gift, after nine years without a license. As to his health, he was a tireless fighter, meeting every challenge head-on and celebrating every triumph. He considered himself blessed with countless miracles. As family we are very grateful for the time we were given to walk our earthly journey together. Ron gave everything of himself so completely and selflessly, so tenderly and so gently. His faith was strong and deep. He lived every aspect of his life in close communion with his Creator and Savior. Ron's unfaltering trust in God gave all of us around him the courage to also trust.

The family would like to extend much appreciation for the excellent care they received from the staff at the Brain Tumor Clinic at CancerCare MB, Health Sciences Centre. Also deep gratitude to Maggie Smith and the staff at the Chemotherapy Unit, Bethesda Hospital. You all went far beyond the call of duty many times through the years, and your compassion and understanding were special gifts. To the pastoral staff and friends at Steinbach Mennonite Church you carried our family so often. We have experienced the prayers and kindnesses of so very many friends, near and far. Thank you.

The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, with interment at the Heritage Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to Canadian Foodgrains Bank, 400 280 Smith Street, Box 767, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2L4

Ron we love you. We miss you. We treasure every memory, and will honor and cherish your legacy forever. We give you into God's eternal peace. Marg, Jason, Joel, and Alison.

Arrangements entrusted to Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Man.

MARTHA GOOSSEN

Martha Toews Goossen was born Sept. 7, 1923 to Henry D. and Anna Wiens Toews at Cimarron, Kansas. After suffering several years from Parkinson's, she peacefully left this world at Maplewood Manor, Steinbach, Man., Nov. 20, 2004, reaching the age of 81 years.

Her childhood days were spent in the community of Montezuma, Kansas. At the age of 13, she felt God personally calling her, and she became a Christian. Minister Frank Wenger baptized her into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite on Dec. 13, 1936. On April 3, 1949 she married Abe P. Goossen of Rosenort, Man. Five children, three sons and two daughters, were born to this union. They established their home in Rosenort, raising their family and living there until declining health required their move to Maplewood Manor in December 2000.

Mother accepted life's challenges with courage and fortitude. She was not one to back down in the face of problems. She often talked and laughed about the many challenges she faced as a young bride when she moved a thousand miles from home. Now in her sunset years, she faced her physical ailments with an attitude of courage and acceptance. We, as a family, and those who cared for her, often marveled at the grace she portrayed in spite of her circumstances.

Mother was a good homemaker and always enjoyed entertaining company. She loved to cook and her garden and flowers were one of her delights. She loved to sing and even as she was failing, she would often sing again the little choruses she had taught us as children. Her faith in God remained strong through her life. We have many memories of her prayers and we are comforted knowing that she was at peace with her Lord and was ready to meet Him.

She leaves to mourn her departure: Abe Goossen, her husband of 55 years; her children: Joyce (Dalton) Duerksen of Rosenort, Man., Robert (Joanne) of Altona, Man., Charles (Audrey) of Berwick, Nova Scotia, Gordon (Laurel) of Altona, Nadine (Ike) Reimer of Lakeville, Nova Scotia; six sisters; two brothers; seven brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her parents, two grandchildren, two sisters, nine brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

The funeral was held at the Rosenort Church of God in Christ Mennonite on Nov. 24, 2004, followed by interment in the church cemetery.

The family would like to thank everyone who visited Mom and encouraged her, especially now in the last years as she was failing. A special thank-you to the staff at Maplewood Manor, who cared for her so tenderly.

Arrangements entrusted to Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr., Steinbach, Man.
