ANTON HORVATH

Peacefully, April 30, 2002 at Bethesda Place, Steinbach, Man., with family at his side, Anton Horvath passed into eternal rest, having reached the age of 88 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters: Mary Horvath of Woodridge, Man., Betty and John Sarko of Welland, Ont., Agnes Nagy of Evansburg, Alta., Irma and Mike Geng of Watertown, New York. His memory will also be treasured by 18 nieces and nephews and their families, along with numerous Horvath cousins.

Anton was born Jan. 17, 1914 to Frank and Vera on their Menisino homestead - the area where he then continued to reside throughout his childhood and working life. In 1985 he moved to seniors' housing in Woodridge and in 1993 his health state required a move to the Bethesda Personal Care Home.

His family has fond memories of a kind, sensitive and friendly brother and uncle who faced more than the usual challenges of life without complaint; who found enjoyment in walking many miles to visit with neighbors, experiencing nature, and taking in the local dances and social activities.

Anton was predeceased by his parents: Frank in 1949 and Vera in 1977; and his brothers: John (Slim) in 1991, Frank in 1994 and Joe in 2001; by one nephew Hillard Horvath in 1986 and one niece Anne (Horvath) Lempen in 2000.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. from the International Christian Fellowship Church, Piney, Man. with Larry Hirst, chaplain of Bethesda Place officiating. Interment followed at the Menisino Cemetery. Viewing took place at the church prior to the service.

Pallbearers were his family members: Martin Horvath, Eddie Horvath, Joe Horvath, Frank Horvath, Stanley Goodman and Grant Goodman.

The family is deeply appreciative of the care and compassionate concern shown to "Andy" during his stay at Bethesda Personal Care Home/Bethesda Place. Their efforts did truly make this "his home" for these past nine years.

In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made to Bethesda Place Chapel Fund, Box 939, Steinbach, MB, R0A 2A0.

Arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel, Steinbach.

ÉLISA DESHARNAIS (nee Martin)

Surrounded by family and nursing staff, Élisa Desharnais serenely passed away at Foyer Valade, May 1, 2002, at the age of 100 years and 10 months.

When she was only four years old, Élisa's family left Saint-Alexis de Matapédia, Qué., to settle in Laurier, Man., and then in Transcona, Man. Élisa married Ovila Desharnais in 1919 and moved to Saint-Pierre-Jolys, Man., where they lived on a farm in Carey and raised their five children.

Élisa was predeceased by her husband in 1979; by a daughter, Lucille (Soeur Joseph-Armand) in 1962; by a son Henri in November 2001; as well as by her parents and 10 brothers and sisters. She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Irène, Petite Soeur de la Sainte-Famille, of Sherbrooke, Que and Amanda, Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, Winnipeg; by her son Armand (Claire), of St Pierre-Jolys and daughter-in-law Gertrude of St. Vital, Man. She also leaves to mourn her passing, 15 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nephews and nieces, two of whom remain special because they spent time living with the Desharnais', Edouard Martin and Yvette Carrière.

A woman of deep faith and aware of the needs of her time, Élisa was deeply committed to her local church and to worthy community causes. She will be remembered as a compassionate woman who took great pleasure in being of service to others. After having raised her family, she devoted a great deal of her time looking after the poor for whom she prepared many boxes of clothing. Her pleasant personality, her cheerfulness, her keen sense of humor, her enthusiasm and positive outlook on life, as well as her love of people brought sunshine into the lives of many. While a resident of Foyer Valade and restricted to her wheelchair, she took to playing her mouth organ again; that, along with her smile, was her way of bringing joy to others, residents and staff alike.

The family members wish to thank doctors and nursing staff at Foyer Valade for the tender loving care given to their mother. In lieu of flowers, relatives and friends may wish to make a donation to Foyer Valade, 450 River Road, Winnipeg, MB, R2M 5M4.

Prayers were held at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons Street, Friday, May 3, 7:30 p.m. The funeral was held at Saint-Pierre-Jolys, Saturday, May 4, 10:30 a.m., with viewing prior to the celebration.

HELEN FRIESEN

Helen Loewen Friesen was born to Isaac P. and Mary Loewen on May 5, 1922 at Steinbach, MB. She peacefully passed away on May 8, 2002 at the Maplewood Manor, Steinbach, MB. She reached the age of 80 years. Death was caused by complications following a major stroke she suffered on April 20.

Mother's childhood was spent in the Blumenort, MB area. She was converted at a young age and became a member of the Kleinemende church. On Dec. 27, 1942 she was united in marriage to Cornie L. Friesen. In 1949 they moved to Los Jagueyes, Chihuahua, Mexico with three small children. Seven more children were born there, making her a very busy mother.

Dad and Mom were deeply concerned about their salvation and the spiritual welfare of their children. Feeling a need for a deeper spiritual life, they sincerely searched out God's will. The Lord led them to the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite and upon their faith, were baptized in 1959 by Minister John N. Penner.

Our parents always carried a concern for the souls of men. They were actively involved in the mission outreach in Mexico, serving in several different locations. All of her life, Mom kept a keen interest in the progress of the mission work, especially that of Mexico.

Dad was ordained to the ministry in 1966 and Mom faithfully filled her place as a minister's wife. Her faith in God was alive and real and she prayed much. She enjoyed her family and was deeply grateful that all her children and grandchildren embrace the true faith.

Our parents with the eight youngest children moved to Whitemouth, MB in March of 1968. Dad's sudden passing in 1980 left her very lonely. Mom moved to the Maplewood Manor in Steinbach in 1997 where she was cared for very lovingly. She had a sweet disposition and a ready smile. Last week, she grieved the sudden passing of her son-in-law Mark Jantz although she could not express herself verbally.

Those left with precious memories are 10 children: Leonard and Vada, Honeygrove, Texas; John and Velma, Mary and Dan Friesen, Ed and Rowena, Leona and Norman Toews, all of Elma, MB; Evelina and Barry Hrappstead, Swan River, MB; Roselyn and Darryl Toews, Hadashville, MB; Mildred Jantz, Ringwood, Oklahoma; Kathy and Sheldon Toews, Elma, MB and Levina, Goltry, Oklahoma; 40 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two brothers: John and Helen Loewen and Dietrich Loewen, two sisters: Elizabeth and Menno Dueck, and Tina and Elmer Plett and one sister-in-law Gertie Loewen. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son-in-law, two granddaughters, three brothers and two sisters-in-law.

We as the family would like to thank the Maplewood Manor staff for the tender loving care they gave our dear Mother. May God bless you.

Viewing will be held on Saturday, May 11 from 6-8 p.m. with a devotional at 7 p.m. at the Sobering Funeral Chapel, Beausejour. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 12 at the Whitemouth Mennonite Church, Whitemouth, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gospel Tract and Bible Society, Ste. Anne, MB, ROA 1RO.
