ARLENE HENRIE
Saturday, April 10, 2004 at St. Boniface Hospital, Arlene Henrie passed away at the age of 42.
Arlene is survived by her parents, Lionel and Rose Henrie of Sandilands, Man. Also mourning her passing are her sister Leona Henrie; brother Wade Henrie; two nephews, René Perron, Gilles Perron; niece Chantal Perron; and extended family.
A Memorial Service of Remembrance will be held Friday, April 16, 2004, 11 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel.

KATHRYN T. PENNER
We celebrate the passing of Kathryn Toews Penner to her eternal home, Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Bethesda Hospital, with her family at her bedside.
Kathryn will be forever remembered and missed by her son Llew (Marlys) Penner of Steinbach, Man., daughter Gwen (Garry) Blatz of Steinbach, granddaughter Marsha Penner of Tucson, Arizona, granddaughter Julie (Barry) Mungall of Winnipeg, Man., granddaughter Jayda Lesage and great-grandson Taylor of Olds, Alta., and grandson Chris Lesage of Kananaskis, Alta.
Born Jan. 19, 1921 in McPherson County, Kansas, the second of five children, Mom grew up during exceptionally difficult times. Her parents were one of the many who lost their Kansas farm during the 1930's. Mother remembered these times, and her decisions in life always reflected good stewardship of all that she owned. She completed grade 8 and reminisced of her school days. She meticulously saved memorabilia from her school days and passed it on to her children in the last years. As an adult, prior to her marriage, she worked for over 30 different families as a housekeeper. She was a housekeeper for the "Greens'" in McPherson at the time of her marriage and spoke fondly of their kindness to her, and often told of the things she learned in their home. With her meticulous tendencies, she was no doubt a valuable asset to the affairs of their household.
Kathryn married Jacob Claude Penner March 14, 1954, and moved to Greenland, Man. One son and one daughter were added to this union. They operated a small poultry farm in the Greenland area, until Dad's health did not allow that to continue. Mom spent the years 1967 to 1988 providing some level of care to Dad while he was institutionalized. She spent countless hours reading to him and feeding him.
Mom enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and was as meticulous a gardener as she was a housekeeper. She enjoyed the family pets, and made it a priority to ensure they were well cared for, to the point of frying eggs and serving them warm to the dog, while eggs were plentiful on the farm. Later, after moving to Steinbach and living in an apartment, she even allowed the cat to sit on the fridge on a regular basis, without shooing it away! She loved her grandchildren and spent many hours with her granddaughters when they were growing up. Mom was not a public person, but served her family with a loyalty and tenacity, patching clothes, driving the grandchildren to and fro, meeting them at the school bus, and so on. It was always important to her that her children were warm, even if that meant embarrassment for a daughter who had to go to school wearing thick unsightly leotards!
Her faith was central to her life here, and she acknowledged and personally embraced Christ's work on the cross for her. Her last days and hours were a peaceful testimony of that.
Kathryn's passing has left a void, but her wishes are clearly outlined in this prose, which she left with her funeral requests:
"When I am gone, remember I am with Jesus
Then do not mourn because I've passed away
Life holds so many griefs and disappointments
And will you cry because I did not stay?
`tis only for a spell we must be parted
Not many years on earth to us are given
And when our Saviour tells me you are coming
I'll go with Him and welcome you to heaven".
The funeral service for Kathryn Penner was held Wednesday, April 14, 2004, 2 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel. Interment was at Greenland Cemetery. JOHN B. ANDRES
John B. Andres passed away peacefully Easter Sunday morning, April 11, 2004 at Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, Man.
He was born Sept. 23, 1912 in the Ukraine to John J. and Tina (Enns) Andres. They immigrated to Canada in 1929. He married Lydia Engbrecht in 1937. He is survived by his children, Adina (Doug) Robb, Erna (Dennis) Friesen, John (Edna), Ronald (Cheryl), Elsie (Larry) Godwin, Nellie (Guy) Marcoux, Karen Andres (Arne Anderson); two sisters, Nettie Toews and Tina Pankratz. He has 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lydia, in 1964, son-in-law Glenn Friesen in 1973 and stepson Alvin Reimer in 2002. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Helen, and stepchildren, Amanda Cundal, Vic Reimer, Jake Reimer and Edna Joyce, and their families.
John began his adult life working in Altona, Man., and in 1942 moved to Steinbach to begin farming in Friedensfeld, Man. The farm was a source of pride until the end, as the farm is still operated by his son and grandsons. In his retirement years, John looked back fondly to the years spent as miller of the Mennonite Village Museum. He considered himself fortunate to be able to combine the work he enjoyed with his love of socializing. His ever-present sense of humor and love of storytelling was appreciated by all who had an opportunity to spend time with him.
The funeral service was held Thursday, April 15, 2004, 11 a.m., at the Steinbach Mennonite Brethren Church, with Rev. Abe Klassen officiating. Interment took place at Heritage Cemetery.

STEVE KRAYNYK
August 28, 1923 – May 5, 2004
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, stepfather, step-grandfather and Gido, Steve Kraynyk, May 5, 2004, at the Vita Hospital, at the age of 80 years.
His memory will be cherished by his two daughters, Vicky Waskul and Elsie (George) Jaman; and son Stanley Kraynyk; stepchildren, Bart (Ruth) Kulyk, Ron (Myrt) Kulyk, Helen (Bill) Chubaty, Louie (Betty) Kulyk, Carol (Ed) Kozera and Gerry (Connie) Kulyk; six grandchildren, Cathy Jaman, Jennifer (Nigel) Ramjohn, Colin (Allison) Waskul, Darren Waskul, Brittney and Adriane Kraynyk; three great-grandsons, Jayden and Evan Ramjohn and Andrew Waskul; 14 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren; one brother Pete (Elsie) Kraynyk.
He was predeceased by his first wife Anne in 1980, his second wife Mary in 2002, his parents, three sisters and six brothers.
Steve farmed in Arbakka, Man. until 1962, then moved with his family to the community of Vita, Man., at which time he began working in the construction industry until his retirement in 1980. He entered palliative care at the Vita Hospital on Jan. 8, 2004.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at the Vita Hospital for their compassionate care and also to everyone who came to visit him.
The funeral service was held Monday, May 10, 2004 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, Man., with Reverend Deacon Leon Twerdun officiating. Interment at the Vita Community Cemetery.
Pallbearers for the service were Darren Waskul, Nigel Ramjohn, Cathy Jaman, Brittney Kraynyk, Gerry Kulyk and Lloyd Kulyk.

PETER KLASSEN
Peacefully on May 6, 2004, at the Riverview Health Centre, with his family by his side, as a result of lung cancer and Parkinson’s disease, Peter passed away.
Peter is survived by his wife Ruth; daughters, Margaret Bouchard (Ron) and Karen Peters (Keith); grandchildren, Crystal Feuillatre, Denise Feuillatre, Samantha Bouchard, Kalie Peters and Kasia Peters. Also surviving him are his mother, Anne Klassen of Winkler, Man.; brothers, Henry, Barney, John and David; sisters, Mary Fehr and Shirley Pontifex; and their families.
Peter was predeceased by his father, Bernard Klassen, and sister, Ann Truscott.
Peter was born in Winkler, Man., March 12,1942 and lived in Winnipeg, Man. most of his adult life. He married Ruth Penner of Steinbach, Man. in 1967.
Peter was employed with Reimer Trucking and was a bus driver with Winnipeg Transit for over 25 years, winning several safety awards.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, May 11 at the St. Vital Evangelical Mennonite Church, 2005 St. Mary’s Road, Winnipeg. Peter was laid to rest in Mennonite Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ron Davey, Peter’s Home Care Workers, and especially Kurt and all the staff at Riverview Health Centre.

HENRY E. GOERTZEN
March 3, 1935 – May 7, 2004
In the early morning hours of May 7, 2004, Henry E. Goertzen, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 69.
Henry was born March 3, 1935 in Ste. Anne, Man. He spent his growing up years in Landmark, Man. Sept. 7, 1958 he married Margaret Harms and they settled on a farm near Steinbach, Man., where they raised cattle and hogs. In 1972 he moved to Steinbach. He had a diverse career and worked for Bergman Meat Products for 15 years, where he met lifelong friends. He moved on to a number of positions before he took a position with the City of Steinbach as the driver for the Handi-Van for 16 years, a job that he loved and where he showed deep care and respect for the aged and infirm. He was very athletic, playing for the Landmark Dutchmen, and was an avid hockey and football fan his whole life. Henry was a very gifted and talented singer and participated in many choirs and groups. He also loved his hobby farm, which he built with his own hands and where he raised horses. Henry was also active in the community and received acknowledgement for his volunteer work for the Canadian Diabetes Association. He has six children and four grandchildren, who will miss him dearly. Throughout his life he had a deep and abiding faith in Christ, which sustained him through significant health challenges.
Henry Goertzen will be deeply missed by his wife of 46 years, Margaret; two sons, Dale and Danny; four daughters, Diane (Doug) Janzen, Angela (Kit) Funk, Valerie Goertzen and Mark Harrison, and Tanya Goertzen and Adrian van Gorp; as well as four granddaughters, Elizabeth, Aura, Lauren and Catherine. He will also be missed by four brothers: John (Betty), Abe (Irmie), Cornie (Hilda), Peter (Marilyn); and four sisters, Adina (Ken) Wicklund, Martha (Neil) Rempel, Agnes (Helmut) Klassen and Annie (Cliff) Arlt. He was predeceased by his parents, Isaac and Maria Goertzen, and his brother Dave Goertzen.
The family deeply appreciates the love and support of extended family, friends and the Gospel Fellowship church family, who were always there to support him. We are also deeply grateful to the Canadian healthcare system, Dr. Ilchyna, and all the nurses of the Bethesda Hospital for their care and compassion.
The funeral was held Wednesday, May 12 at the Christian Fellowship Church, Steinbach, Man., officiated by Pete Blatz and Jack Heppner. Interment was at the Heritage Cemetery. LUCIENNE EVELINE MARIE NICOLAS (nee Bisson)
Lucienne Nicolas, beloved wife of Eugene for 61 years, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Friday, May 7, 2004 at Ste. Anne Hospital, at the age of 83. Her memory will be forever cherished and she will be lovingly and deeply missed.
She leaves a precious legacy of love and dedication to those who mourn her passing: her faithful husband, Eugene; and their eight children, Lorraine (Rod) Matheson of Toronto, Ont., Louis (Donna) of Winnipeg, Man., Florent (Carole) of Whitehorse, Yukon, Jeannine (Emile) Carriere, of Winnipeg, Louise (Norman) Broesky of Ste. Anne, Man., Alice (Lenard) Doroshuk of Rocky Mountain House, Alta., Omer (Stella) of Winnipeg, Evelyne (Roger) Vien of Winnipeg; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; her sister Aurore of Hearst, Ont., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lucienne was predeceased by her parents, Omer and Georgiana (Genereux) Bisson; her brothers, Antonin, Stan, Omer, Aime; her sisters, Alice, Marguerite and Louise-Anna; and her grandson, Richard Nicolas.
Our beloved mother will be fondly remembered in so many ways. We know the deep bond of love there was between her and Dad. She was so faithful in visiting him and ensuring he was receiving the best care. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her source of pride and joy. Throughout her life, Mom enjoyed crafts and gardening; she loved playing the piano when she could, but her passion was her relationship with her family. Each one of us is enriched because of it, and that love is etched forever in our hearts.
Though your smile is gone forever
And your hand we cannot touch
We will never lose your memory
Because we loved you much
Thank you for the life and love you gave us
The happy times we shared

Services were held Wednesday, May 12, 2 p.m., at the Ste. Anne Roman Catholic Church, with viewing half an hour prior to the service. Burial took place at the parish cemetery. Father Rene Chartier officiating. Donations in Lucienne’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

YUSTINA PERUN
1920 - 2004
Suddenly, May 7, 2004, Yustina Perun of Stuartburn, Man. passed away at Vita Hospital, at the age of 83 years.
Yustina will be sadly missed by her one son, Morris (Irene) Perun; three grandchildren: Sheila (Les) Yarema, Angie (Shane) Chubaty, Christine Perun (Ryan); two great-grandchildren: Alycia and Stephen Chubaty; her sisters: Pauline (late Jim) Pylypjuk, Kay (Peter) Bezrucko; brothers: Harry (Gertie) Pulak, Steve Pulak; brother-in-law John (Elva) Perun of Crossville, Tennessee, USA.
She was predeceased by: husband Steve Perun on March 17, 1989; brother Billy Pulak; sister Ann Orsulak.
Yustina was born June 15, 1920 in Pansy, Man. On Oct. 21, 1944 she married Steve Perun.
When they moved to Stuartburn they established a home, a family and a farm. She enjoyed gardening, and all outdoor activities. She was well known for attending and helping in all church and community functions. She will be sadly missed by her friends and neighbors.

BEN B. DUECK
Ben B. Dueck, born June 9, 1917 in Kleefeld, Man., died peacefully Sunday, May 9, 2004 in Steinbach, Man. He is survived by his wife Helena; sons, Allan (Laura Sue) and Stanley; daughters, Luana, Rosemarie, Lynnette; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister Nettie and brother Neil. He will be greatly missed and loved.
Ben was a well-known teacher at the Steinbach Regional Secondary School, Grunthal, Blumenhof, and Clover Plains, working in the whole range of arts and music. He was happiest in his garden, spending time with his family, and interacting with people from every walk of life.

The funeral service was held Thursday, May 13, 10:30 a.m., at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, Steinbach. Interment at Heritage Cemetery.
