NINA ALENE GIESBRECHT
Peacefully, with her family at her side, Nina passed away Monday, March 10, 2003, at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Man. She was predeceased by her husband Bert, whom she missed deeply. She was also predeceased by a grandchild, Casey, and by her parents, Bob and Annie Mason.
Nina leaves to celebrate her life, her daughters: Fay (Don) Ernst, Diane (Lorne) Hunter; her two perfect granddaughters: Maegan Ernst and Abby Hunter; and two sisters: Joyce Bailey and Roberta Golding and their families.
Nina was born April 10, 1918 in Vassar, Man. Most of her life was spent in Ste. Anne, Man., where she went to school, married Bert, raised their daughters, and made many lasting friendships. Her happiest times were those she spent surrounded by her family nurturing them, sewing or knitting for them, or simply watching them grow. She will be remembered for her homemade buns, her beautifully crafted quilts, her violets and her gentle ways.
Thank you to the special people who offered their friendship and their care towards the end of her journey.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 14, 2003, 2 p.m., at the Steinbach United Church, 541 Main St., with ash interment to follow at a later date in the warmth of spring.
Instead of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

HELENE DYCK
1917-2003
Peacefully in the early morning of Sunday, March 9, 2003, with her family at her side at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Helene Dyck of Steinbach, aged 86, went on to eternal rest after being in frail health for some time.
Besides her loving husband Jacob A. Dyck of 58 years, our mother is survived by four children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Peter and his wife Aida of Steinbach, their twin daughters Lisa (Dan) Stiver, Leilani (Jamie) Kagan and son Joshua Kagan, all of Winnipeg; daughter Helene of Steinbach; son Jake and wife Dianne and their children Tyler and Kassandra of Steinbach, and daughter Anne and husband Edwin Janz and their children Leighton and Natasha, also of Steinbach.
Mom is also survived by a sister, Tina (Janzen), and her husband Peter Loewen of the Steinbach area, and sister-in-law Justina Quiring of Germany.
She was predeceased by her brother Johan Quiring of Tajikistan in 1987.
Our mother was born on Feb. 11, 1917 in Gruenfeld, Ukraine to Peter and Anna Quiring. She lost her parents early, her father to the violence of post-revolutionary Russia and her mother to illness. She was baptized in her home community in 1942.
Raised in several foster homes, she grew up learning a variety of skills, including photography and film processing, animal care and farm mechanics. She was also fluent in several languages.
Mother was a determined woman who was able to survive many early hardships, among them the great famines forced on the rural population by Josef Stalin which claimed millions.
In her mid-twenties, she became engaged to our father who grew up in a nearby village. Although separated by circumstance of war, the young couple, having earlier fled Ukraine, were reunited and married in Germany on Feb. 22, 1945. The wedding meal was briefly interrupted by a bombing attack which sent everyone to the basement for safety.
The newlyweds managed to escape to the Allied-controlled German zone, thereby being spared a brutal forced return to Russia as were so many other Mennonite people. The couple's first child, a son, was born the following year. More than two years later, the small family managed to emigrate to Canada where they spent the first year in Pincher Creek, Alberta on the Isaac Penner farm to work off the $400 travel debt.
The move to Steinbach was their last. Here Mother devoted herself to her family, all the while supplementing family income with part-time work in the beet fields and helping out with Dad's sideline custodial work for many years. She took great pride in the large family garden which each year yielded an abundance of produce and fruit while thousands of flowers brightened the neighborhood.
Mom and Dad had been members of Steinbach Mennonite Church since Dec. 14, 1952, where Mother actively participated in the sewing circle (Naehverein) and also worked for many years in janitorial services.
Although forced by failing health to ease off on some of these activities in more recent years, Mother was still busy baking the day before she entered hospital for her final few days.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 12, at 2 p.m. at Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Boulevard, with Rev. Peter Harms and Rev. Abe Neufeld officiating. Interment followed at the Heritage Cemetery. Pallbearers are the six grandchildren.
Donations in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Foodgrains Bank will be gratefully accepted.
The family expresses its gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Myron Thiessen and nursing staff at Bethesda Hospital for making every effort to ensure Mother's last days were comfortable.

PETER P. D. WIEBE
Peacefully, March 6, 2003, with his wife Sarah and children at his bedside, Peter P.D. Wiebe passed away at the Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, Man., at the age of 75 years.
Dad was born March 28, 1927 in Osterwick, Man., and was baptized on the confession of his faith in 1948. He married Sarah Toews on Sept. 22, 1948.
It was with great joy that Dad taught Sunday School for 20 years and served on the church board for 13 years.
Dad and Mom lived in New Bothwell, Man. until 1987, at which time they moved to Steinbach.
Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife Sarah of 54 years; five daughters: Helen (Peter) Dueck of Kleefeld, Man., Lisa (Rick) Carlson of La Broquerie, Man., Mary (Steve) Harel of Marchand, Man., Martha (Doug) Braun of Miami, Man., Barb (Darrell) Hornan of Steinbach, Man.; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Frank (Sally) of Grunthal, Man.; five sisters: Jessie Funk, Mary Funk, Helen (Jake) Klassen, Barbara Wiebe, all of Steinbach, Eva Zurbyk of Winnipeg, Man.; and numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, Bishop Peter S. and Justina Wiebe; three brothers: Abe, John and William; and one sister Elizabeth.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, March 11, 2003, 2 p.m., at the New Bothwell Sommerfeld Church, New Bothwell, Man., with interment following at the Church Cemetery. Viewing was held Monday, March 10, 2003 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel.

LINDA DAUPHINAIS
Linda Dauphinais, nee Burgie, aged 56 years, beloved wife of Roy Dauphinais of Dominion City, Man., passed away Sunday, March 9 at the Morris General Hospital.
Besides her dear husband, she leaves to mourn her passing her children and their families: Susan and Vilmos Legler of Yellowknife, N.W.T., grandchildren Jolene, Zena, William, and Shylee; Douglas and Sandy of Winnipeg, Man., grandchildren Brittney, Travis and CeLynn; Donna and Claude Sarrasin of Altona, Man., grandchildren Christopher and Rebecca Ross; and her mother Lorraine Burgie of Toronto, Ont. Also surviving are brother Bob Burgie, sister Jeannette Ireland, both of Toronto, sister Pamela Best of Nepean, Ont. and Uncle Art and Ida Dauphinais of Ridgeville, Man. Linda was predeceased by her father, Phillip Burgie.
The funeral service will be held at the Friedensthal Zion Lutheran Church Friday, March 14, at 2 p.m., with interment in the South Ridge Cemetery. Viewing at the church prior to the service. A reception will follow at the Ridgeville Hall.

PETER MORRIS PERCHALUIK
While on a holiday with friends in Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica, Peter Perchaluik passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at the age of 62 years, beloved husband of Judith and beloved father of Wendy.
Peter leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Judith of Winnipeg, Man., and loving daughter Wendy of Victoria, B.C. Also surviving, his loving sister Rose and husband Elias Giftakis and their children Jonathon and Angeline; brother John and wife Sandra Perchaluik and their children Susan, Robert, Wayne and Debbie. Peter will be sadly missed by his nieces, Donna Thordarson, Carla Emler, Debbie Lee and mother-in-law Myrtle Everson. Peter also leaves to mourn many dear cousins, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents John and Sophie Perchaluik.
A celebration of Peter's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. in Winnipeg, Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 3 p.m., with Rev. Colin Peterson officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Judith and Wendy want to especially thank Gordon and Mona, George and Faye, Brenda and Peter, Niels and Chris, Donna and Rick for their kindness and support at our most difficult time. We also want to thank all members of our immediate family for your support and kindness.

NELLIE (ANASTASIA) SOKOLYK
With great sadness, the children announce the peaceful passing of their beloved mom, Nellie Sokolyk, March 7, 2003, at the age of 94, at the Vita Hospital, with her family by her side.
Mom was born July 18, 1908, on the family farm in Stuartburn, Man., the daughter of Wasylyna and Stephen Horbul. In 1935 she married her husband John of 43 years, until his passing in 1975. Together they operated the family farm and for a short period of time a general store in Stuartburn, until they moved to Vita, Man. in 1969.
Mom was predeceased by her parents; husband John; daughter-in-law Mary; all four brothers, Harry, William, Alex, and Mike; and all three of her sisters, Maria Sawchuk, Hafia Matichuk and Annie Nawolski.
She is survived by her three sons, Eugene (Zelma), Bill (Jan), and Nestor; four grandchildren, Perry Sokolyk and friend Denise, Terry (Shirley) Sokolyk, Travis Sokolyk, Candace (Chris) Matthewson; and three great-grandchildren, twins Joey and Jewels Sokolyk and Emily Matthewson.
Mom was a kind and pleasant person and a friend to all. She had a gift for sharing her pleasant personality with all those around her. She enjoyed the company of her neighbours, the friends at Shady Oaks, and more recently her friends and staff at the Vita Personal Care Home. She had a great sense of humour and a smile for all the people that came near her. In her younger days mushroom picking and berry picking were always on her mind. She loved gardening and tending to the flowers all her life. She had a great love for birds and always had a bird feeder or two on the go. Her appreciation of animals was always evident, even if it meant lawn ornaments. Mom always lived her life graciously no matter what came her way.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Vita Personal Care Home and the Vita Hospital, also to all the care workers who helped mom. The family owes a deep debt of gratitude to Mrs. Pohaychuk and Mrs. Perun for their unwavering friendship and help given to mom.
Prayers were held at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Vita, Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at 7 p.m.
The funeral service was held at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Parish, Stuartburn, with Rev. Father Ihor Royik officiating, Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at 10 a.m. Interment followed the service in the Parish Cemetery.

OSCAR NORBERT BEAUDRY
With his family by his side, Dad left to join his life partner of 58 years, Isabelle, Tuesday, March 11, 2003.
Oscar was born in Vassar, Man., Sept. 16, 1920. He was raised on the family farm and spent the first 30 years of his life farming and working in the woods.
In 1951, he moved his family to Winnipeg, Man., where he started his career with the CNR, working in the Transcona Shop Yards at many different jobs until his retirement in 1986. He was also a carpenter, auto mechanic, and a jack-of-all-trades, turning his hand to many jobs, helping family and friends in any capacity that he could.
He metered out discipline strictly, but with a gentle hand, also opinions and advice even if we didn't want it.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Isabelle in 2002; by his parents, Edmond and Josephine Beaudry; brothers, Edmond, Roland and Victor; and sisters, Roseida, Cecile, Florence, Edna and in infancy Jeanne D'Arc.
He is survived by sons, Rene (Sigrid), Guy (Sheri); daughters, Beatrice and Marcelle (Lyle); grandchildren, Andrea Rozsa (Ken), Deirdre (Jeff Melcosky), Ryan, Hannah, Paige and Lauren Beaudry; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Tiffany and Courtney Rozsa and great-grandson Austin McCormick; sisters, Jeanne Tardiff (Dollard), Loraine Maroon (James) and Marguerite Middleton; sister-in-law Theresa Sleeman; and brothers-in-law, Arthur and Roger Bonot; along with many nieces and nephews.
We would like to give special thanks to the third floor staff of the Foyer Valade for their great care of Dad during his stay there.
Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, March 15, 2 p.m., in Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy. 1 East at Navin Road. Interment to follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens.

SARAH BARKMAN

Sarah Barkman was Born June 29, 1912 to Peter and Katherine Barkman on a farm near Kleefeld, Man. During her teenage years she lived with her parents near Landmark, Man.
Most of Sarah's adult years were spent in Winnipeg, Man., at 1863 Logan Avenue. Here she tended her garden and flowers and loved to take care of her many house plants. For many years she worked as a cleaning lady, brightening up the many homes where she worked. Through the ministry of Brooklands Mennonite Brethren Church she renewed her faith in the Lord.
In 1991, she moved to Steinbach, Man. to the Cedarwood Apartments, and then later to the Personal Care Home, now Bethesda Place. There she resided for 41/2 years.
She went to her eternal reward March 6, 2003, at the age of 90.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Oakes of Winnipeg; her brother, John and wife Esther of Kleefeld; and brother-in-law Peter Goertzen and wife Mary of Steinbach; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, six sisters, and one brother.
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Thiessen, and the caring staff at Bethesda Place for their tender loving care.
