OLGA SCHMIDT

Olga Schmidt passed away peacefully April 20, 2003 at Fred Douglas Lodge, Winnipeg, Man. She was born Oct. 8, 1913 at Greenridge, Man., where she lived for much of her life. In 1942 she married Julius Schmidt and together they raised eight children, farming at Greenridge until 1958, when the family moved to Dominion City, Man.

Mom was a resourceful homemaker and living "in town" did not prevent her raising food, both vegetables and livestock, to feed a large family. An abundant crop was never wasted; she simply found or created a new recipe to utilize it. In later years, she and Dad continued to garden, for the sheer joy of making things grow and sharing with the family. Mom's green thumb was legendary and she happily shared her skills and transferred her passion for gardening to all of her children. Her gifts of food were an expression of her love - whether she grew it, baked it, pickled or preserved it, we were all to share it.

Family was of prime importance, and if mothering was her vocation, grandparenting was her reward. She delighted in her grandchildren and encouraged them in exploits and pursuits she would have barely tolerated in her children. Visits to Grandma's house yielded an endless supply of treats. Her great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and during the last year of her life she especially enjoyed the regular visits with her newest great-granddaughter.

Predeceased by her husband Julius in 1998 and one son in infancy, she is survived by eight children, Elsie Berg, Florence (Bob) Stanke, Clarence (Jan), Eileen (Clayton) Gunn, Ray (Valerie), Doreen (John) Wilson, Albert (Annie-Marie) and Leo (Janice); son-in-law Bill Berg; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Ewald and Emil Bohn; and sister-in-law Verna Bohn; as well as many nieces and nephews. Her sisters, Millie Elleck and Hilda Walters, and one brother Reinhold Bohn predeceased her.

The family would like to thank the volunteers and staff at Fred Douglas Lodge for their patience and care over the last 6 1/2 years, and particularly acknowledge Joyce McLean for her kindness and dedication.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 24, 2 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in Friedenstahl. Interment at Greenridge Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.

SUSAN FRIESEN

Dec. 16, 1925 - Oct. 12, 2003

Peacefully, with family at her side, Susan Friesen of Rosenort, Man. died Sunday, Oct. 12, at Donwood Manor. She is survived by three sisters, Helen Friesen, Millie Reimer (Allen), and Laura Friesen (Ed); five brothers, Bill (Helen), Frank (Gertie), Len (Bertha), Art (Ruth), Elmer (MaryAnn); and 35 nieces and nephews.

Though we feel a sense of tremendous loss and sadness we are happy for her that she has been carried Home - to a place of peace and perfect health again. Her deep faith and trust in God has been her strength and comfort as she has walked through difficult times of failing health.

Susan has demonstrated her love and compassion for people as she worked for many years as a nurse on the polio ward at King George Hospital, also as director of care at the Rosenort Eventide Nursing Home. Upon retiring from nursing she followed her dream and founded the Christian "Book Nook" in Morris, Man., where she made many friends and each customer was special.

She loved the outdoors, planting flowers, admiring nature. She was also an accomplished seamstress, sewing many a wardrobe.

Susan was a gentle, kind and very generous person - always ready to help - giving of her time and resources - giving of herself. In spite of illness, she never complained.
We have many precious memories of her and will deeply miss our dear Susan, whom we respected and loved so much.

A special thank you to Donwood Manor staff, who gave her such tender care with hugs and kisses, loving her, treating her with dignity and respect.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, 2 p.m., at the Rosenort Fellowship Chapel, Rosenort, Man., with Pastor George Toews officiating. Viewing took place prior to the service. Donations in memory of Susan can be made to Donwood Manor, 165 Donwood Dr., Winnipeg, MB, R2G 0VP.
