ARMAND L. STE-MARIE
Suddenly at his home on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, Armand Ste-Marie passed away at the age of 65 years.
He is survived by his loving wife Georgette (née Johnson), daughters Rosanne (Stephane) Courcelles and Monique
Ste-Marie; his very dear granddaughters, Gabrièle and Dominike Courcelles, and Misty and Mélanie Ste-Marie; sister Cécile (Roger) Legal; sister-in-law Mary Ann; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and countless friends, and neighbors.
Armand was predeceased by an infant daughter Joanne, an infant son Roger, his father Adrien, his mother Wilhelmina, brothers Gabriel and Gérard, sister Mériza, and sister-in-law Marie.
He was born on Saturday, Nov. 12, 1938 in Ste Anne, Man., where he lived and farmed practically all his life.
Armand and Georgette's home was always open to family and friends; at mealtime, visitors invariably became welcome guests to share Armand and Georgette's generous table.
He enjoyed farming and loved his horses. Armand relished giving horse rides to children and adults alike in his attractively decorated wagon. Sufficient reward for him were the beaming smiles of his frolicking passengers. For many years, Armand and his immediate family hosted an annual Ste-Marie Family and Friends Reunion, attended by up to 200 people - and extraordinary gesture of sociability and generosity!
Viewing took place at 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, with Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. at the Ste Anne Roman Catholic Church, Ste Anne, Man., with Rev. Fr. René Chartier presiding. Interment of the cremated remains will follow in the Ste Anne Parish Cemetery at a later date.

SARAH (SALLY) COLLEEN DONALD
Knowing the love and support of her family, Sally Donald passed away peacefully at her home in Grandview, Man., Feb. 7, 2004, at the age of 73 years.
She was born June 25, 1930 at Grandview, to Horatio and Winifred (Dalgleish) Fisher. She received her education at Grandview. Dec. 5, 1947 at Grandview, she was united in marriage to Leslie Donald. Together they began raising a family in the Grandview District. In 1956 they moved to reside at Somerset, Man., and then in 1959 they moved to Steinbach, Man., where they lived for the next 22 years. While residing in Steinbach, Sally was employed with the Kindale Occupational Centre (Manitoba Association for Mentally Handicapped) for some 12 years. In 1981 they retired back to the Grandview District, and following her husband's passing she later moved to reside in the town of Grandview.
Sally's interests were many and varied. She enjoyed the time she spent reading, playing cards and doing handiwork, such as sewing, knitting and quilting. She had an avid interest in the outdoors, greatly enjoying the time she spent gardening and especially birdwatching. Unique in all her endeavors, Sally touched the hearts of everyone she knew and will be sadly missed.
She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Women's Institute, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Grandview Royal Canadian Legion, as well as a member of the Grandview United Church Women.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Leslie; daughter Colleen; and brothers, Roger Fisher and Larry Fisher.
Sally leaves to mourn her passing her children, Robert Donald and his wife Gayle of Grandview, Maureen and her husband Brian Schirmer of Brandon, Man., Murray Donald and his wife Sally of Portage la Prairie, Man., and Michele Donald of Brandon; grandchildren, Shannon and Sara Grexton, Laura and Richard Donald, Bridgette Schirmer, Lindsey, Coulter and James Donald, Lawrence and Sandra Champagne; and great-grandchild Renee Grexton. Also surviving are brothers, Jim Fisher of Grandview, Tom Fisher and his wife Cecile of Elkhorn, Man.; and sisters, Patsy and husband Bob Schallhorn of Elmira, Ont., and Sandra and her husband Pete Tarasenco of Winnipeg, Man.
In accordance with Sally's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1:30 p.m., in the Grandview United Church, Grandview. Peggy Barrows will officiate, with interment to follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sally's memory to Grandview Residential Services Inc., Box 307, Grandview, MB R0L 0Y0.

SUSAN WIEBE
Susan Wiebe passed away peacefully at Rest Haven Nursing Home, Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at the age of 81.
Mom was baptized on the confession of her faith on June 14, 1943. Oct. 14, 1943 she married John R. Wiebe. After they had lived at several different locations they decided to settle in Steinbach, Man. Mom worked at Bethesda Hospital for 20 years. When she retired she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and reading. These were her best times and she enjoyed this until her Alzheimer's no longer allowed her to do so.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband John, daughter Irma (Henry) Friesen, son Rick (Phyllis), and their children Roxane (Guy) Dowhy, Tara (fiancé Gus Durksen), Dale, Jolene and Daryl. She is also survived by brothers, Peter (Eva), Ed (Agatha), Henry (Margaret), George (Linda), Abe (Verda), Ben (Ann); and sisters, Anna (Bill) Friesen, Sarah Zacharias and Martha (Dave) Doerksen; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Anna Toews, sister Agatha in infancy, brother Jake, brother-in-law Erdman Zacharias and sister-in-law Ruth Toews.
The funeral service was held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, with Pastor Len Sawatzky officiating. Interment at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach.

IDA MAY DAUPHINAIS nee Knowles
Ida May Dauphinais, aged 77 years, beloved wife of Art Dauphinais of Ridgeville, Man., passed away Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 at the Morris General Hospital.
Besides her dear husband, she leaves to mourn her passing, her children, Raymond and Barb Knowles of Pilot Butte, Sask., Russell and Joan Knowles of Regina, Sask., Linda and Les Holloway of Woodlands, Man., Beverly and Clint Walters, Dora and Wayne Taylor, and Douglas and Peggy Dauphinais, all of Winnipeg, Man.; grandchildren, Theresa, Dean, Chris, Roxanne, Jackie, Claudette, Clint Jr., Terry, Desiree, Jacquelin, Tammy-Lynn, Shari, Charlene, Jeanette; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Alexa, Ethan, Cody, Arron, Taylon, Johnathan, Jo-Anne, Cree-Anne, Justin, Jasmine, Becky, Chris, Michael, Cheryl, Ashley, Alyssa, Riley, Montanna, Taylor, Kaylen, Nolen, Danielle, Taylor, Jazzmine, Emily, and Dominic. Ida was predeceased by her son, Larry Dauphinais; and grandchildren, Kathy and Darren.
The memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 9, 2003 at the Ridgeville Community Hall.

OLGA ANN MARGARET LOBUR SKRUMEDA
With great sorrow we announce, after a valiant struggle with cancer, Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at DeSalaberry District Health Centre, in her 56th year, the angels lifted the soul of Olga Ann Margaret to Eternal Rest in God's Heavenly Kingdom, in the presence of her cherished mother; loving husband, Reverend Father Michael; and friend Kuma Pauline; with the exceptional medical staff.
Olga, the only child of Ann (nee Andrusyk) and late William Lobur, commenced her earthly sojourn May 16, 1948 at the Vita Hospital with Dr. Dyck and was tenderly and lovingly served in her final moments by Dr. Marlie duPlessis.
Inspired by her parents, she was well nurtured and educated to develop a sincere appreciation and love of God, Christ's Church and her Ukrainian Cultural Heritage and service to humanity. Upon completion of her Teaching Degree and Bachelor of Arts, she dedicated almost a quarter century to the field of education in schools of Ridgeville, King George V (Winnipeg), Pipestone, Vita, Oak River, Sandy Lake, Rivers, Erickson, in Manitoba, and eventually Hamilton, Ont., during which time she served on various Educational Development Committees. She skillfully guided the children and youth, and with her expertise led many performances of drama, both English and Ukrainian including "MASH", "Zaswystaly Kozachenky", and others.
Her love working with the community included a career in real estate in Windsor, Ont., dedicating herself also to Teaching Ukrainian Language at St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral (Winnipeg) and principalship of William Sarchuk Ukrainian School (Hamilton). She was a wonderful worker with CYMK, where she met her future husband, Michael. She held an executive position with the Ukrainian Women's Association (Brandon), served as a Director of the Board of St. Vladimir Institute (Toronto), and worked endlessly in charitable fund-raising and organizational work in Hamilton, Brandon, and Windsor.
Of humble character, she was delicate, sensitive, unselfish, encouraging and supportive in fostering God's love and truths and meeting the needs of others before her own. She carried about her the air of class and humble pride. Her delightful experiences included a brief chat with Princess Anne during the Centennial Celebrations of the City of Brandon; Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the unveiling of SELO UKRAINA Dauphin, and various other dignitaries, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, and various political dignitaries.
She lovingly dedicated herself to support the work in Christ's Vineyard with her husband Very Reverend Michael Skrumeda in Parishes of Oakburn-Brandon District, Hamilton (St. Vladimir's Cathedral) Windsor (St. Vladimir's Cathedral), Winnipeg (St. Mary the Protectress Cathedral) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.
Our daughter, Dobrodijka Olga, wife, mother and grandmother, kuma, and friend shall be remembered for her love, humor, and precious moments shared.
Olga was predeceased by her father, William Lobur, in 1999. She is mourned by her mother Anne; husband, Very Reverend Father Michael Skrumeda; daughters, Laura, Maple Creek, Sask., who followed her mother's footsteps in the teaching career, and Tanya of Windsor, Ont.; and two beloved grandchildren, Michael and Hailey; with cousins and many loving friends.
Her earthly journey is now complete and we pray that her soul abide in blessedness, where there is neither pain nor suffering, in a place much more beautiful than can be thought of by the heart of man.

The Funeral Requiem were celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004 from the Holy Triinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, 1175 Main Street Winnipeg, Man., commencing at 9:30 a.m. Panakhyda (prayer service) were celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m., at Loewen Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, Man. Main celebrants of the service were His Eminence Archbishop John of Edmonton, His Eminence Archbishop Yurij of Toronto, assisted by the Clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Interment took place at the Cemetery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Nativity of St. Mary, Senkiw, Man., at 3 p.m.
Pallbearers guiding her to her final place of rest were Walter Sokoliuk, John Andrusyk, John Gawronsky, Peter Gawronsky, George Skrumeda, Lorne Shindak, and graced by the honorary pallbearers Dobrodijky (clergy wives) forming an Honor Guard.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude and fervent prayers for blessings of the Lord to the many wonderful individuals too numerous to mention, the many clergy, Sisters, nurses, paramedics, volunteers and friends, and various medical professionals who were there in the time of need and care.

HELEN DRIEDGER
It is with great sadness that we announce our mother's passing, May 23, 2004. Helen (Lenchen) Braun, was born Oct. 21, 1914, in Grigorievka, Ukraine, to Johann and Helene (Martens) Braun. The family emigrated to Canada in 1925 when mother was 10 years old. She was young enough to feel the excitement of the journey and old enough to sense the worry and anxiousness of her parents.
She was baptized into the Schoenfelder Gemeinde in Pigeon Lake in 1934 by Altester Johann Klassen. Her greatest joy at that time was teaching Sunday school. Our mother's dream was to become a nurse, but she was needed at home to help with the farm work. She helped her parents on the farm until she married Abraham Driedger in 1941. Our father was an entrepreneur and our mother was a confident participant in his ventures. Their most successful business was the Rainbow Inn, which later became Lou's Restaurant combined with a service station and bulk oil dealership in the town of Grunthal, Man.
After Dad passed away in 1980, Mom moved to Winnipeg, Man. to be near her children. Here she joined the First Mennonite Church and the Edelweiss Verein.
She loved being a grandmother and was known as "Oma" to all. She was very proud that she could drive her car until she was 85 and that she never had an accident. She enjoyed making regular visits to her relatives and acquaintances in hospitals and nursing homes. She was always an avid sports fan and maintained her enthusiasm even in her later years although very few people her age shared her interest.
She leaves to mourn, her son Herold and his wife Lorraine, daughter Melita and husband Dave Ennis; grandchildren, Laurie Driedger and Rick Bohna, Michelle Driedger and husband Jason Morrison, Janine Ennis and husband Trevor Ray, and John Ennis and Al-Lisa McKay; great-grandchildren, Sydney, Aidan, Matthew and Noah; sister Melita Klassen; sisters-in-law, Annie Braun, Erica Heinrichs, Helen Driedger, Agnes Warkentin, Helen Unger, Agatha Guenther, Anne Hildebrandt, Nettie Krahn, Elsie Martens; brother-in-law Peter Driedger and wife Alice; many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 28, 2004, 2 p.m., at the First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Avenue. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Helen (Chornoboy) Block, May 25, 2004, at the Grunthal Menno Home. She will be dearly missed by her family: daughter Sally (Bert) Chubey of Morden, Man., grandchildren Michael (Lisa) of Edmonton, Alta., Rob (Valerie), step-great-grandchildren, Jackie and Ryan Watson of Pickering, Ont., and granddaughter Catherine Chubey, Ottawa, Ont.; daughter Phyllis (Morris) Sokoliwki, grandsons, Kevin and Trevor of Coquitlam, B.C.; son Ken (Mary) Block of Carmel, Indiana, grandchildren Grant (Ann), great-grandchildren Brendan and Rachel, Indianapolis, Derek (Missy) and great-grandchildren Julia and Carson, Cincinnati, and Darren (Sky) Block, Indianapolis, U.S.A.
Helen was born Dec. 5, 1914 and was the second oldest of 10 children born to Andrew and Lena Chornoboy of Sarto, Man. In her youth, with what little spare time she had, she enjoyed singing in the community choir and thrived on taking part in community plays. She married Steve Block in 1934, and together they built a garage business in Grunthal, Man., where they resided for many years. In their retirement, they enjoyed spending over 20 winters in Mexico, until she suffered a debilitating stroke in 1999 and was confined to full care at the Grunthal Menno Home. We express our grateful thanks to all the wonderful staff that have nursed her through these years with such patience, love and compassion and who have extended that same love and compassion to the family.
This kind, gentle woman always put her husband and children first. She was always there for them, no matter what the situation, and was the backbone of our upbringing, instilling the values we will carry with us always.
She was predeceased by her husband Steve in 2000; her parents, Andrew and Lena Chornoboy; and eight brothers: Little Michael, Maurice, Ted, Bill, Mike, Eddie, Orest and Taras. She is survived by sister Emily (Peter Chernecki).
Prayers will be held at Loewen Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Man., Sunday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. and the funeral service will take place at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Sarto, Monday, May 31 at 10:30 a.m., with interment at Parish Cemetery.

Peacefully, May 24, 2004 at the Ste. Anne Hospital, Lionel passed away at the age of 71 years. He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Laurette (Comeau); his children, Brigitte (Marque Eggett), Guylaine (Jerry Pitura), Lynne (Louis-Guy Dicaire), Nuiok (Jeff Pitura) and Berne; his grandchildren, Michelle Eggett, Storm, Marty and Jim-Bob Pitura, Nuiok and Annie Dicaire and Eric Pitura. He is survived by his sisters, Hélène Arpin, Paulette (Jules) Lafond, Sr. Rolande Joyal s.m.j.m., Monique (Hart) Oldenburg; his brothers, Jean (Marie), Noël (Lori); numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m., followed by prayers. Funeral service will be held in Ste. MARTHA PENNER
(written by Martha herself)
I, Martha Penner, was born to George and Lena Bartel on Oct. 25, 1922 in Rosenhuff (now Riverside), about five miles northwest of the town of Morris, Man. Due to our parents upbringing I came to be a Christian in my younger years, but only later received the assurance of salvation through I John 1:9. I was baptized and accepted into the Kleingemeinde Church, now EMC, by Bishop Jacob B. Kroeker on June 30, 1940.
Upon Mother's encouragement, I did some housework in our neighbourhood. During the flood of 1950, being evacuated to Lowe Farm, Man., I helped my auntie get breakfast for the many people also having come there for refuge from the flood, plus the men who came in from working in the flood area. My parents and I were eventually taken to Kleefeld by dad's brother. Later I went to help out at the Steinbach Invalid Home.
In 1956, together with Justina Brandt, we went to Mexico, where a clinic had been opened by the Cornie Loewens. Then when my dad passed away in 1960 (I had come home for a furlough in late '59), I stayed home to be with my mother. During those years I worked at Eventide Home as a part-time nurse's aide.
In 1974 Abe C.L. Penner called me and asked me to join him in marriage. Since our church had burned down, Abe's brothers and sisters invited us to have our wedding in the Blumenort Church. It was July 20, 1974. Then I moved to Arborg, Man. His four children, Menno (now deceased) and Mary, Tina and Ronald, Gertie and Arnold, and Janice and Jerry, plus at that time 12 grandchildren, adopted me as mother and grandmother. Our married life was too short — in March of 1983 my dear husband passed away of a massive heart attack. After living in Arborg seven more years, I moved to Steinbach, Man., into the Parkview Apartments.
The family adds: Mother enjoyed relatively good health, except for her spleen condition. This affected her blood quite seriously, so the doctors performed spleen surgery about four years ago. She slowly recovered, but had previously been diagnosed with Polysithemia in 1976.
In spite of that, she was actively involved in the Sewing Circle, sewing up blanket tops for MCC, helping out at the Thrift Shop, making quilts for the children and grandchildren, and knitting baby caps and bootie sets for the hospital. She took great interest in her family, remembering each one with a birthday or anniversary card, almost to the last moment. Her interest in Missions, writing letters and praying for them, was a priority in her life. Also Bible studies and devotional time was taken seriously.
April 10 she was admitted into the Bethesda Hospital. After many tests she was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia. But she did not become depressed when the doctor told her she might have only a month to live. She was looking forward to meeting her Saviour and to be re-united with her husband. Martha passed away at Bethesda Hospital on May 21, 2004 at the age of 81.
She leaves to grieve her departure, her family: Mary Penner, Tina and Ronald Plett, Gertie and Arnold Brandt, Janice and Jerry Reimer, 27 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, one sister Helen and husband Ben Kroeker, one brother Jake and wife Tina Bartel, one sister-in-law Nettie Bartel, many nieces and nephews, and adoptive refugee family, friends and relatives. Her husband, Abe C. L. Penner, son Menno, her parents and one brother Abe predeceased her.
The funeral service was held at the Evangelical Mennonite Church in Steinbach, May 25. Interment in Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, Man.
Our loss is her gain.
