Katherine Plett

March 15, 1920-Jan. 29, 2006

Our mother, Katherine Plett, was born to Johann and Aganetha Koop at Kleefeld March 15, 1920. She passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus at 7:30 a.m., Jan. 29, 2006.

She leaves Rosalyn and Don Baltus, Leonard and Esther, Nettie and Mervin Penner, Gladys and Denver Penner, Harold and Barb and Tim and Faye. She also leaves brother Peter Koop and wife Elizabeth of Steinbach, brother George Koop of Nova Scotia, sisters Maria Koop and Helen Koop, both of Blumenort, brother Henry Koop and wife Shirley Koop of Dauphin, sister-in-law Margaret (Albert) of Winnipeg and sister-in-law Eleanor (Frank) of Fairford. Mom also leaves 34 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren who loved her dearly and many nephews and nieces.

Mom was predeceased in 1960 by her husband George. She was also predeceased by son Edgar and his wife Rose and brothers Jacob, Hans, Albert and Frank.

Shortly after her birth Mom’s family moved to Neuenlage, near Blumenort, where she attended school until she began working as housekeeper for a number of families in the area. It was in that capacity she first learned to cook.

Mom accepted Jesus as her Lord at age 17, served him all the days of her life and was a faithful member of every church she attended.

She married our father, George, a widower with five children (Edgar, Roslyn, Leonard, Nettie and Gladys) in 1944—two more children (Harold and Tim) were born over the next nine years. Mom, who got married when she was 23, believed she was called into this marriage by God.

Over the years she has lived with the family in Norquay, Saskatchewan, (where our father operated a lumber camp) Platahoff and St Catharines, Ontario, where we moved after our father had difficulties in business.

In the early 1970s she took training as a cook and worked in the kitchen of the Leonard Hotel in St Catharines and Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach. She has also served many people, including both family and friends, in her home.

She served her church through much hospitality. She also enjoyed quilting and had a hand in the making of quilts for donation to missions in Manitoba and abroad.

In November Mom was taken to hospital with severe stomach pains. She came through subsequent surgery well and stabilized, but about two weeks ago she entered a period of rapid decline in strength until entering a coma only about 36 hours before her passing.

She was a quiet woman of gentle manner, strong faith and deep inner strength. In her humility she blessed far more lives than she knew.

The family is grateful to staff and doctors at Bethesda Hospital and to her Pastor Stephen Down and his wife Jackie for the genuine love and care for her.

The life of our mother will be celebrated and her memory honored at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach Friday, Feb. 3, beginning at 11 a.m.

Donations in her memory can be made to Project LAMBS.
