Lorne Calvert was born in Moose Jaw in 1952. He was educated there and attended University in Regina (Economics) and Saskatoon (Theology). Ordained as a minister of the United Church of Canada in 1976. Mr. Calvert then served as Minister of Zion United Church in Moose Jaw from 1979 to 1986.

Lorne was first elected in 1986, and was re-elected in 1991 and 1995 as the Moose Jaw Wakamow constituency MLA. On September 29, 1992, Lorne Calvert was appointed to Cabinet as Associate Minister of Health and Minister Responsible for Wakamow Valley Authority. Mr. Calvert was also the Minister Responsible for SaskPower and SaskEnergy from September 1992, to January 1993. He has served as Deputy Chair of the Crown Corporations Committee and a member of the Standing Committee on the Environment.

Mr. Calvert was appointed Minister of Health on February 3, 1995 and then as Minister of Social Services, Minister Responsible for Seniors and the Public Service Commission on November 22, 1995.

Lorne and his wife, Betty, have two children.
