Minister of Transportation and Highways
Harry Lali was appointed Minister of Transportation and Highways in the British Columbia Government on February 18, 1998.
Mr. Lali was first elected as the New Democrat candidate in the constituency of Yale-Lillooet in the 1991 general election and then reelected in 1996. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Forests in June 1996.
Mr. Lali was born in Jullundur, Punjab, and currently lives in Merritt, B.C. He was educated at the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia, where he obtained a bachelor of arts degree in history and South Asian studies. He is the founder of the group which established a Chair of Punjabi and Sikh Studies at the University of British Columbia.
Prior to his election to the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Lali was an employment counsellor for the federally sponsored Merritt Outreach Program since 1986. He has also worked at MOSAIC in Vancouver. He spent 11 summers working in the sawmill industry, and three years as a retail business person.
Mr. Lali served two years as councilor for the City of Merritt. His other community involvements included membership in the Lions Club, Merritt Recreation Commission, and the Merritt Aquatic Facilities Committee.
He is married to Rani Lali. They have two children.
