Prior to his June 15, 1993 election to the Alberta Legislature, Murray was an independent businessman focused primarily on marketing, and domestic and international financial management.
Murray has an extensive background in business operations and ownership. His private sector experience includes ownership and co-ownership of a number of Alberta companies in both the energy and retail sectors.
Prior to his May 31, 1996 appointment as Minister of Labour, Murray served as Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. He was reappointed to the Labour portfolio on March 26, 1997, with additional responsibility for Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy. He is a member of two Standing Policy Committees -- Jobs and the Economy, and Financial Planning and Human Resources.
Murray has been active in a number of community organizations, including the Varsity Community Association, the Calgary Winter Club and the TUXIS Model Parliament Alumni. He has also served as past president of the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame Alberta Alumni.
Murray was born and raised in Red Deer, Alberta. He lives in Calgary, with his wife Barbara and their two daughters.
