CHIASSON, Leo "Dan" - 90, Grand Etang, Inverness Co., passed away April 9, 2000, in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Born in St. Joseph Du Moine, he was a son of the late Dan and Elise (Poirier) Chiasson. He was a member of St. Joseph' s Church, St. Joseph Du Moine. He worked in the coal mines in New Waterford for several years. Then he worked at building bridges for the Department of Highways for 29 years, almost province wide. He was a member of New Horizon Senior Citizen Club, St. Joseph Du Moine and a member of the KOC Council 3850, Cheticamp. Surviving are sons, Bernie (Elizabeth), Toronto; Eugene (Simone), Cheticamp; daughters, Bertha (Mrs. Wilfred Doucet), Grand Etang; Germaine (Mrs. Aurel Fiset), Grand Etang; brothers, Arthur (Lucy), New Waterford; Willie (Eleonore), St. Joseph Du Moine; stepbrother, Joseph (Yvonne), Waltham, Mass.; sisters, Lucy (Daniel Gallant), New Waterford; Roseanne Mason, New Waterford; stepsister, Josephine Taylor, Welland, Ont.; grandchildren, Mark, Kevin, Glen, Tina, Brenda, Sharlene; great-grandson, Brendon. He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine Deveau; stepmother, Elizabeth "Lizza"; brothers, Alex, Johnnie and stepbrother, Samuel; sister, Elizabeth and stepsister, Marie Jeanne Charron. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, in Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Wednesday, in St. Joseph' s Church, St. Joseph' s Du Moine. Cremation to follow. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, St. Joseph Du Moine. Donations to the Sacred Heart Hospital Charitable Foundation.

PROUSE, Nicholas John "Nick"
PROUSE, Nicholas John "Nick" - 51, Boutiliers Point, died April 8, 2000, in the New Halifax, Infirmary, QEII. He was a son of Hilda Kathleen (Cracknell) Prouse, Charlottetown and the late George J.B. "Bill" Prouse. Nick was born and raised in Toronto, received a degree in marine biology from University of Guelph and in 1971 moved to Nova Scotia. He was employed with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography on marine life. Nick was an avid naturalist who enjoyed canoeing, camping and wildlife, particularly frogs and turtles. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family and friends, especially at his cottage at Molega Lake. Nick was a loving husband and father. He will be sadly missed by family, brothers and friends. Nick is survived by his wife, Marie Kettle; daughter, Brigid; son, Brendan, both at home; brothers, Rodney, Perkinsfield, Ont.; Christopher (Margaret), Charlottetown; Martin (Erin), Ottawa. Visitation today 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Tantallon. Funeral Wednesday 11:30 a.m. in St. James Church, Boutiliers Point, Rev. Mark Marshall officiating. Interment in St. James Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society for research on esophageal cancer or a charity of choice.

SWANTEE, Levi Oscar
SWANTEE, Levi Oscar - 76, Pictou, passed away May 8, 2000, in the Northumberland Veterans Unit, Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital, Pictou. Born in Sunridge, Pictou Co., he was a son of the late Victor and Millie (Croft) Swantee. He was a welder by trade and spent most of his life in Pictou. During the Second World War, he served overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 16, Pictou for 30 years, the Overseas War Veterans Association, and the Fish & Game Association, being an avid hunter and fisherman all his life. Levi also enjoyed woodcarving, his vegetable garden and the fellowship of his friends. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Isabel MacIntosh; daughter, Carol, Woodbridge, Ont.; son, Paul (Theresa), Upper Lawrencetown, Halifax Co.; granddaughters, Nicole and Krystal Swantee; sister, Mildred Matheson, Pictou; brother, Allan, Poplar Hill. He was predeceased by brothers, Carl, Frank, Anthony and Jim; sisters, Hilda Kirwin, Alice MacLeod, Effie Parker, Viola Swantee; stepfather, George Stancombe. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, in McLaren Funeral Home Chapel, Pictou, Rev. Iona MacLean officiating. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or the Northumberland Veteran's Unit Comfort Fund.

JORDAN, Linus - 63, Concession, Digby Co., died May 8, 2000, at home. Born in Concession, he was a son of the late Harry and Helen (Saulnier) Jordan. Surviving are his wife, the former Rachel Comeau, Concession; son, James, Concession; daughters, Elaine Duffy, Saulnierville; Debbie LeBlanc, Concession; Andrea Gaudet, Church Point; brothers, Herbert, Concession; Thomas, Clark's Harbour; sisters, Adèlice LeBlanc, Celeste LeBlanc, Elsie Thibodeau, Anna Lombard, Concession; five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Tina in infancy; sister, Stella. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Meteghan Funeral Home. Funeral 10 a.m. today, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Concession, Rev. Clovis Chiasson officiating. Burial in parish cemetery. Donations to Canadian Cancer Society.

BURT, James Frederick - 88, Mulgrave, died May 8, 2000, in Saint Martha Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Boxey, Nfld., he was a son of the late Thomas and Phoebe Burt. He was a member of St. Andrews Church, Mulgrave and a member of Temple Lodge 57, Mulgrave for over 40 years. Surviving are his wife, the former Sara Martin; daughter, Hilda Drake, Mulgrave; sons, Cyril Burt, Mulgrave; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Susie Blagdon, Newfoundland; Vera Bruce, Sydney; Dora Rose, Newfoundland; brothers, George Burt, Sydney; Linus Burt, Ontario. He was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Rodgers, Rita Burt, May Rose, Bella Tibbetts; brothers, Marshal Burt, Samuel Burt, Larry Burt, Cyril Burt. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral 10 a.m. Thursday in Saint Andrews Church, Mulgrave, Archdeacon Peter MacRae officiating. Burial in Saint Andrews Cemetery. Donations to Mulgrave and Area Resting Place or to Temple Lodge 57, Mulgrave. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.F. Greene Funeral Services Limited, 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury.

WELLS (Tredget), Thelma Florence
WELLS (Tredget), Thelma Florence - Born May 20, 1919 in Shaunavon, Sask., passed away after a lengthy illness in Vancouver, B.C. She had been a resident of Halifax, for 30 years prior to moving to Vancouver in 1992. Thelma was predeceased by her brother, Eric; sister, Madeline. She will be sadly missed and always loved by Alex, her husband of 56 years, as well as by her son, Brian (Georgina); twin daughters, Lois McIsaac (Earl) and Lesley Edwards, all of Vancouver; as well as four grandchildren, Sean, Sarah, Haley and Samantha. Cremation has taken place. Private memorial service and interment on May 11. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or any charity.

CORKERY, John Dennis - 63, Dartmouth, died May 9, 2000, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Dartmouth, he was a son of the late William and Henrietta (Corns) Corkery. He served with Imperial Oil on the tankers for seven years. He sailed with the Coast Guard on the northern excursions. He also served with the Halifax and Dartmouth Marine Slips for over 30 years. Surviving are sisters, Anna Green, Eastern Passage; Catherine Blank, Dartmouth; Marion Hawke, Dartmouth; brothers, Joseph, Halifax; Lawrence, Dartmouth; Earl, Dartmouth; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, William in infancy. Memorial service 2 p.m. Thursday, in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, Rev. Gregory Agyeman officiating. Burial in St. Peters Cemetery, Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

MacTAVISH, Carmelita - 58, 47 Thompson Ave., Sydney River, died May 8, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Laura (Benoit) Hureau. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. She loved her walks and the regular dinner gatherings with family and friends. Surviving are her husband, W.E. Sonny; daughters, Terry Lynn LeVatte, Halifax; Kimberly Ann, Toronto; sisters, Mrs. Theresa MacQueen, Westmount; Jeanette Campbell, Hay River, N.W.T.; Mrs. Evelyn Callaghan, Sydney; Delores Martin, Dartmouth; Josephine Boone, Dartmouth; two granddaughters. She was predeceased by a brother in infancy. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. LORD, Margaret Eliz - 85, Kentville, Kings Co., died May 8, 2000, in the Valley View Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Fredericton, N.B., she was a daughter of the late G. and Cora E. Ross. Margaret worked as a secretary for the Nova Scotia Sanitarium in Kentville for many years until her retirement. Surviving are daughter, Judy (Dave) Young, Lower Sackville; grandson, Paul Young, Halifax; granddaughter, Lynn Young, Kamloops, B.C.; great-grandsons, Eric and Adam Young, Halifax; brother, Malcolm Ross; niece, Julie Ross, both of Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Lord. Visitation Thursday from 11-12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. until the time of her funeral service at 2 p.m., in H.C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, Kentville, Rev. Robert Billings officiating. Burial in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Family flowers only.

DURLING (Moors), Joyce Jeanette - 69, Coldbrook, Kings Co., died May 8, 2000, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, Kings Co., she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Hattie May (Day) Moors. She had worked at Evergreen Home For Special Care, Kentville, retiring after 18 years and had been a member of the Salvation Army. She enjoyed playing bingo. Surviving are son, Ronald, Somerset; daughter, Dianne Little, Coldbrook; sisters, Eileen Toner, Ontario; Florence Sheffield, Dorothy Bent, Kentville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Mac Durling; son, Richard; brothers, Archibald, Charles, George, Donald Moors; sister, Frances Moors. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, funeral 2 p.m. Friday, both in H.C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, Berwick, Rev. Dr. Freeman Fenerty and Rev. Judieth Saunders officiating. Burial in Cambridge Cemetery. SKINNER, Captain Burford M. Ret'd.
SKINNER, Captain Burford M. Ret'd. - 66, Blackett St., Glace Bay, passed away suddenly surrounded by family and friends following his son and new daughter-in-laws wedding in Hamilton, Ont., on May 6, 2000. Born in Glace Bay, Bert was the son of the late Burford and Blanche (Burke) Skinner. Following high school he was employed in 1952 to 1953 with T. Eaton Co. following which he served 31 years with the Royal Canadian Airforce Commissioned from the ranks. He served in Grostemquin France, Greenwood, Nova Scotia, Summerside, P.E.I.; Camp Borden, Ont., Ottawa, Ont., Shearwater. Following retirement he worked for Paramax, Montreal for two years before returning to Glace Bay in 1986 Bert has spent many enjoyable summers with his family in his most favorite spot in the world Mira Gut. Growing up in New Aberdeen, Bert taught Sunday school in Warden United Church and was active in the Boys Scouts. He was an avid swimmer and scuba diver, trained in Judo, he was active in boy's clubs teaching Judo for a number of years. He was an active member of the Salvation Army being involved in youth groups, mens' clubs and other project the most important of which he felt was being part of the Building Committee for the Dartmouth Citadel Salvation Army Corps 1968 to 1969. Mr. Skinner is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Mary (Foster); sons, Roy Foster, Oakville, Ont.; Brian Michael and his wife Katie, Oakville, Ont.; and his beloved granddaughters, Alexa and Madison who truly loved and adored him; brother, Michael (Anne); step-mother, Katherine Skinner; uncle, Eric (Doris) Skinner; aunts, Kay (Arthur) Peach and Daisey Skinner; brothers and sisters-in-laws as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his uncle, Richard Skinner. Visitation for Mr. Skinner will be held Thursday, May 11, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held on Friday, May 12 at 2 p.m., in the Salvation Army Citadel Union St., Glace Bay, Major Dinzel and Katherine Baggs officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, Glace Bay Highway. Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, The Gideons, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or any charity. Weeping may endure for a night, But joy cometh in the morning.

GOODWIN, James Anthony "The Goat" - 56, 235 Ghana Ave., New Glasgow, died in the Aberdeen Hospital, May 9, 2000. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late William and Sadie (Benoit) Goodwin. He was a former employee of Hawker Siddeley, retiring due to ill health. He is survived by his wife, the former Kay Hayman; sons, Stephen (Ann), New Glasgow; William (Lori), Riverton; John, Kingston, Ont.; Herbert (Lisa), New Glasgow; Mark, at home; daughters, Jenny, Sackville; Debbie (Larry) McMullin, Trenton; brothers, Collie, New Glasgow; Stephen, Ontario; Carl, Alex, Clayton, Sunset Haven; sisters, Lillian MacNeil, New Glasgow; Corrina (Frank) Good, Ontario; 14 grandchildren. He was predeceased by son, John; brother, John; six brothers in infancy. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, from where the funeral will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m., Rev. Bernard MacAdam officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Pictou County Diabetic Association.

Co., on May 9, 2000, in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. She was a daughter of the late John and Gertrude Zwicker, (Gold River). She is survived by daughters, Mavis (Richard) Thornhill, Frankford, Ont.; Linda (Stanley) Drake, Martins River; and sons Sydney (Shirley), Western Shore; John (Caroline), Greenwood; Lewis (Paulette), Martins River; Thomas (Elaine), Martins Point; and daughter-in-law, Sandra, Martins Point; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; brothers, Earl and Gary; sisters, Lena, Mae, Norma and Florence. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Frederick Sr.; son, Frank Frederick Jr. (Jackie) and sister, Blanche. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 12, in St. Mark's Anglican Church, Martins Point, Rev. Michael Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in the Western Shore Cemetery. Family Flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mahone Funeral Home, 32 Parish St., Mahone Bay.
