NAAS, Gladys Belle - 77, Lilydale, Lunenburg Co., died October 28, 1998, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born at Cross Island, Lunenburg Co., she was a daughter of the late Elekium and Emma (Smith) Whynacht. She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg. Surviving are her husband, George; daughter, Paulette (Mrs. David Fraser) Upper LaHave; son, Douglas, Lilydale; sister, Marjorie Daniels, Lunenburg; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Ray, Guy, Basil. No visitation by request. Private service for immediate family only Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Laurence Mawhinney officiating. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. In lieu of flowers, donations to Fishermen's Memorial Hospital or St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg.

DEDRICK, Mildred Irene - 81, Northwood Centre, Halifax, formerly of Churchover, Shelburne Co., died October 28, 1998, in the centre. Born in Upper Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Manus and Dora (Jones) Bower. She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, Churchover. Surviving are daughter, Louise (Mrs. Ted Johnson), Halifax; brothers, Phillip, Charlottetown; Gerald, Upper Ohio; Leslie, Shelburne; sisters, Janette Young, Queensland; Ora Slade, Halifax; grandchildren, Paul Johnson, New York; Jeffrey Johnson, Halifax; Michael Johnson, Germany. She was predeceased by her husband, James; son, Roger; brothers, Russell, Norman, Prince; sister, Eva. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Friday, funeral 11 a.m. Saturday, both in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Shelburne, Rev. Charles Bull officiating. Burial in the Church of the Resurrection Cemetery, Churchover. In lieu of flowers, donations to Northwood Care Inc., Halifax; Parkinsons Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Division or Canadian Cancer Society.

BENNETTS, Leslie Hector
BENNETTS, Leslie Hector - 76, Halifax, died October 28, 1998, in the VG Site, QEII, after a long battle with heart and kidney disease. Born in London, England, he was a son of Harry and Dorothy Bennetts. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was a transport pilot overseas during the Second World War. Afterwards, he retired from the Military until 1951 when he once again enlisted and converted from fixed wing flying to helicopters. He eventually became a helicopter instructor before retiring from the Air Force in 1967. After a five year stay in Victoria, B.C., Les joined the Canadian Coast Guard in Ottawa and was soon posted to Dartmouth where he continued to fly helicopters until his retirement in 1987. He was much loved and will be sadly missed by his longtime companion, Evelyn Greene; daughter, Carla Rose and husband Jim Warren, Milford Station; son, Mark, Langley, B.C.; extended family members in Victoria and many friends in Halifax. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Rev. Sandra Carruthers officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings Co. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

MacLEOD, Sheldon B.
MacLEOD, Sheldon B. - 54, Frasers Grant, Antigonish Co., died October 28, 1998, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Glace Bay, he was the adopted son of the late Charles and Flora (Smith) MacLeod. He was recently reunited with his natural siblings, the MacRury family of Whycocomagh. He was a carpenter, having worked with Rossi Construction and Maritime Form Works in Halifax for many years. He later formed his own company, MacLeod Construction. He was a member of the Carpenter's Union. He is survived by his former wife, Moira (Chisholm), Dartmouth; son, Charles, Arichat; daughter, Sarah, Dartmouth; granddaughter, Cayleigh; brother, Wilson (Lois), Dartmouth; sister, Erma Waters, Bramley, Ont. He was predeceased by brother, Angus. Visitation will be from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. A graveside service will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien, Rev. James Chisholm officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

PIERS, Judith Forbes
PIERS, Judith Forbes - 104, died October 22, 1998 in Northwood Manor, Halifax. She was a daughter of the late Temple L.E. and Ida Forbes Piers, Jubilee Road, Halifax. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Judith graduated from Dalhousie University with her BA in 1916. She was one of the oldest living female graduates at the time of her death. She started work at the Royal Bank in 1916 and six years later she joined Royal Securities for 19 years. In 1942 she started work at Canadian Mortgage and Housing, working on wartime housing, and remained there until her retirement in 1959. Judith was an active member of First Church of Christ Science, she served as reader and treasurer for many years. At the age of 92 she moved to Northwood Manor. Surviving are nephews, Derek Piers, Halifax; Jack and Robert Piers, Truro; David Piers, Summerside, P.E.I.; nieces, Ruth MacDonald, Toronto; Linda Piers-Stone, Peterborough, Ont.; Dora Hunt, Truro; a number of cousins. She was predeceased by brothers, George, John, Bevil. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service 2 p.m. Saturday in the Penthouse, Northwood Manor. No flowers. Donations to Northwood Foundation or any charity.

HILL, Norah Elizabeth
HILL, Norah Elizabeth - Halifax, died October 28, 1998, in Northwood Manor, where she had been a resident of the past five years. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter the late Frederick H. and Margaret (MacIsaac) Mitchell. She was a graduate of Saint Patrick's Girls High School. She was employed for some time with the Income Tax Department and worked for many years as office manager at Zellers Ltd. from where she retired. Surviving are sister, Mary Eileen Mitchell; brother, Francis, both of Bedford. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Carson Hill; brothers, Thomas H., Frederick A. J. There will be no visitation. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday in St. Ignatius Church, Bedford, Rev. Albert Cosgrove officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, Bedford.

LANGILLE, Lomer Thomas Arthur - 77, Fauxburg, Lunenburg Co., died October 28, 1998, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Fauxburg, he was a son of the late Arthur Harold and Ida Marie (Veinot) Langille. He worked for many years with Irving Oil Co. Ltd. as a truck driver and later with Bailly's Fuels Ltd., Lunenburg, retiring in 1986. Surviving are his wife, the former Frances Lorraine Barteaux; son, Kerry, Calgary; foster sons, David, Lunenburg; Morton, at home; sisters, Jean (Mrs. Hugh Knickle), Fauxburg; Pauline (Mrs. Lloyd Lillis), Second Peninsula; brothers, Alfred, Bridgewater; Harold, Lunenburg. He was predeceased by brother, Earl. Graveside committal service 1 p.m. Saturday in Northwest Cemetery, Northwest, Rev. Robyn Brown-Hewitt officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to any charity. Arrangements entrusted to Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg.

BURKE, Lloyd Joseph - 85, Weymouth, Digby Co., died October 28, 1998, in Digby General Hospital. Born in Weymouth, he was a son of the late Andrew and Laura (Cunningham) Burke. He served overseas during the Second World War and was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 67, Weymouth. He was a salesman for Jones Bottling Co. for 20 years. He was also a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Weymouth. Surviving are his wife, the former Daphne Streader; daughters, Susan (Mrs. Phillip Lombard), Corberrie, Digby Co.; Kathleen (Mrs. Ken Babin), Sackville, N.B.; sons, Andrew, Belleville, Ont.; David, Guelph, Ont.; six grandchildren; a great-grandson. He was predeceased by daughter, Jean; brothers, Cleveland, Irving; sisters, Noreen, Marie, Roma. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Friday, legion service 7:30 p.m. Friday, both in Jayne's Funeral Home, Weymouth North. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Weymouth, Rev. John MacPherson officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations to The Lung Association.

ISRAEL, Dorothy - Montreal, died Tuesday, October 20, 1998. Beloved wife of the late Mandy Israel; devoted mother of Howard, Terry (Helen), Barry, Mona (Marcy) and Murray; cherished grandmother of David, Paul, Mandee, Michael and Martin; dear sister and sister-in-law of Harry and Gertrude Israel, and Ted Blumenthal. Funeral service was held October 22 in Montreal. Burial in the Hebrew cemetery, De La Savane. Donations may be made in her memory to Canadian Ort or Beth Israel Synagogue, 1480 Oxford St., Halifax.

BYRNE, Margaret Marie
BYRNE, Margaret Marie - Passed away Tuesday, October 27, 1998, after a short battle with cancer, at home surrounded by her family. Born in Stonehurst, Lunenburg Co., she was a daughter of the late Alston Lewis Knickle and Dorothy (Knickle-Ritcey), Halifax. Margaret was employed at the Victoria General Hospital for 10 years. She also worked for Carlton Cards and sold Avon for over 30 years. Upon leaving Carlton Cards she stayed home to take care of her family. She had been an active volunteer for the Halifax Skating Club for 13 years. She is survived by her husband, David, Halifax; "sister" and niece, Vicki, Halifax; brother, Donald and sister-in-law Paula, Trenton, Ont.; nieces, Ashley and Amanda, Trenton, Ont. and various aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her loving stepfather, Elvin and sister, Sylvia. After resting at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, today, October 29, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m., she will rest at Central United Church, Lunenburg, from 1:30 p.m. until service time at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Rev. Robyn Brown-Hewitt officiating, assisted by Rev. Robert Zinck. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of choice.

GRANGER, Winifred K.
GRANGER, Winifred K. - 5885 Spring Garden Rd., Halifax, died October 27, 1998. Born in Sussex, England, she was a daughter of the late Edwin and Charlotte (Ling) Granger. Educated in Halifax, she graduated from the Halifax Business College in 1930. She was a member of the Department of Education for over 30 years, retiring in 1975. For many years, she was an active member of the ACW at Cathedral Church of All Saints. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cathedral Church of All Saints, Tower Road, Halifax.

LEE, Victor
LEE, Victor - Formerly of Halifax, peacefully at General Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on Thursday, October 22, 1998, at the age of 53 years. Loving husband and best friend of Mary. Special father of Ian and Kathryn. Dear brother of Molly, Susie, Dorothy, Joseph, Mary, Nellie, Harold, Rose and Ethel. Brother-in-law of Ralph, Karol, Ed, Ben, Lorraine, Glenn, Ted, Doris, Richard, Helen, Betty, Ida, Agnes and the late Gin. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Jennie Lee; stepmother, Mae Su Lee. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A private family funeral was held in Toronto, October 26. Interment in York Cemetery, Toronto. Memorial contributions to Canadian Diabetes Association or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home, Sault Ste. Marie.

GILES, Arthur F. (Paddy)
GILES, Arthur F. (Paddy) - 51, Bedford, died Tuesday, October 27, 1998, peacefully at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of C. Earl and Sophie (Novak) Giles, Pomquet, Antigonish Co. After attending Sydney Stephen High School, he became certified in the field of orthotics and prothestics. He practiced in Nova Scotia, Vietnam, Quebec and Saskatchewan, returning to Halifax in 1981 to continue in his field in public and private practice. Failing health led to early retirement. He is survived by his wife, the former Pauline Boyle, Bedford; son, Andrew, Bedford; brother, Clifford and wife Jean, Shubenacadie; sister, Faith and husband David Kendrick, Trail, B.C.; Jane Templeton, Dartmouth; Gail, Halifax; several nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation or service. Cremation will take place under the direction of Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of one's choice.
