MASON (MacKenzie), Elizabeth
Dartmouth and Kamloops, B.C., passed away in the Marjorie Snowden Willoughby Hospice Home on February 14, 2009, following a considerable struggle with cancer. She served as the Executive Director of WET-NS where she was instrumental in the development and implementation of National Policy and training regimens for wood burning appliances. She spearheaded many legislative changes with respect to the wood-heating industry. She was well- known all over Canada for her involvement in WETT Inc., and CSA. She owned her own hearth, product store in Dartmouth as well as working as an accountant for many small businesses. She will be remembered as a caring, social and loving person and also a fabulous cook and seamstress. Elizabeth was an active member of the Stairs Memorial United Church of Dartmouth for many years; served on the Board, was a life member of the UCW and held many positions within the church and UCW. She is survived by her father, Alex MacKenzie, Glace Bay; son, John MacKay, Vernon, B.C.; sister, Ethel Loveall, Halifax, and brothers, Sandy, Port Hawkesbury; Fred (Joyce) and Fultz (Joanne), Halifax; uncles, Fultz, Halifax; Freeman, Prince Edward Island; Phillip, Sydney, and Aunt Elsa, as well as nieces, Marisa, Alison, Shelly, Tanya, Jennifer, and nephew, Alex.; grandnieces and nephews include, Victoria, Rebecca, Isaac, Benjamin, and Megan, and Daniel. She was predeceased by her mother, Beulah Myrtle (Bagnell) MacKenzie; her first husband, Ken McKay; her husband, Emmett Mason, and brother, Ken. A memorial service will be held in Stairs Memorial United in Dartmouth during the month of May. A notice will be posted when arrangements are confirmed. SAMSON, Mary P. "Rose"
90, L'Ardoise, passed away suddenly on Monday, March 9, 2009, at home. Born in L'Ardoise, she was a daughter of the late Pascal and Jane (Martell) Samson. A quiet and private individual, Rose's life was dedicated to her family. She assisted in the running of the family business known as: "Pascal's Store" and was very supportive to the needs of her four brothers who shared the family homestead with her. Rose was a person of deep faith and had a special devotion to St. Anne. For 40 years, she made an annual pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Anne du beaupré. She is survived by a sister, Mary Doe, Mississauga, Ont.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Mae Kawuza, Delia Rogers, Irene Gaudet, Emma Martell and Emeline Peters; brothers, Wallace, Gordon, Clarence, Gerald and Leo. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass for the late Rose Samson will be Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Church with Rev. Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. O'BRIEN, Harry
Riverview, N.B., passed away in The Moncton Hospital on Tuesday, March 10, 2009. Born in Wolfville, he was the son of the Harry W. and Margaret Alma (Russell) O'Brien. He is survived by his wife, Muriel W.; daughters, Shelly O'Brien (Mervyn Hann), Ottawa and Shuan MacDonald (Scott), Riverview; three grandchildren; cousin, Ann Billy, Ajax, Ont.; the Russell Family of New Ross and Halifax, and by the Dowell and O'Brien Families. Besides his parents he was predeceased by three infant children. The family will be receiving relatives and friends at the Riverview Lions Community Center, 701 Coverdale Rd. Riverview, N.B. on Saturday, March 14, from 2-4 p.m. for a celebration of life and sharing memories. Graveside and committal will be in Elmgrove Cemetery, Steam Mills at a later date. TRETHEWEY, Harry LeRoy
76, New Germany, Lunenburg Co., passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, with his daughter and granddaughter by his side. Born in New Germany, he was a son of the late Leslie and Bernice Trethewey. Harry was a member of IOOF Maple Lodge, New Germany and prior to his illness, he was a woodworker, spending much of his time in his workshop. Surviving are his wife, Pearl Florence (Bruhm); daughter, Edith (Kevin) Himmelman, Chelsea; sons, Gregory (Donna), Pinehurst; Bruce (Solange), Moncton, N.B.; grandchildren, Jordan, Adam, Matthew, Justin, Alexander, Jake, William and Leslie; great-grandchildren, Desirae and Ethan; sister, Maxine (Charles) Musgrove, Dartmouth; brother, Horton (Lorna), Sackville; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Clyde Arthur Trethewey. There will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. Interment will be at a later date. No flowers by request. DOYLE, Annie Marguerite
92, Erinville/Antigonish, died March 10, 2009, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in Erinville, Guysborough Co., on July 26, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Johanna (MacDonald) Kelly. Annie attended school in Erinville, went on to graduate from Nova Scotia Normal College, Truro in 1935 and later furthered her education at Dalhousie University. Following graduation she taught in one room schools in Guysborough Co., including Fisherman's Harbour, Port Bickerton and Country Harbour. The people of that area always held a very special place in her heart. In later years she taught in the one room school in Erinville and then Chedabucto Elementary in Guysborough. She never forgot her students and continued to be interested in their lives. After retirement she coordinated a grandparents-in-the-classroom program at Chedabucto Elementary. Annie was committed to her faith and was a tireless worker for her church and community. She was President of St. Thomas' Ladies Aid for many years and spearheaded numerous fund raising projects for the church, cemetery and community. She was a lector at St. Thomas Church and taught religion in her home into her late 80's. She enjoyed organizing events especially her ladies and men's card plays and social evenings in aid of Guysborough Memorial Hospital. She was a contributor to the Guysborough Journal until the age of 92, and was a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society. She loved being around people. She was happiest when organizing and socializing, putting on and performing in skits, playing cards and cribbage. She was a generous and good mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and friend. She never forgot old friends and enjoyed meeting new people. When she could no longer maintain her home in Erinville, she moved to Antigonish where she enjoyed many new friendships. She will be greatly missed by daughters, Juanita (Ralph) Courtnage, Moose Jaw, Sask.; Joanne (Chuck) Curry, Antigonish; son, Ronnie (Wanda) Doyle, Erinville; daughter-in-law, Laura Doyle (Myles MacPherson), Erinville; sister, Rose Doyle, Erinville; grandchildren, Todd, Ryan and Darren Courtnage, Patrick, Rosemary and Tom Curry, Melissa Skinner, Michael and Tim Doyle, Amy Wright, Darrell, Marylou, Craig and Emily Doyle; great-grandchildren: Kaylah, Chlo‘, Kael and Austin. She was predeceased by husband, Clarence; sons, Tommy and Lloyd; sister, Mary Farrell. Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7 -9 p.m .on Friday. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Thomas Church, Salmon River on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jonathan Nweke and Rev. Allan MacPhie presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. CONRAD, Capt. Anson B.
82, Broad Cove. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Captain Anson Conrad in Mahone Bay Nursing Home, Mahone Bay, on March 10, 2009. Born in Broad Cove, he was a son of the late William and Blanche (Brown) Conrad. Anson trained in the army for the Second World War. He had a 44 year (27 years as captain) career of fishing starting at the age of 19 on schooners fishing the Grand Banks. He rose through the ranks at National Sea, winning many awards including the coveted award as top producing Captain in the fleet, Captain Highliner. He retired in 1988 and enjoyed his retirement years working on his wood lot and tending his gardens and property in Broad Cove. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24 in Bridgewater, as well as being an active member of St. Mark's Anglican Church and the Broad Cove Community Hall. He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley (Rolffe); son, Bernard (Elizabeth), Broad Cove; daughter, Margo (Gary), Truro; grandchildren, Elsa and Nathan Conrad; stepgrandson, Derek Andersen; sister, Leah Boutilier. He was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held today from 7-9 p.m. with a public legion tribute service being held at 7 p.m., both in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mark's Anglican Church, Broad Cove, Rev. David Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Canadee Cemetery, Broad Cove. No flowers by request. Whitney Pier, died March 9, 2009. Born in Whitney Pier, she was a daughter of the late David and Margaret (Hayes) Piercey. ROMO, Donald Joseph
80, died suddenly at home in Grand Desert, March 10, 2009. Born in Woodside, to the late Clement and Elsie Romo, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Electrician by trade, he worked in the oil fields for 30 years. Donnie was an active member in his church community and Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley (LaPierre); children, Dale Tibbo (Bryan), Donnie (Darlene), David, Darren (Delena), Darlene Doucette (Vernon), Danny (Lorraine), and son-in-law, David MacLean; beloved grampy to his grandchildren, Michelle, Bryan, Trisha, Trudy, Patrick, Gillian, Chantelle, Trevor, Devon, Rebecca, Katie, Jessica, and Colton. He also leaves behind sisters, Eileen, Viv, Gertie, Jean, Diane, and brother, Reg. He was predeceased by daughter, Donna MacLean. 84, Elderbank, passed away March 9, 2009, in Elderbank. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. MORRIS, William Neil "Billy"
57, of Waterville, Kings Co., passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009, in Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre, Waterville. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Donald F. and Mary F. (MacNeil) Morris. He had been a resident of Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre for over 30 years and the family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the management and staff of the centre for their care, kindness and compassion and for being Billy's extended family. The family also wishes to acknowledge the nurses, doctors and staff of Valley Regional Hospital with special recognition to Dr. Heisler and staff for their care and attention over the years. Billy is survived by sisters, Pamela "Pam" Morris, Halifax, and Janice (Andrew) Fisher, Belmont, Hants Co.; brother, James "Jim" (Mary), Dartmouth; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and friends. 85, Digby, passed away March 9, 2009, with her family by her side. She was a daughter of the late Capt. Hillyard and Seraph Barnes. Vi was a lifetime member of Digby Baptist Church where she served as deacon for three years, and P.N.G. of the Zelma Rebekah Lodge. She was also a member of the Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 20, Digby, past president and secretary of the Digby Bowling Club and secretary for a number of years for the Tideview Terrace Auxiliary, and a member of the Tuesday Nite Bridge Club. She is survived by daughters, Eleanor (Hugh), Mary Ellen (Larry); son, Michael (Janice); son-in-law, Larry Carter; grandchildren, Wendy, Kenny, Amber, Ashley, Aaron, Katie and Freddy; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Justin, Ryan, Carter, Dylan, Cameron andSarah. She was predeceased by husband, Capt. Harry Burnham; daughter, Linda Carter; sisters, Muriel Banks and Louise Shaw; brothers, Marty and Eddie. Surviving are his wife, Joyce (Walls); daughter, Jennifer, Burnaby, B.C.; son, Josh, Surrey, B.C.; grandson, Alexander; brothers, Eli, Harold, Walter and Cecil; sisters, Pauline, Imelda, Patricia and Linda. HARRISON, Marie
Age 80 of Amherst, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, March 9, 2009, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Bavily and Elizabeth (Bryenton) White. In her working career, she was employed with Waldale Ltd. from where she retired as manager of the Record Department and later worked as a blueberry contractor for Hoeg Bros. Marie enjoyed bingo, crib, painting, gardening and had a special place in her heart for animals, especially her beloved cat, Velcro. She was a member of Immanuel United Church, Amherst, where she was involved with the UCW. Marie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Linda (Aldo) Angelini of LaSalle, Que.; Bill (Lynn) Harrison of Winnipeg, Man.; Beverly (Glen) Knowlton of Advocate; Bob (Ann) Harrison of Williamsdale; Viola Harrison of Middle Sackville; and Mark (Vicki) Harrison of Amherst; sister, Viola Kastel of Mount Whatley, N.B.; grandchildren, Lee, Lise, Kristen, Steven, Joey, Jeremy, Mitzie, Jeremy, Lyndsey, and Michael; great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph (1974); daughter in infancy, Joanne; brothers, Frederick and Bavily Jr.; and sister, Mae White. Cremation has taken place under the care of Campbell's Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906). A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 15, at 4 p.m. from Immanuel United Church, Amherst, with Rev. Lloyd Bruce officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Amherst Cemetery.
