Rev. Isaac, B.A. L.Th Butler

BUTLER, Rev. Isaac, B.A. L.Th. - 95, Halifax, passed away October 15, 2002, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in Greeleytown-Foxtrap, Conception Bay, Nfld., October 11, 1907, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary Jane (Dawe) Butler.

He was a teacher for three years before deciding to enter the ministry. As an ordained priest, he served in parishes in Newfoundland (Twillingate, Fogo, Brigus-Salmon Cove, Bay St. George, Bay Roberts), and Nova Scotia (Mulgrave, Bible Hill, Digby-Weymouth, Westphal). He attended Bishop Feild College, St. John's, before graduating from Queen's Theological College, St. John's and Durham University, Durham, England.

Throughout his ministry he used the Bible his friends had given him before leaving for Liverpool, England on the SS Nova Scotia in 1936. He met and married his devoted wife, June "Julia" Earle, in the parish of Fogo, Nfld., where she was the organist of St. Andrew's Church. In 1999, St. John's Anglican Church, Westphal, honoured him on the 65th anniversary of his ordination. In days when roads were few and far between in Newfoundland, he carried out his ministry in widespread parishes by traveling on horse and sled, snowshoes, motorboats and dories, walking long distances, biking, by speeder (a small hand-propelled train car) and train. At various times during his ministry he filled many roles ranging from medical advisor in isolated outports to chairing school boards.

In the latter role he was instrumental in the building of a consolidated high school on high ground near Bay Roberts, Nfld., appropriately called Ascension Collegiate. His secret for a long and happy life was to walk every day, not only physically but also spiritually. He was ordained priest at St. John the Baptist Cathedral in St. John's, Nfld., by Bishop White in 1934.

He was predeceased by brother, Charles; sisters, Rebecca and Jessie.

Besides his loving wife of 62 years, he is survived by daughters, Margaret (Ken) Mackenzie, Salt Spring Island, B.C.; Barbara, Halifax; sons, Bernard (Robina), Dartmouth; Geoffrey (Judi), Granville Ferry; sadly missed by grandchildren, Erica and Stephen, Elena and Andrew, Bill and David, Tegan, Kirsten, Leah and Sean; by great-grandchildren, Kendra, Matthew, Ryan; nieces and nephews, Ruby LeDrew, Ray (Dot) Bishop, Bert (Doris) Bishop of Kelligrews, Nfld.; Daphne (Austin) Earle, St. John's; Dallas Buxbaum, Hallandale, Fla.
