Senior Counsel, Industry Canada Department of Justice BCL LLB Finally at rest after a long illness, on Friday, January 31, 2003, in Ottawa, at the age of 53. His beloved wife, Janice M. Rochefort at his side. Loving father of Meghan Jenna Miller. Cherished brother of Marilyn Miller (Irving) Gimple and Fay Miller of Montreal. Only son of the late Joseph Mazer Miller and Sarah (nee Lipstein) Miller also of Montreal. Fondly remembered by Rhona Einbinder-Miller, mother of Meghan. Dear son-in-law and friend of Marie-Claire Cauchy and extended family members Trevor and Sylvie (Rochefort) Makara. Irving will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends and work colleagues from across Canada and the United States. Mr. Irving Miller studied Law at McGill University in Montreal, receiving his BCL in 1974 and his LLB in 1975. He passed the Quebec Bar in 1976 and became a member of the Ontario Bar in 1978. That same year he moved to Ottawa where he held positions with FIRA (Foreign Investment Review Agency) and Excise Legal Services. As Senior Counsel in the Department of Justice, he was seconded as Coordinator to the Trade and Corporate Law Group for Industry Canada, Legal Services. In this capacity, he worked on the Agreement on Internal Trade. He also counseled with the Trade Negotiations Office on the Free Trade Agreement and NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). Most recently, The Ethics Commission was among many other Justice organizations that benefited from his expertise and good-natured presence. Irving was known to all who loved him as an avid bibliophile, an enthusiastic baseball, hockey and sports fan. He was a loving and attentive father to Meghan and an affectionate spouse to Janice. His family and many friends will sorely miss his prodigious wit and dry sense of humour. Irving was loved and admired by his work colleagues for his gentle nature. He was considered, in the words of his peers, a humourist, a moderator and the spirit of the office. In Ottawa on Friday, February 7, 20033, aged 59. David was the loving and much-loved father of Susan and Michael, husband of Elizabeth ( née St. Paër ), brother of Linda ( Jon Baxter ), and son of Mary and the late Julius Shore. Born in Vancouver, he studied English literature at the University of British Columbia and at the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham. After teaching at the University of Tel-Aviv and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he joined the Department of English at the University of Ottawa where he taught for 25 years. Friends, colleagues, students and especially his family will miss him sadly, and will gratefully remember his fine intelligence, pleasure in friendship, and sense of homour. Thanks to all those whose support helped David to face illness with grace, strength and patience. A private interment at Beechwood cemetery will be followed by a memorial service at the University of Ottawa ( date to be announced ). Peacefully on January 31, 2003 at the Perley-Rideau Veterans Health Centre in his 91st year. Loving husband of Betty (nee Ridout). Father of David (Charlotte) of Ottawa, Dyann Gray (Chuck) of Denver. Grandfather of Braunwyn, Courtney and David William. A graduate of the Western, Queens and Toronto Universities, his lifetime was dedicated to educating. Born in Stratford, Ontario, brother of David Simpson, Mayor of Stratford, one of his first educational tasks was to ensure his entrepreneurial brother understood the educational significance of William Shakespeare so that he would sponsor the proposed festival for their hometown. From his first teaching assignment during the depression in Savant Lake, north of Superior in a one room school house teaching grades 1 to 13 through progressive promotions to principal, public school inspector and leadership positions, helping to build Ontario's great public education system in the 50's and 60's, to supervisor of DND schools in Europe ending with Directorships of Indian and Northern Education for the Federal Government, he never forgot his base. His innovative approaches, pragmatism, undaunted drive and concern for accessibility and equality were hallmarks of his career. A pioneer of Canada Student Loans, Cooperative Education, Comprehensive Schools, Local Control for Indian bands and international cooperation through Circumpolar Conferences were some of the achievements that led to his induction as a lifetime member of the Canadian Education Association. His northern base included hockey, both playing and coaching in small town northern communities where his teams won championships and two of his NHL players were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He interrupted his educational career concerned about incursions by Hitler and chose to fight for liberty as an older volunteer enlistee during WW II. He topped his navigation class but chose active duty over a teaching/training role. Flight Lieutenant Simpson flew 33 perilous missions over Nazi Germany winning several medals and citations (chronicled in several publications) for bravery and courage including a DFC for the famed Duisberg mission. On retirement he traveled much of the world he hadn't seen while dedicating his time at home to community spirited activities in Ottawa including being chairman of the Council on Aging, and the Senior Citizens Council, a patron of the Ottawa Symphony and Opera Lyra and an elder of Rideau Park United Church not forgetting to keep fit by skating on the Rideau Canal in the winter, and biking on the parkways in summer. Singing in the CBC Senior Citizens production entitled, "You Gotta Have Heart" epitomized his lifetime attitude. Just prior to succumbing to Alzheimer's in his 85th year he completed an interesting 143-page autobiography chronicling his days in education, war and pride in his family for reference for future generations. His good attitude and sense of humour in battling this degenerative disease and adapting to his new reality at each stage of this progressive disease demonstrate that quality of life can be maintained to the end. Special thanks to staff at Rothwell and Perley-Rideau R2S who made this uncharted voyage so doable and rewarding. passed away at the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre on February 2, 2003. Beloved husband of Lillian Smith (nee Johnston). Loving father of Kimberley Woodman (Stan) of Wolfe Island, Ontario. Bob was born in Whitby Ontario November 27, 1923, the eldest son of Ernest (deceased) and Winnifred Smith. He is also survived by his mother and a brother Ray F. Smith (Bette) of Burks Falls, Ontario and several nieces and nephews. Bob joined the army in 1943. He served time in England and the Netherlands and returned to Canada in 1945 and attended the University of Toronto. Upon graduation he re-enlisted in the air force and spent one year at Aeronautical Engineering School in Aylmer, Ontario. His military career spanned 24 years at various postings in Canada, United States and Europe. After his military career he joined the Department of Supply Services and retired in 1989. Bob was an avid hockey player, curler and golfer. He was a great lover of animals and served on the Board of Directors at the Ottawa-Carleton Humane Society. Bob was also a loyal member of the Nepean Kiwanis Club. The family wishes to thank Doctors Tobin and Bishop and the wonderful, caring staff at the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre. Suzanne St-Jacques
Born on April 20, 1956 in Timmins, Ontario. Angels and unicorns came to take Suzanne on Wednesday, January 29, 2003. She battled her illness heroically to the very end and then graciously let go to hold hands with the loved ones above. As she sits on the rainbow with her unicorns looking down upon us she is in peace with no more pain and suffering. Suzanne was predeceased by her dad Rémi. Suzanne leaves to cherish her memory her loving family: Mom Noëlla; brothers Richard (Sandra), Michel (Priscilla of Timmins), Gatëan, André, Roch (Francine)and her only loving sister Lynn (Jacques) all of Gatineau. Suzanne leaves behind her adorable nieces and nephews: Jennifer, Jonathan, Eric, Ashley, Nicolas, Jacob and Mélissa, her good friend Pete plus numerous aunts and uncle, cousins and many dear friends. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
