Violet Irene Metcalfe (nee Wadman)

April 19, 1933 - January 21, 2004

After 70 years spent laughing, working, traveling the world, watching sunsets, loving, reading, being curious, trying to be the best friend, wife and love that she could, and beloved slave to her toy poodle, Luiggi, Violet Irene Metcalfe drifted off to her eternal home on Wednesday, January 21, 2004, without pain, lucid till the last moments in the arms of her beloved husband, Jack.

She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 48 years; brother Victor J. Wadman (Vera); stepsister Emily Thomas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Richard and Lois Grant; and many favourite nieces, nephews and their children.

She is predeceased by her mother and father, Charles and Florence Anna adman; brother Charles W. Wadman (Selby); sisters Doreen F. Henderson (Dingwall), Elsie G. Wadman; stepbrothers George Brabrooke (Gertrude), Alfred Brabrooke (Edith); and brother-in-law Jack Thomas.

She had a wonderful circle of friends in Regina and across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and North Western Ontario as well as two special and dear friends, Irene Brown and Gladys Dowgray in Kenora where she and Jack spent many summers at the cottage.

She was a graduate of the University Extension program in Business Administration, many classes in Computer Science, Supervision, Statistics and SIAST classes. She was a member of the Board of Curriculum Consultants for the Saskatchewan Institute of Arts and Sciences (SIAST) for several years.

In 1995, she retired after 28 years with the Provincial Government, having served as Research Officer 1, Prescription Drug Plan and most recently as Supervisor, Health Insurance Registration.

She will be missed by her many colleagues in craft classes over the years. She loved gardening and creating flower arrangements as well as needlework and sewing.

Flowers gratefully declined. Donations, if desired, may be made to Pasqua Hospital Palliative Care Unit 3A, 4101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina S4T 1A5.

Earl Laplante

It is with great sadness that the family of Earl W. Laplante announce his passing after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, February 9, 2004. His loving wife was at his side.

Earl was born on June 14, 1937 in Timmins, Ontario.

Earl was predeceased by his mother Simone Laplante in 1973, father-in-law George Gauld in 1983, son-in-law Michael Pavey in 2001, and childhood friend Lennard Wallin in 2003.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 24 years Ellen (nee Gauld), son Robert, daughters Kimberly Pavey, Ellen (Gary) Rumpel, Tammy (Bob) Bruce, and Denise (fiance Jason Tait), all of Kenora. He also leaves his most precious grandchildren Lauren and Joseph Laplante, Mike and Megan Pavey, Gary and Elizabeth Rumpel, Robyn Bruce, Candice Markham, and Jared Edlund.

He is also survived by his sister Eileen (Kelly) Finnson, good friend Doug Wilcox and his family. He will be missed by several nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.

Earl will be remembered for his many years of involvement with the local baseball programs. He spent much of his time with the Charlie Brown League, Little League, men's, ladies and girls fastball, and slow pitch. He was a player, coach, and an umpire. He was also instrumental in refurbishing the A & W diamonds. Earl also coached hockey, was an avid bowler, and really enjoyed curling during his short retirement.

Earl was a member of the Masonic Order for more than 33 years. He was the Past Master of Lake of the Woods Lodge #445 and an affiliate of Keewatin Lodge #417. He was also District Deputy Grand Master of District 17 in 1998-99. Membership was also held in Golden Chapter #90, Ledger Preceptory, and Holy Bay Conclave. Earl also held the position of Worthy Patron numerous times in Wennonah Chapter #18 Order of the Easter Star. He truly treasured his association with his Masonic family.

Earl was employed for 40 years with Vacationland Dairy, retiring as

plant manager. He loved his dairy and the people he worked with there. At home, he would spend most of his time puttering around the house and yard. He loved the outdoors.

His greatest love were his children and grandchildren. He treasured each and every moment with them and was so very proud of all of them. He will be always missed and lovingly remembered.

A Masonic Memorial Service will take place at the Kenora Masonic Temple on Sunday, February 15, 2004 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Services to celebrate Earl's life will be held at the Kenora Community Funeral Home on Monday, February 16 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers donations to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation C.T. Scanner, 21 Sylvan Street West, Kenora, Ontario P9N 3W7 would be greatly appreciated.

Emerson Morden Bland

It is with great sadness that the family of Emerson M. Bland announce the passing of a dear husband, wonderful father, and precious grandfather on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, with his loving family by his side.

Emerson was born on July 10, 1933, to Earl and Lillian Bland, on the family farm at Eden, Manitoba.

He married Jean Watson on December 19, 1953. After they were married , they moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba, then moved back to the family farm in Eden, Manitoba and in 1956 they moved to Keewatin.

Emerson was employed at several different jobs and had spent 34 and half years at the Paper Mill before his retirement in 1991.

He enjoyed gardening, travelling, playing cards, and spending time with his friends.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Jean and their children Wes and wife Nancy, Marlene (Chickie), and Tom and wife Sandra, and his cherished grandchildren Bryan, Cody, Nathan, Aaron, and Jeremy. Also surviving are his sisters Mavis Bland and Ed Kasprick and Maxine and Bill Harper and brother-in-law Bill and Joyce Watson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents Earl and Lillian Bland, sister and brother-in-law June and Bob Griffiths, brother Gerald Bland, and nephew Greg Kasprick.

Funeral services in celebration of Emerson's life will be held on Monday, February 16, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. in the Kenora Community Funeral Home with The Reverend Canon Catherine Giroux officiating.

Julius Misurka

Mr. Julius Misurka, a resident of Kenora, passed away on February 14, 2004 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.

He was predeceased by his parents Lucas and Catherine, son David, brothers Michael, William, Max, sisters Anne and Sophie, and daughter-in-law Elaine.

He is survived by his loving wife Ethel of 64 years, two sons Edward (Lynne) and Dennis; his grandchildren Sarah (Ian) Hyslop, Kate Misurka, Michael Misurka and Lindsay Misurka; his great grandchildren John and Ewan Hyslop. As well as one brother Walter and several sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

As a young man, Julius moved to Kenora in 1937, where he enjoyed the outdoors and made many good friends. He was a fair and honest man who loved his wife and family to excess.

Julius was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus of the Father Lacombe Council with 36 years experience.

Prayers will be said on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church with Father Daren Gallivan officiating.

Pallbearers are Michael Misurka, Ian Hyslop, Bill Burris, John Berringer, Bill Zabloski. Honorary pallbearers are Roy Gardiner, George Bissonette, Sarah Hyslop, Kate Misurka, Lindsay Misurka.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CT Scan Fund at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Julius' memory.

Lillian (Lily) Ester Berglund

May 14, 1917 - February 15, 2004

Peacefully on Sunday, February 15, 2004 surrounded by her family, Lily passed away at Pinecrest Home for the Aged.

Born in Dryden on May 14, 1917 she was 86 years old.

Lily was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Holger Berglund Sr. on October 31, 1991.

She leaves to mourn her three daughters and one son: Tilda and Henry Russel of Dryden, Linda and Rick Wrigley of Thunder Bay, Sonya and Bob Simpson of Kenora, Holger and Cathy Berglund of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Seven grandchildren: Caroline (Rod), Amy, Kathy (Cliff), BJ (Fred), Jolene (James), Amber (Bruce) and Cory. Five great grandchildren: Paige, Samantha, Allison, Riley and Elijah.

Mom was a selfless person who devoted her whole life to her family. She will be sadly missed by all of us.

At her request, there will be no service. A family service will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pinecrest Home for the Aged.
