It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Anderson Heder, peacefully on Saturday August 7, 2004 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital with family by her side, after a courageous four year battle with cancer. Predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Dora (Richardson) Anderson. Survived by her four children and three grandchildren: Susan Smith and sons Matthew and Tyler (Cardinal); Judith (Ottawa); Martha and daughter Naomi (Toronto); John (Toronto). Also survived by her older sister, Jean (Edward) Hutton and family of Monmouth, Wales; her cousin, Peter (Kathleen) Richardson and family of Ashley Heath, Dorset, England; her cousin David (Connie) Anderson and family of Fleet, Hampshire, England; as well as other Anderson and Richardson relatives in northern England.

At Mary’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. After cremation she wished her family and friends to gather together to remember her life. To fulfill that wish, her family invite her friends and neighbours to a celebration of her life at the Brockville Rowing Club on Saturday September 11th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam Donations may be made to ‘PCCC – Hospice of Providence’ at 42 Garden Street, Brockville, Ontario K6V 2C3 as well as at the memorial service.

Born and raised in Durham, England, Mary emigrated to Canada in her early twenties. An intrepid and adventuresome woman ahead of her time she first taught for two years in the Okanogan Valley in B.C. Next she taught at the Grenfell Mission School in St. Anthony on the northern tip of Newfoundland for two years, then on to New York City for a year. Coming back to Toronto she taught English at the Bishop Strachan School. Before starting her family she resided in Munich Germany for two years teaching English and traveling extensively. Upon her return to Canada she briefly taught at Brock University before focusing her considerable energies on raising her family.
