Potts, Thomas Fred
passed away peacefully on March 29, 2010 at the Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital at the age of 78 after a long and fierce battle with cancer. Predeceased by his wife Joan (2006), survived by his sons Robert, William (Doris), Thomas and Matthew (Janet) and his brother Robert (Shirley) of Winnipeg. Will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Alexandra; Shannon and Andrew and his sister-in-law Jean. He was revered and admired by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Mary and Matthew, and siblings May, Margaret, Dorothy, Matthew (WWII) and Jean. Fred was born in Burgessville, Ontario and lived an extraordinary life. Graduated from Queen’s University in 1956 and was a flight cadet for the RCAF during those years. After school, his career included work with Computing Devices, North American Aviation in Columbus, Ohio and with Avro Aircraft Ltd. from May 1956 to June 1959. He was also a pioneer in the Ottawa Hi-Tech industry with the formation of Dipix Systems in 1978. Upon retirement, he immersed himself into the Japanese culture by learning the language and living in Japan for 9 months. He also became an avid sailor and was a member of the Kanata and Nepean Sailing Clubs. Along the way, he developed cherished friendships with people from abroad and close to home from all avenues of life. Special thanks to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital for their devoted care in the past 2 months. At Fred’s request, arrangements are private. The family would appreciate memorial donations be made to the Bruyère Foundation.

Sample, Ephriam Wellington
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ephriam Sample on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at the age of 78 years. Beloved husband and soul mate of Ruth Sample. Cherished father of Brenda (Nelson Holtman), Jeff (Sue Boileau) and Sheila (Mike Gallagher). Loving grandfather of Chantal (John), Dan, Andrew (Dominique), Amanda, Laura, and Kathleen. Great grandfather of Ashley, Serena, Kaylie and Alissa. Brother of Myrtle McGee (Keith). Predeceased by his parents Alex and Edith Sample and brothers Ernie, Charles, Arthur, Cecil and sisters Muriel, Reta, Lola and Jean. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the nursing staff at the Renaissance who provided him with excellent care. There will be no visitation. A private family service will be held. Those wishing may make memorial donations to La Renaissance, 445 Wilfred Lavigne, Gatineau, J9H 6H9.

Birrell, Gwendolyn Lillian "Gwen" nee Hodgins
Quietly at Granite Ridge on Monday, March 29, 2010 in her 85th year. Beloved wife of William “Bill” Birrell. Loving mother of Alan, Elaine Burton and the late Eric. Cherished grandmother of James and Dana Burton. Dear sister of Ruth Thomas and the late Doris Byatt. The family wishes to express its appreciation to the Staff of Granite Ridge Nursing Home and to West End Villa Nursing Home for both their care and kindness over the last year of her life. As well to her friends for their continuing visits and interest in her welfare, which were always appreciated. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society, The Ottawa Hospitals or the Ottawa Heart Institute would be appreciated.

Smyth, Dwight
passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at the age of 66. Son of the late George Smyth and the late Hilda McCauley. Husband of the late Marjolaine Cayer . He will be sadly missed by his daughters Tammy (late Dave Thompson) and Laurie (John Fisher), his grandchildren Colby and Ben and a best friend TeeJay. Friends may call at CADIEUX TUBMAN FUNERAL HOME, 322 avenue de Buckingham, Gatineau on Thursday, April 1, 2010 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The service will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church on Friday, April 2, 2010 at 11 a.m., followed by the internment at St. John’s Wilderness cemetery in Glen-Almond, QC. Peacefully in hospital on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 in her 80th year. Beloved wife of the late Dalton Hickey. Dear mother of Carrol Purdy (Paul) of Colorado and Judy Hartin (Don Stansbury) of Nanaimo, BC. Loving grandmother of Jennifer, Zachary, Saturn and Dion. Also survived by her previous husbands Gerald Robichaud and Don Hartin. Predeceased by her parents Elva and Robert Dawson. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Home, 3440 Richmond Rd., (between Baseline Rd and Bayshore Dr.) Nepean on Thursday, from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be no service. Those wishing may make memorial donations to the Arthritis Society.

Peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, March 31st 2010 in his 89th year. Son of the late William and Catherine Bennett. Bud is survived by his brother Dan, sisters Etheleen Stanzel and Audrey Wilson and by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sisters Doris, Marjorie, Bernice and by a brother Gordon. Friends may call at the Carleton Place Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 61 Lake Avenue West, Carleton Place on Monday, April 5, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 12 noon until service time in the chapel at 2 p.m. Branch 192 Carleton Place Royal Canadian Legion Walk Through on Monday evening at 7 p.m. Interment United Cemeteries in the spring. Chow, Sophie
It is with joy and sorrow that Carol Tso and Norman Chow announce the birth and death of their first-born baby daughter, Sophie. She was born on March 29, 2010 and died peacefully the next day in her mother’s arms. Carol and Norman share their grief with their family. Peacefully on March 30, 2010 at the age of 78. Born in Punnichy, Sask. She is survived by her loving daughter Rina and son-in-law Blair, her brother Joe and sister-in-law Marion, her sister Kay and brother-in-law the late Jake. There will be a gathering to celebrate Rose’s life on Sunday, April 4, 2010 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at 2764 Rowatt Street, Ottawa, ON 613.820.5509. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Edna Dorothy Swettenham, on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, beloved wife of Edward Leonard Swettenham. Loving mother to Robert Swettenham and Susan Swettenham and very special Granny to Anya Swettenham. Survived by her brother George (Kaye) Munharvey, sister Doris (Robert) MacIntyre and brother-in-law Stanley (Phyliss) Swettenham. Pre-deceased by sisters Lois (the late Allen) Mulligan, Lyla (the late Clare) Grant, Muriel (Herb) Philpott, and brothers John (Jean) Munharvey and Gilbert (Anne) Munharvey and sister-in-law Evelyn (the late James) Fleming. Aunt to many nieces and nephews. An active volunteer all of her life, Edna remained committed to Faith, Family and Friends. Visitation will be held at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road (at Roosevelt) on Friday, April 9 from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m. Special thanks to the Civic Hospital, Palliative Home Care Team (CCAC) and the Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital. McKiel, Marie Rose
On April 6, 2010 in hospital. Marie was born and raised in Sydney, Nova Scotia. She married her husband, Bob, there in 1943. They moved to Ontario as Bob completed his education and began a career. After his retirement, they returned to the south shore of Nova Scotia, where they spent many happy years together. It was Marie’s dream to live beside the ocean – being able to smell the salt air, and she was able to do this during their years at Port Hebert. Bob predeceased her in July 2009. She is survived by her sons David (Mary Jane), Don (Dawn) and Greg (Ross), her grandchildren Maggie (Chris), Andy (Jennifer), Sarah (Perry) and Laura, as well as 6 great grandchildren, and her sisters Ruth and Cathy. She will be greatly missed. At her request, there will be no funeral.

Suddenly, on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 in her 90th year. Beloved wife of the late Canon Eldon Davis. Much loved mother of the Venerable Robert (and his wife the Rev. Cathy) of Pembroke, Susan Scott (and her husband Gary) of Port Alberni, BC, Hilary Davis of Toronto, Jim (and his wife Linda) of Nepean, the Rev. Judith Paulsen (and her husband Patrick) of Oshawa and Guy (and his wife Joanne) of Ottawa. Proud and loving grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Philip, Robert, Bruce and Stuart Margetts, and their families, all of Australia. Predeceased by brothers Ivor and Geoffrey. Friends may call at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, 930 Watson Street on Friday, April 16th from 4 pm until time of service, which will be held in the Church at 6:00 pm, followed by a reception. Selke, Blanche Anna
passed away peacefully at West End Villa on Wednesday the 7th of April 2010 in her 92nd year. Blanche was the daughter of the late Frank J. Selke and the late Mary Agnes Schmidt. She was predeceased by her sister Evelyn (late Paul Bibeault). She is survived by her brothers Chilton (late Geraldine) and Frank (Red) and her sisters, Sr. Enid (Sister of St-Joseph) Delphine (late Tim Condon) and Geraldine. She will be missed by her 16 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Friends may pay respects at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Bayshore and Baseline Road), Nepean, Ontario on Sunday April 11 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. John the Apostle Church, 2340 Baseline Road, Nepean Ontario on Monday April 12th at 2:00 pm. Interment to be at a later date in Rigaud, Quebec. Our sincere thanks and appreciation to all the 5th floor staff at West End Villa for their loving care of Blanche.
