Allardyce, Dorothy Isabel (née Bailey)
On a warm Friday, June 5, 1914, a daughter was born to George and Lillian Bailey recently emigrated from England. It was the beginning of a wonderful 95 years for Dorothy, the eldest of four children born between 1914 and 1918. Dorothy led her two younger sisters, Katherine and Olive and her brother Arthur through the maze of childhood and youth, the Great Depression, World War II and into marriage for all of them. Dorothy survived major pulmonary surgery in the mid 1930’s. During her recuperation in Ste. Agathe, Que., she met her future husband, John, the father of their sons, Robin and Gordon. married in 1944 the young family stayed in Dorothy’s parent’s home in Ville Emard for three years, moving to Verdun in 1949 to a small coal heated cottage. In 1955, John decided to sell and in two weeks moved their family into a new “modern” home in L’Abord a Plouffe (now Laval) north of Montreal. Here, she and John brought up the boys and looked after her mother Lillian for the last decade of her mother’s life. After John’s death in 1978, Dorothy remained in the family home on her own. In 1982, she was persuaded to move to Ottawa and into “220 Viewmount” as one of the first residents. For 27 years, the “220 family” provided her with comfort, peace, and friendship. Daily support came from her neighbours and immediate family increasingly in the last four years which allowed her to live with relative independence until last week. She never wanted to go to a “nursing home”. This was her most fervent wish and it was granted. She slipped away quietly on a bright crisp Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 9:18 a.m. with her son, Robin at her side. The rest of the family had been with her constantly during the previous five days and was preparing to gather with her again later in that day. Loved and caressed by her family extensively during the previous few days, she decided that it was time to take her leave which she did with dignity and peace. Pre-deceased by her siblings – Arthur (1989), Kay (2004) and Olive (2008) and granddaughter Colleen (1991), Dorothy was never without support in her latter years. She had four grandchildren, Laura, Richard, Heather and Timothy, “granddaughter-in-law” Stephanie and a new great grandchild Zoë, daughter-in-law Brenda, and sons Gordon and Robin to warm her heart. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Civic Campus emergency ward, AMA5 and the night staff responsible for her in Room 501. She was treated with care and dignity and kept comfortable in her last hours. To each of the doctors and nurses involved, thank you. Dorothy is at peace and she will continue to provide inspiration to us through her memory. It is a sad day but we will remember her with love. Dance with the angels, mom.
