BOYCHYN, George S. Q.C. -
Lawyer and family man born in Toronto October 12, 1924: died of Cancer at Oshawa, Ontario January 30th, 2002, aged 77.
George was born in Toronto, the son of Ukrainian immigrants. George grew up on a market garden farm on Altona Road at the Rouge River. The Boychyn fanily dug the basement for the original Elizabeth Finn Public School with a horse and scraper bucket. The family moved to Whitby in the 1940's where they acquired a mixed farm on Anderson St. The family's resources were directed to putting at least one of their children through university, and George, being the youngest was the beneficiary of that effort and eventually became a lawyer.
In the army during the war, George fortunately only saw action from coast to coast in Canada as a medical orderly in the Halifax military hospital and as a coast watcher in British Columbia where he participated in repelling an "invasion" of sea lions.
George married his first wife Rosie Sloy in June 1945. They had two sons, Robert and Donald, both of whom became lawyers and joined their father in the practice of law in the Oshawa firm of Humphreys, Boychyn & Hillman.
For almost five decades George was a successful general practitioner in Oshawa beginning in 1949 when he came to work as a junior for R.D. Humphreys Q.C., eventually becoming his partner. The hallmark of the partnership was that there was never any written agreement between them, only a handshake. The partnership eventually grew to include Arleigh Hillman Q.C., John Humphreys Q.C. and George's sons Bob and Don.
George dedicated his law practice to helping the working men and women of the community. He served with passion and commitment to fairness and equity for all, whether in the civil courts or in the criminal courts. His reputation for expert cross-examination technique was well known. George was a fierce competitor, but at no time did he lose his sense of compassion and dignity even for his opponents. George was always a gentleman. He never held a grudge and had no enemies.
He was generous to a fault, both spiritually and materially. In his final days when all hope was gone, "he felt badly that he was wasting a bed that could have been used by soneone that could be cured". He helped people of any station in life. George was active in his congregation, St. Mark's United Church in Whitby. He served for many years as the solicitor for the Oshawa General Hospital. George was an unpretentious man and was held by many to be an example of a gentleman, a man of dignity and goodwill. All in all, George's life and character could be summed up in the simple phrase. "He was a good man."
After the death of his first wife, Rosie in 1993, he married Mary Beaulieu of Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1994 with whom he enjoyed the last eight years of his life. George will be sorely missed by his wife Mary, his sons Robert and wife Claire; Donald and wife Ellen, and his grandsons Steven, David and Peter all of Oshawa, and his grandson Michael and wife Karin of Indianapolis, Indiana. George's family was the light of his life.
George was predeceased by his sister Mary Andruskiw of Whitby and is survived by his brothers John of Bowmanville and Michael of Scarborough.
