He graduated in Medicine from the University of Toronto on 1942, doing his internship at Hamilton Hospital. He entered the Royal Air Force immediately afterward, and served until 1946 as a Medical Officer, stationed primarily in Newfoundland. After the war he continued post-graduate studies in internal Medicine and Pathology in Toronto, at St. Michael's and Sunnybrook hospitals. He married his university girlfriend, Olive Ostapowich in 1947. Settling on Oshawa, Olive and John each gave many years to active involvement in community and professional associations. In 1949 Dr. John joined the medical staff of General Motors of Canada, soon becoming Medical Director. Reflecting his shift into industry, he completed the program of Industrial Medicine at U. of T. in 1957; he also received certification from the American Board Preventive Medicine. Dr. John always showed great dedication to his medical practice, but put in equal weight on spending time with his family and friends. Until Olive’s death in 1984, the two of them traveled frequently in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. After he reached retirement age at G.M., he again shifted his professional focus and joined the medical staff at Whity Mental Health Centre. Until he was 81 he continued to practice, sharing duties at Whitby, Oshawa General (now Lakeridge Health) and the Workman’s Compensation Board. Dr. John will be missed by his partner, Mrs. Bernadette Bradly, his children: Harold; Joanne and husband Karl Loszak; Don and wife Debbie Redgers; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Laura Loszak.
