Patricia Powell - Tomlinson
05/07/1916 - 09/11/2012

“It was worth every minute”

Pat passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home near Brome village on November 9, 2012, with her daughter Wendy by her side.

During the war, Mum served as a Red Cross nurse in England, and in 1945, she married Captain Charles Lester Tomlinson, Canadian Grenadier Guards, (BSc. Bishops).

In January of ‘46, Mum arrived in Montreal by plane, and experienced her first Canadian winter living at the Glen Eagles. In the spring, Dad joined his brother George (Frances) at Howard Smith Paper Mill in Cornwall, and in Cornwall they raised their two children, Anne and Wendy.

In 1961, the family moved to Montreal, where they lived happily, with summers spent at the family cottage at 16 Island Lake, until Lester’s tragic and unexpected death in October 1974. ‘Les’ was the love of Mum’s life.

In 1976, Mum moved to the Townships, and established herself in the Lac Brome community: she did volunteer work at Brome Mississquoi - Perkins; was a keen gardener; loved her dogs and cats, was a member of St John’s Anglican Church in Brome; a member of the Snowbirds ski club, and a charter member of Racquets Brome where she played competitive tennis and belatedly took up squash until a knee replacement forced her early retirement in1995.

Of this setback and of the painful rehab, Mum often said “it was worth every minute” and that sentiment perhaps best sums up her cheerful and optimistic view of life.

Following her sports injury, Mum moved to her daughter Anne’s farm where for the next ten years she enjoyed country life and watched the seasonal procession of foals, mares and yearlings just meters from her doorstep. Mum also spent treasured years with Wendy’s son Nathan (1976 - 2000) who graduated from nearby University of Western Ontario.

In 2006, Mum returned to her beloved Townships and took up residence at the Manoir Lac Brome where she made new friends, and renewed old acquaintances. At 91, Mum discovered another talent and became a prolific and accomplished artist.

In her last months, Mum moved to her daughter’s home near Brome where she received wonderful care, and could enjoy life on her own terms and at her own pace. Here in the ever - present company of cats, her pet birds and surrounded by her favourite music, welcome visits from good friends and family were the order of the day.

Mum leaves behind daughters Anne (Punch) and Wendy; her much cherished granddaughter Leala who also became a nurse and who gave mum a lifetime of joy and pride; brother - in - law Dick; nieces Sally (Alan) and Susan (John); nephews Peter, David (Alison), John (Mary), and a legion of extended family and friends.

Many thanks to the caring Manoir staff; palliative caregivers Maureen Woods, Patricia Moynan and Jeri Burgess; and CLSC home care workers Carol, OT Mona Drapeau, and palliative care nurse Nicole Lefebvre.

A private family gathering will take place in the spring in Montreal.

If you wish, please make a donation in Mum’s memory to the Brome Mississquoi - Perkins Hospitalor to the SPCA.

A celebration of Pat’s life will take place at Wendy’s home on Friday, November 16th from 3 - 6 pm.
