Mr. Wilfred Mercer
May 20, 1932 - August 25, 2007
Wilfred A. Mercer
75, New Waterford
May 20, 1932 - August 25, 2007
It is with great sadness and also the fondest of memories that we take this moment to share with you our grave loss.
Our beloved Husband, Father, Grandpa, Poppy and friend has left us.
He passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 25th 2007.
Wilfred was a proud family man to the moment of his passing and loved to have his family nearby.
Being a father of six children allowed for the abundant blessings of a large family with plenty of grandchildren; all of whom considered his home their home too.
Christmas was especially a wonderful time, as our family would converge under one roof to share love and give thanks to God for our blessings.
To this day, not a birthday was missed as all were celebrated at the family home together with his wife Audrey, their six children, thirteen grandchildren and extended family.
Wilfred looked forward to the annual family barbeque at their summer home in Boulardrie, where family and friends would gather for food and celebrate the chaos and humour of life.
These are the memories we will miss, yet cherish forever.
Even in the later years as Wilfred faced failing health, he remained determined to live each day to the fullest.
He remained active and visibly happy to the end.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Isaac and Mary Emma (Crane) Mercer.
Wilfred retired from DEVCO in 1971 after 24 years of service.
He was a member of Calvin United Church as well as a former Board member.
In his earlier years, he belonged to the Orange Lodge, New Waterford.
Wilfred loved baseball and was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.
He loved animals; especially his cat "Lady" and looked forward to his daily trips to see his adopted dog "Tuffy" and cat "Bella".
He also enjoyed playing cards and spending time at his summer home.
But mostly, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Wilfred is survived by his loving wife Audrey (Dejeet) Mercer of 54 years; six children, daugther Linda (Randy) Martell of New Waterford, Wilfred (Joan), Kenneth (Mary Catherine), Sheldon (Marlene) all of Lingan, David in Calgary and Glenn (Agnes) in Saskatchewan.
Wilfred is survived by his brother Louis of New Waterford and 13 grandchildren; Stephanie, Eric, Rebecca, Amanda, Melissa ‘Muttonhead’, Michael, Steven, Sean, Matthew, Ryan, Helen, Magen and Kelsey; nieces Judy, Valerie, Darlene; nephews Johnnie, Gary and two brothers in law, Aubrey Dejeet and Rev. Alfred (Bertha) Dejeet; cherished lifelong friends Wallace & Loretta Head, Ivy & Will Milley, Steve Drake Sr.,cousin Marge and her husband Gord Peckham.
Wilfred was predeceased by a sister Beatrice Jean and brother William in infancy, sisters in law Juliana and Shirley.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 28th, 2007 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J.McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
The funeral service officiated by Rev. Duncan Roach is Wednesday, 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church followed by interment in Union Grove Cemetery.
All are welcome to join the family for a reception in Calvin Hall following the service.
Wilfred will be taken to Calvin Church on noontime, Wednesday.
As an expression of sympathy for Wilfred, donations in his memory may be made to the S.P.C.A or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Dad-Papa, Because of you the world was a nicer place. Because of you, we know what it means to love unconditionally and to give unselfishly. Losing you leaves an emptiness in our hearts that will never be filled. We will love you and miss you everyday that we are not together, but we know we have a special angel in heaven to watch over us. We love you.
