FITZGERALD -- Vi (Vivian) passed away on December 18, 1997 in Toronto, Ontario at age 59. Survived by her mother Grace; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Mary, David and Karen; sisters, Wanda and Sylvia; brother Brian; nieces, Kathy, Melanie an Meegan; and nephew Patrick and wife Donna. Vi retired after twenty-three years in the Canadian Armed Forces and made her home in Toronto. May she rest in peace. Her family wish to thank all her friends in Toronto who stood by her in her time of need, especially Carol Cunningham and Winnie Brouse. No Service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.

FORCZEK -- Laszlo "Leslie" Orban Forczek, passed away in Lethbridge on Wednesday, December 31, 1997, at the age of 74 years, after a courageous battle with cancer. Leslie is survived by his three daughters, Doreen (Gerald) Varzari of Lethbridge, Tille Forczek of Toronto and Cynthia (Byron) Fritzler of Lethbridge; and his two special granddaughters, Claire and Eyvn Fritzler of Lethbridge. He is also survived by his sister Mathilda Forczek of Hungary. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 1998 in MARTIN BROS. Riverview Chapel, 610 - 4 Street South, Lethbridge with Father Derek Zarebski, SDS officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. GARDNER -- Florence Lilian Gardner, beloved wife and very best friend of Charles, passed away December 29, 1997 at the Foothills Hospital after fighting a valiant battle subsequent to cardiac surgery and suffering the ensuing ravages of pneumonia. Beides her loving husband, Florence is also survived by her two brothers, Douglas (Mary) Wortman of Moncton, New Brunswick, and Donald Wortman of Marmora, Ontario; as well as numerous nephews and nieces spread across Canada. A private bedside service was held on December 29, 1997. At Florence's request, there will be no Funeral Service. GILLIES -- On December 30, 1997, Mrs. May Gillies passed away peacefully at the age of 85 years at the Rockyview Hospital, Calgary. She is survived by her children, Arnold (Grace) Rumbold of Edmonton, Lois (William) Morrant of Waseca, Faith (Brian) Brg of Calgary, and Gertrude (John) Nicks of Toronto; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two children. May was a dedicated Calgarian and was proud of her membership in the Native Calgarians Society. A Memorial Service will be held at JACQUES FUNERAL HOME, 240 - 17 Avenue S.W., Calgary on Saturday, January 3, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Lynn Maki officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. GROVES -- Donald Burton (Don) passed away December 30, 1997 at Claresholm, Alberta. He was born in Truro, Nova Scotia, July 28, 1932, the eldest son of Jennie (Richardson) Groves of Truro, Nova Scotia and the late George Melvin Groves. He is survivedby his dear wife Dorothy of Claresholm; and his beloved daughters, Marianne (Stephen) Raymond of Trenton, Ontario and Patricia (Peter) Barriage of Calgary. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter Janet in 1976. Also he is survived by four grandchildren, Gregory and Stephanie Raymond of Trenton, and Paul and Janet Barriage of Calgary. He was the dear brother of Bette (John) Dornan of Truro, N.S., Robert (Laurie) Groves of Wolfville, N.S. and Clarey Groves of Toronto. Don served in the RCAF from 1952 to 1967. He had retired from the ALCB in 1992. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and until recently a dedicated member of the Al Azhar Temple and the Legion of Honor Unit. He is a past president of the Grande Prairie Al Shamal Shrine Club and an original member of the Southern Alberta Tartan Degree Team. Cremation has taken place and a private family Service will be held at LEYDEN'S "Chapel of Remembrance", Claresholm, AB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Willow Creek Auxiliary Hospital, Box 2305, Claresholm, AB T0L 0T0. HARRISON -- Douglas Mark Harrison passed away in a motor vehicle accident near Lake Louise, Alberta on December 27, 1997, at the age of 36 years. Born and raised in Calgary, Doug graduated from Central Memorial High School and earned his Bachelor of cience degree in Engineering at the University of Calgary in 1983. He worked at Shell Canada Limited for eleven years. Doug was an avid sportsman and loved his family dearly. He will be sadly missed by his wife Arlene; his children, Sam, Christine and Jennifer; his parents, Lorin and Donna Harrison, Frieda Hunter (Ron), Richard Hunter (Ruth); brother Gary (Debbie); sister Linda Brown (Jim), and Elton Hunter (Debbie), Dr. Allen Hunter (Susan) and Gwen Hansen (Kevin). Funeral Services will be held at Southminster United Church (3818 - 14A Street S.W.), on Saturday, January 3, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Harry L. Taylor officiating. JANZ -- Erna Martha (Lange) Janz went peacefully to meet her Lord and Savior at Calgary on December 29, 1997 at the age of 91 years. Erna was born at Kolm-Schnecken, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1951. Since January 1992, she has been a residen of the Extendicare Cedars Villa. Left to mourn her passing, but grateful that her suffering is over, are her six sons, Helmut (Martha), Artur (Erika), Kurt (Ruth), Alfred (Ingrid), Henry (Ellie), all of Calgary, and Gerhard (Esther) of Cremona, AB; nineteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren; one brother Kurt in Germany; nephews, nieces and many friends. Erna was predeceased by her husband of more than fifty-three years Bernhard, seven sisters, two brothers, an infant son and an infant great-granddaughter. Although she is no longer with us, her family will always gratefully and lovingly remember her devotion to the Lord, her concern for her family, neighbors and friends, her sincerely warm smile, her love of music, and her example of finding joy in the work she did. Funeral Services will be held at First Mennonite Church (2600 Richmond Road S.W.), today at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Ken Bechtel and Rev. Jacob Wiebe officiating. KOSTUIK -- Mary Kostuik of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on December 30, 1997 at the age of 81 years. Mary was born on St. Patrick's Day March 17, 1916, in Plunkett, Saskatchewan. She was employed by Weston Bakeries for thirty years,retiring in 1980. Mary is survived by her loving children, two sons, Robert Kostuik and wife Pamela of Calgary, Edward and a daughter-in-law Bev of Calgary; six grandchildren, Sharon, Donna, Steve, Dan, Bill, Joy; four great-grandchildren, Curtis, Krystal, Robby, Kayla. She is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Connie Syryda, Vic and Georgie Syryda; four sisters, Margaret and Mike Skuban, Helen and Dave Coates, Belle and Johnny Torok, Ilean Didow. KRISTENSEN -- Knud (Ken), of Calgary, passed away peacefully in the early morning of December 30, 1997, at the age of 72 years, after a lengthy struggle with the ravages of Alzheimers. Ken is survived and will always be remembered by his loving and dvoted wife of forty-seven years, Mrs. Erna Kristensen; his son Jan (Dorothy) Kristensen; and grandchildren, Evan and Dayna Kristensen. He was predeceased by a son Terry in 1981. Knud and Erna arrived in Canada in 1952 from their native Denmark and have lived in the Calgary area since 1953. Ken was retired after more than twenty-five years working at the U of C. He will always be remembered for his active life which revolved around his love of children, sports and animals. He coached and began the first minor soccer program in North Calgary and served for six years as sports director of Renfrew Community in the sixties. His love of animals and especially horses led to an active hobby of providing riding instruction and boarding to many from the Calgary and Okotoks area. Ken was extremely active as a horse show senior judge and official throughout Western Canada. He participated in the selections for the Olympics in three-day eventing and dressage. Funeral Services to be conducted by Pastor Art Berge at Peace Lutheran Church, 14640 - 6 Street S.W., on Friday, January 2, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Union Cemetery, Okotoks. KWOK -- Mr. Wai Ying Kwok, beloved husband of Mrs. Li Woo Gnan Kwok of Calgary, passed away peacefully on December 27, 1997 at the age of 86 years. MacDONALD -- Wm. Craig, born July 17, 1960, Montague, Prince Edward Island, and resident of Charlottetown until settling west to Calgary in 1980, passed away peacefully at home in the company of his sister, and his friend and companion of sixteen yeas on December 30, 1997 at the age of 37 years. Predeceased by his father Hector MacDonald, Craig is survived by his mother C. Irene MacDonald; sister Margaret (James) Ceretti and family; brother Cameron (Leah) MacDonald; plus numerous aunts and uncles. Craig will be deeply missed by his many friends both near and far, and remembered most for his kind and loving heart, his listening ear, and uproarious laughter. Never a gentler soul has touched our lives. May you find peace in the arms of our Lord. The MacDonald Family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Drs. Ted Vant and Martin LaBrie of Calgary and to the many home care attendants for their unfailing care, kindness and support throughout Craig's illness. MacDONALD -- Jessie Elizabeth, 77, St. Andrews, Antigonish Co., Nova Scotia, died Thursday, December 18, 1997 in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home. Born in Lower South River, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Rose (Nelson) McCaul. She was a longtim member of St. Andrew's Parish and the CWL. She also served on the parish council, St. Andrews Home and School and various other committees. Jessie worked as a rural mail driver for twenty years and was a county councillor for eighteen years. She was a member of the Advisory Council for the Status of Women. She served on the Antigonish School Board, Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library Board and on the Board for the School for Girls, Truro. She was a founding member of the R.K. MacDonald Guest Home and served on the board of directors. She is survived by sons, Allan (Sandy), Halifax, Donald (Angie) Richmond, B.C., Earl (Elaine), New Glasgow, Claude (Jane), Calgary, Archie (Frances), Doug (Joan), Shaun (Jackie), all of St. Andrews; daughters, Diane (Bert) Campbell, Calgary, Betty (Lawrie) Gray, Calgary; foster daughter Stella Andrea, Marion Bridge; brother John McCaul, Halifax; sister Margaret Hebert, Porters Lake; twenty-one grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Donald Alexander, daughter Rose, brothers, Earl and Redvers. Funeral was held on Monday, December 22 in St. Andrew's Church, St. Andrews, Rev. Vince MacLellan and Rev. Vernon Boutilier officiating. Burial in South River Cemetery. Donations to the Arthritis Society.

MANGAT -- December 27, 1997, Karnail Singh Mangat, aged 84 years of Calgary. He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Sukhdev Singh (Sukhbir Kaur), Gajjan Singh (Baljinder Kaur), Darshan Singh (Ramandeep Kaur) and Harwinder Singh (Manjinder aur); a daughter and son-in-law, Gurmit Kaur (Ranjit Singh) Jawanda; his grandsons, Lovpreet Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Amandev Singh, Gurdev Singh, Gurnupvir Singh, Mavdeep Singh and Harman Singh; and granddaughters, Novjot Kaur, Gurman Kaur, Samneet Kaur, Guggangeet Kaur Jawanda, and Harneet Kaur Jawanda. NORWOOD -- Agnes Isabella Norwood, beloved wife of the late David Norwood, passed away peacefully in Calgary with relatives present on December 27, 1997. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Lillian Mary McCoy of Cutknife, Saskatchewan; broter John L.R. Davie and his wife Lil of Cobourg, Ontario; nephews, Orville McCoy, Brent Davie, Douglas Davie, Ronald; niece Bonnie Jaeger. Also survived by five great-nieces and three great-nephews. NUGENT -- Ronald Elwood (Nuge) Nugent, beloved husband of Kathrine Nugent of Calgary, passed away at the Lindsay Park Sports Complex on December 30, 1997 at the age of 61 years. Ron was born in Lindsay, Ontario on June 30, 1936. He married Kathrine o March 19, 1960 in Lindsay, Ontario. Ron was the owner of AHS Homeowner's Service since 1988. He was also a member of the Calgary Gyro Club since 1986. Ron was a fun-loving guy who enjoyed life. He worked hard and played hard and his sense of joy and humour was passed on to everyone he met. His young spirit will be truly missed by his family and friends. Besides his loving wife, Ron is survived by three daughters, Maureen (John McGrath), Christine and Brenda, all of Calgary; as well as a grandchild Kelsey. He is also survived by three sisters, Muriel (Alec) Clarke of Lindsay, Ontario, Thelma (Ed) Corby of Oshawa, Ontario and Ruth Simon of Shallow Lake, Ontario; a brother-in-law Pat (Rose) Matsuoka; and a sister-in-law Maureen (John) Coleman, both of Calgary, Alberta; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sister Olive Hall and brother Howard Nugent. OTTAWAY -- Lawrence Eric Ottaway. June 3, 1953 - December 25, 1997 It is with the greatest sorrow Katie, Rhys and Megan announce the sudden passing, at home, of our beloved Daddy and husband, Larry, on Christmas Day, 1997. Larry worshipped his wife Mgan of twelve years and their two young children. Everything in Larry's life revolved around his family. Larry will be remembered by all as a loving, devoted father and husband. He brightened the lives of many with his jovial wit, laughter and boundless generosity. He will be deeply missed by all his "buddies" here in Calgary and back East. Larry was the loving son of Ann and Clive Ottaway of Hamilton, Ont. A handsome baby boy they would raise into a strong man with a truly unique and generous nature. They were proud to say he was their son. Mom and Dad's loss is severe. He is also survived by his sister Patricia (Rod) who always played the part of mother hen to him and his twin brothers, Robert (Angela) and Richard (Cindy), who on the most part looked up to their big brother. Larry's family is all from the Hamilton area. He was an uncle, playmate and friend to his nieces and nephews, Maggie, Graham, Alun, Lakme and Madeline, and he will be lovingly embraced by Poppa in heaven. Larry was a member of Temple Lodge 6Rc 296 AF & AM with his late father-in-law Bob Jones. A Celebration of Larry's Life for Katie and Rhys will be held in the Chapel of MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME on Friday, January 2, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. In accordance with Larry's wishes, Cremation will follow. Flowers graciously declined, but appreciated by the family would be memorial donations directed to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta (1825 Park Road S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 3Y6). The family would like to thank the quick response of the Emergency Medical Services here in the city of Calgary. Also, Medical Examiner Pat Brune for her professionalism, comfort and advice.
