MIKO -- Mrs. Sherry Joy Miko, beloved wife of Mr. Erwin Miko of Airdrie, passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on Friday, December 12, 1997 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Sherry and Erwin resided in Airdrie for the last sixteen years. Mrs. Miko loved to crochet, do ceramics, gardening, traveling and many other activities with her family and friends. She loved the company of many neighborhood children. She will always be remembered for her generosity towards others and for her courage and strength, her sense of humor and for her spirit during her life and her illness. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband Erwin; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Dani of Lethbridge; two daughters and a son-in-law, Debbie and Rick Evans of Didsbury, and Shelley Miko and her companion Brian Cornforth of Airdrie; seven grandchildren, Sarah Levon, Amanda, Heather, Ricky, Chancery and Chasen. She is also survived by her father Donald Wilson; her sister Carol Legge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sherry was predeceased by her mother Marjorie Wilson, her grandmother Margaret Tobin, and her grandfather Louis Tobin. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S "Airdrie Funeral Home", (300 Towerlane Drive, Airdrie, Alberta), on Tuesday, December 16, 1997 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway's "Airdrie Funeral Home", (300 Towerlane Drive, Airdrie, Alberta), on Wednesday, December 17, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Wallace Fry of the Airdrie United Church officiating. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, Second Floor, 215 - 12 Avenue S.E., Calgary, Alberta T2G 1A2. MOWAT -- It is with great sadness the family of Hildegarde Frances Mowat (nee Stang) would like to inform friends of her passing on Friday, December 12, 1997, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at LEYDEN'S "Chapel of Remembrance" (17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.) on Wednesday, December 17, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. McDERMID -- Katherine (nee Robinson) passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on December 13, 1997, following a brief illness. Born in Melfort, Saskatchewan and raised in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Katherine came to Calgary following the completion of her nursing training in Brandon. She was predeceased by her brothers, Arnold and John, who died in the Second World War, by her husband Don in 1979, and by her sisters, Isabel and Margaret. She is survived by her daughter Nancy; son John and daughter-in-law Laurie Allen, all of Calgary; and by her sister Florence of Fort Saskatchewan. Kaye worked for many years at the Associate Clinic following her arrival in Calgary. She was married to Don McDermid in 1952 and later left nursing to raise her family. She returned to work in the early 1970's when the Beverly Nursing Home opened its new facility on 90 Avenue S.W., and later retired as its Director of Nursing in 1983. Funeral Services will be held at JACQUES FUNERAL HOME, 240 - 17 Avenue S.W., Wednesday, December 17, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Union Cemetery. McLEAN -- Marie McLean, (nee Malloy) beloved wife of Mr. Hugh John McLean of fifty years, passed away peacefully at her residence on December 14, 1997, after a lengthy illness at the age of 79 years. NEILSON -- Antonia (Toni) Neilson (nee Kohout) of Brentwood Care Centre, passed away on December 12, 1997 in her 90th year. Antonia will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Karen (Fred) Gould of Nanton; her sons, Don (Isabel), Gerald, and Paul (Dolores); as well as her sister Anne Topak, all of Calgary. Also surviving are her eight grandchildren, Scott (Margo) Neilson of Vancouver, Valerie (Craig) Coulombe of Calgary, Shawna and Sharon Gould of Nanton, Robert, Eric, Kevin and Lesley Neilson of Calgary; and her nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Anton and Barbara Kohout and by her sisters, Mary Tupkal, Helen Mayer and Mildred Laidlaw. Antonia was born on October 13, 1908 in Michel B.C. and moved from the Crowsnest Pass to Calgary in 1928 to train at the Maxine Beauty School. She worked for the Hudson Bay and Eatons beauty salons in Calgary before retiring in 1974. Toni was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the many friendships she made through various groups including Time Out, Grace Bethany Group, the Mary Marthas, the choir, bible classes and the Westside Seniors. A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 1009 - 15 Avenue S.W. on Wednesday, December 17, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 114, 1212 - 1 Street S.E., Calgary T2G 0G8 or to Grace Presbyterian Church. Antonia's family would like to thank Dr. Nichol, the nurses and staff of the Brentwood Care Centre for their kindness and care during the last two years. REID -- Wray Hugh James Reid of Nanton, passed away at the High River Hospital on Thursday, December 11, 1997, at the age of 70 years. He is survived by his wife Fern; son Dirk and his wife Lori and grandchildren, Jeff and Shannon; son Roy and his wife Eva and grandchildren, Michael and Daniel; son Lance and his wife Kathy and grandchildren, Megan and Erica; stepdaughters, Colleen Albert and Brenda Stinson and her husband Philip and granddaughters, Tauney and Sierra; stepson Dale Albert and his wife Michelle and grandchildren, Kasha and Jace. He was predeceased by his father James Reid, mother Jean Reid, and his sisters, Doris Brandon and Ruth Reid. Wray came to Alberta from Souris, Manitoba in 1954 settling in Calgary. He worked for the City of Calgary Electric Department until his retirement in 1982. The family lived at DeWinton from 1968 to 1993 and retired to Nanton in March of 1993 where he resided until his death. During his retirement Wray was very active in the community as well as an avid golfer and curler. He also acted in a number of Windmill Theatre productions in High River. Wray was also a very close friend of Bill W. for nineteen years. Services will be held at the Nanton-Parkland United Church on Tuesday, December 16, at 2:00 p.m., the Reverends, Britt and Dirk Jessen officiating. ROCK -- Ada Rock (nee MacLean) of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 13, 1997 at the age of 90 years. Ada was born on September 7, 1907 in the Magdalen Islands, Quebec in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. As a young girl, she left the islands to work at Bishops College in Lennoxville, Que. where she met and married Frederick Rock. Upon the passing of her husband in 1948, Ada and her three children traveled west to Calgary where she resided until her passing. She is survived by two daughters and a son, Jean Harnes and Marion (Hans) Bauer of Calgary, and Charles (Alice) Rock of Val-des-Bois, Quebec; as well as five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Greta Turner and Mabel McRoberts; two brothers, Ralph MacLean and Ford MacLean; and a sister-in-law Marie McLean, and their families. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S "Park Memorial Chapel", (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.), on Tuesday, December 16, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jagdutt Singh of Church of the Holy Nativity officiating. RUPP -- Anna Marie Rupp (nee Hartung) went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 12, 1997 at the age of 95 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Emma (Fred) Hildebrandt and Ella (Ian) Walker; her daughter-in-law Gloria Rupp; six grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband David in 1982, her son Alfred in 1995, her grandson Dale in 1996, as well as her sister and six brothers. Anna was born in Brunnental, Russia in 1902 and she immigrated to Canada with her family in 1923. She and her husband farmed at Champion until their retirement in 1948. O think! To step on shore And that shore heaven! To take hold of a hand, And that God's hand! To breathe a new air, And feel it celestial air! To feel invigorated And know it immortality! O think! To pass from storm and tempest To one unbroken calm! To wake up And find it glory! Funeral Services will be held from the Bridgeland Evangelical Missionary Church (235 - 8A Street N.E.) on Tuesday, December 16, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastors, Colin Miekle and Alvin Roth officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Rupp Memorial Fund c/o Bridgeland Evangelical Missionary Church (235 - 8A Street N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 4H9). SMISTAD -- Ivar Smistad passed away peacefully at Bethany Care Centre, surrounded by his family on December 12, 1997 at the age of 87 years. He is survived by his wife Alice Jean; sons, Warren (Catherine), Rikard (Valerie Kinnear); daughter Ingrid Osborne (Kevin); and grandchildren, Ian, Carla, Breton, Erik and Andrew, all of Calgary. Ivar was born in Oksendal, Norway on May 12, 1910. He came to Canada at the age of sixteen. He worked at a variety of occupations and then attended Henderson Business College in Regina. In 1937 he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and served twenty interesting years, including two years as a Probation Officer for the Province of Nova Scotia. He also served in the Special Branch in Halifax during the war, acted as security officer during Canada's first mission to Greenland in 1940 and completed his final posting at RCMP headquarters in Ottawa. In 1957 he retired from the RCMP, moved to Calgary and started Mechanical Drywall. He also built many custom homes in Calgary and the surrounding area. His life centered around his family and the church. He served many years on the Council of Trinity Lutheran Church and was one of the founders of the Calgary Scandinavian Centre. Ivar was also a member of the Vasa Order. He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers and a sister in Norway, and a grandson Neil in 1980. He is survived by numerous relatives in Norway and Saskatchewan. A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 803 - 3 Avenue S.W. on Tuesday, December 16, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial tributes may be given to Trinity Lutheran Memorial Fund or to the Canadian Bible Society, 110 - 11 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2G 0W2. STEEL -- Kimberly Dawn Steel passed away quietly with family and close friends at her side on December 12, 1997 at the age of 25 years.
