MARIA PETERS
Maria (Neufeld) Peters passed away Sept. 11, 2005 at Steinbach Bethesda Hospital, at the age of 91 years.
She was born Feb. 28, 1914 in Saskatchewan. Her family moved to Paraguay when she was 11 years old. Mom's mother (Helen Sawatzky) passed away when Mom was six years of age. Mom's father then married her mother's sister (Aganetha Sawatzky). Mom grew up in a family of 22 children. She was baptized May 24, 1934. Mom married our father, John R. Peters, July 30, 1939. Eleven children were born to them during their marriage. In 1965 they moved back to Canada and made their new home in Steinbach, Man.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: daughter-in-law Anna (late Heinrich) Peters, Diedrich (Della) Peters, Agatha (late Pete) Ginter, Dave Peters, Jake (Mary) Peters, Elizabeth (Harry) Falk, Aron (Lois) Peters, John (Lucy) Peters; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and six half siblings.
She was predeceased by her husband, John R. Peters, in October 2001; one daughter, three sons, one son-in-law, 15 siblings and half siblings and one grandchild.
The funeral service was held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel Sept. 14, 2005. Interment at Heritage Cemetery.

ANNE SAWATZKY
1908 — 2005
Anne Sawatzky of Winnipeg, Man. passed away peacefully on Sept. 12, 2005 with some of her family in attendance at the Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 96 years. She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Shirley and Ert Peters (Sheryl and Wayne Sutter); Joanne and Jack Boyd (John, Jeff and Theresa), great-grandchildren Rachel and Marcus; and Sabrina Port.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Frank Sawatzky, in 1999; son Frank Wayne in infancy; Colin Port; and granddaughter Gaylyn Peters.
She is survived by sister Helen Zuchowski (nee Friesen) and brother Bill (Donna) Friesen.
She accepted the Lord as her personal Saviour and was baptized at age 17 and joined the EMB Church in Steinbach, Man.
Because of her husband's construction business they moved to Winnipeg in 1951 and have resided there ever since.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, 2 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr, Steinbach, Man. Interment at the Memorial Cemetery in Steinbach.
If friends so desire, donations in Anne's memory may be made to Canadian Sunday School Mission.

ELIZABETH FUNK (nee Dyck)
The family announces the passing of our mother, Elizabeth Funk of Lincoln, Nebraska, Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005 at the Madonna Home.
Elizabeth was born Nov. 1, 1917 in Lowe Farm, Man. to Aganetha (nee Hiebert) and Heinrich Dyck.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, David Funk, May 3, 1989; and one son-in-law, Dennis Guenther. She is survived by daughters, Vi (and husband Gordon) Kreutzer, Thelma Guenther (and husband Peter Dick), both of Steinbach, Man. She is also survived by sons, Allan (and wife Julie) and Wayne (and wife Kelly) of Lincoln, Nebraska, as well as 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She will be lovingly remembered by her brothers, Abe (and wife Helen) and Ben (and wife Fran); and sisters, Sarah Banman, Marge (and husband Clarence) Rempel, and Nettie (and husband Henry) Braun.
Elizabeth and David's early years were spent working on a farm in the Morris municipality. In 1945, they moved to Steinbach, Man. and resided there until 1963. At that time the company that David worked for relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska.
Church was always an important part of her life. Mom sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was active in the ladies' mission group. She was proud to have been a charter member of Grace Mennonite Church in Steinbach, and later a member of the Evangelical Free Church of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 9, 2005 at the Lincoln Memorial Park Mortuary in Lincoln, Nebraska.
ANTON (TONY) HARDER
July 2, 1931 — Sept. 8, 2005
Tony Harder was born in the Rose Farm School District near Plum Coulee, Man., July 2, 1931. He was predeceased by his parents, Diedrich and Maria Harder, four brothers and two sisters. He leaves to mourn, three sisters, Helen Schroeder, Jesse Toews, and Sarah McDonald.
Tony will be remembered for his courage, his determination to never give up, his wonderful crooked smile, his bright blue eyes, and his strained response of acknowledgement when you greeted him.
Funeral service was held Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at the Rest Haven Nursing Home, and at 2 p.m. at the Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach, Man.
Donations in Tony's memory may be made to the Rest Haven Foundation.
MARIA SAWATZKY (nee Voth)
April 29, 1909 to Sept. 11, 2005
Maria Sawatzky passed away peacefully Sept. 11, 2005 at the Menno Home in Grunthal, Man., at the age of 96 years.
She will be sadly missed by one son Jacob and wife Joanne, sister Tina Froese, brother Ben and wife Agatha, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by husband Peter D. Sawatzky in 1981; her parents, Peter and Susana Voth; brothers, Johan, Heinrich, Peter, Cornelius; and sisters, Susana, Anna, Helena, Nettie, and Agatha.
Maria married Peter in July of 1936. Their first home was at The Pas, Man., working on a dairy farm. Maria had the misfortune of losing a couple fingers through a freak accident, but that did not keep her from doing her work. She was a determined lady, but had a very quiet and gentle nature. She had a strong faith and that helped her through many difficult times. They lived in Winnipeg for a number of years, where both were employed. She loved being a house cleaning lady, where she met and made many friends. After Peter passed away she was very lonely and decided to move into the Grunthal units, where she was quite independent for a couple of years. In 1997 she moved to the Menno Home.
Maria loved visitors, and as long as she was able she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and patchwork quilting.
We sincerely thank the Menno Home staff for the excellent care they gave so willingly. God bless you richly for each cup of water you give to those in need.

WAYNE GILBERT FREUND
Mr. Wayne Freund, aged 45 years, of Winnipeg, Man., passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2005 at his home.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his brothers: Richard Freund (Kimberley) of Winnipeg, Robert Rosner (Marcela) of Los Angeles, CA, Raymond Rosner (Marilyn) of Vancouver, B.C., Timothy Rosner (Angelle) of Vancouver, B.C.; his sister: Gladys Derksen (Rick) of Steinbach, Man.; also his nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Ferdinand Freund, in 1960; his mother, Alvina, in 1976; and his stepfather, Gustav Rosner, in 1984.
Wayne was actively involved in the Goodbye Jitters Toastmasters Club #8688, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was proud of his accomplishments and established many friendships. He will be missed.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, 7:30 p.m., in the Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach, Man., with Pastor A. Maier officiating. The service will terminate at the chapel.

ALEXINA DHAENE (BRODEUR)
May 25, 1922 to Sept. 12, 2005
Peacefully, Sept. 12, 2005, Alexina Dhaene, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away at Villa Youville in Ste. Anne, Man. (her new home since July 6), at the age of 83. Mom was predeceased by her son Raymond D., her brothers and sisters, and other family members.
She is survived by her son Marcel (Eileen), grandchildren Chuck and Ashley; daughter-in-law Lorraine Dhaene, grandchildren Jeff Dhaene, Roxanne (Dave), Patrick (Crystal), plus newborn great-grandchild Sydney Raymond D'haene, born March 4, 2005. Also mourning her loss are her many friends, uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces.
Mom enjoyed her work at the West Inn Downtown until she broke her arm and retired to La Broquerie, Man. From there her time was spent with many friends and family. Those were good times. Only on that day when she had her stroke did her peaceful little homestead come to an end. She spent some time in Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, Man., then moved to St. Adolphe, Man. These days were difficult for her. She then moved to Ste. Anne, Man. on July 6, which was just one more stepping stone to joining her loved ones. Now she felt content, happy to see her friends, and ready for the next step. She will be sadly missed by all here, but her famous words were "Take one day at a time." "Bye Mom."
The funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, 11 a.m., at the Roman Catholic Church in La Broquerie. Interment at the church cemetery.

BARBARA ALICE VANDAL (nee Burns)
Oct. 10, 1935 — Sept. 15, 2005
It is with great sadness we announce the death of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Barbara Vandal, Sept. 15, 2005 at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Man., at the age of 69 years.
Barbara is survived by her three children: Debbie (Len) Broesky, La Broquerie, Man., Ted (Lynne) Vandal, Marchand, Man., Joe (Cheryl) Vandal, Winnipeg, Man; seven grandchildren: Steven and Ryan Broesky, Melissa, Scott (Ashley) Vandal, Samantha (Jerrold), Megan and Katie Vandal; one great-grandson, McKenzie Vandal. She also leaves to mourn her passing, seven sisters: Ruth (Allan) Burr, Goodlands, Man.; Grace (Ralph) Wastle, Winnipeg, Ruby McDonald, Giroux, Man., Margaret (Aime) Boivin, Giroux, Mary-Lou Adams, Steinbach, Jean (Ed) Boivin, Giroux, Diana (Charles) Cyr, Giroux; two brothers: George (Francis) Burns, Thunder Bay, Ont., Stan (Carm) Burns, Winnipeg; sister-in-law and best friend Lucy Burns, Ste. Genevieve, Man; sisters-in-law: Bernadette Boivin, Giroux, and Dolly Ronellenfitch, Irwin, Alta. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Lou Vandal (1999); brothers, David Burns (1998), Leslie Burns (2000); and her parents, Alexander Burns (1989) and Mary Burns (1979).
Funeral services were held at the Steinbach Funeral Home, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Norman Broesky officiating.
The family would like to thank Dr. David Horne for his compassionate care. Also, a heartfelt thanks for the extraordinary and compassionate care shown to our mother and ourselves by the nursing staff on the second floor of the Bethesda Hospital, especially Cheryl and Candace.

PHILIP K. GERBRANDT
Peacefully, Sept. 16, 2005, Philip K. Gerbrandt passed away at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Man. at the age of 72 years.
Funeral service took place Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, 2 p.m., at the Reinland Mennonite Church, Grunthal, Man. Interment followed the service in the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church Cemetery, Stuartburn, Man.

MICHAEL PARSON
1931 — 2005
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Parson, peacefully, following a brief illness, at the age of 74, Sept. 20, with his family by his side at Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, Man. He will be sadly missed by his immediate family and friends.
Mike is survived by his wife Joyce Anne; three sons, Michael James (Patti), Gregory Dean, Walter Thomas (Joanie); grandchildren, Tara (Ty), Justine, Rika and Jakim (Jake); great-grandson Aiden.
He was predeceased by his sister Sally and parents, Jakim and Pearl Parson.
Mike was born in 1931 in Admiral, Sask. and then moved to Estevan, Sask. to begin his life with Canadian Pacific Railway. It is there he met and married his wife Joyce Ann English of Gull Lake, Sask.
From there they began to build their family and with that they bloomed three sons (Jim, Greg and Tom) through his career, with the later addition of four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. After retirement, with 41 years of not booking sick one day, he took up his dream of building his own workshop, where he spent many hours building several ornaments that decorated their three-acre yard. People traveled to Sandilands to see Mike's wonderful yard and creations. His love for his yard and ornaments was his second calling.
Mike was also an avid traveler across Canada and the United States. He loved to cross-country ski the paths of Birds Hill and other parks of Canada with Joyce at his side. He also loved to hike in the summertime, and take his son's dogs for walks. Mike and Joyce also loved to camp and canoe on their travels and several times found themselves in trouble, but were able to pull through.
However Mike found his family activities came first, his love for the railway and his friends were a close second! His desire to further his career was quite evident and successful from his move from Saskatchewan to Manitoba. He found it very hard to retire, but soon found the pleasures of his retirement did allow enough time to fully enjoy his growing family, to travel to his Pioneer days in Rollag, Minnesota, where he continued to help out each year as the Station Agent. Mike will dearly be missed by all who knew him.
Joyce would like to express her appreciation to the staff of the Steinbach hospital, Dr. Toews, Cancer Care girls Maggie, Angie, Tanya and Linda, as well as to the staff of the Manitoba Cancer Care Winnipeg, Dr. Huston, Dr. Johnstone, Irana, Barb and Nancy, also all others who helped him through his short battle with cancer.
Upon Mike's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Mike's memory to the Manitoba Cancer Care clinic, Salvation Army or the Humane Society.

PETE TARASENKO
1919 — 2005
On Sept. 30, 2005, Peter Tarasenko of Steinbach, Man. passed away at the age of 86.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jessie; children, Peter (Sandra) of Winnipeg, Man., Carol (Bernie) of Calgary, Alta., Joyce (Robert) of LaSalle, Man., and Gary (Kim) of Red Deer, Alta.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, with ash interment at Heritage Cemetery.
