Jacob Wiebe
Our husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Jacob Wiebe, passed away early in the morning on August 17, 2008 at the MacGregor Personal Care Home.
He was born on June 22, 1925 to parents Henry and Sarah Wiebe at Neu-hoffnung, Manitoba. Here dad received his education. He worked on the family farm until the age of 20. At this stage in his life, he went by train to Sudbury, Ontario and worked in a mine. After this he was employed at various farms until 1955 when he decided to go to work at Main Centre Saskatchewan. Here he met Susie Penner (nee Knelsen).
Jacob was baptized on the confession of his faith in the spring of 1955. Jacob and Susie were married on July 10, 1955. For the first four years of their married life they farmed at Neu-hoffnung. In 1959, they moved to MacGregor where they operated a grain and dairy farm.
Dad served as a songleader in our church for approximately 40 years as well as serving in many other church related positions. In 1979, they moved to the town of MacGregor. Here dad worked as a carpenter for a year, and then went on to work as the custodian at the MacGregor Elementary School for seven years. In his retirement years, he spent much energy into a large variety of carpentry projects. Jacob built bowls, hopechests, swings, gliders, deacon benches, various toys and many other items. He took much pride in what he did and loved sharing them with his family. During their retirement years Jacob and Susie enjoyed a bus tour to the east coast as well as a trip to Niagara falls with their friends, Ed and Helen Penner. Over the years his health deteriorated and he spent the last 15 months of his life in the MacGregor Personal Care Home.
Jacob is predeceased by his parents and one sister Sarah.
He is survived by his wife, Susie, six children, Nellie (John) Reimer of MacGregor, Ed (Joyce) Wiebe of MacGregor, Arnold (Anne) Wiebe of MacGregor, Jane (Henry) Dyck of Edrans, Della (George) Wieler of Schanzenfeld , Flora (Ben) Peters of MacGregor, twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Henry, John, Peter, Cornie and Abe as well as one sister Annie.
We would like to thank all the staff at the MacGregor Personal Care Home for their excellent care of Jacob in his final days.
Funeral service was held Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the MacGregor Sommerfeld Church with Rev. John Unrau officiating and Dorothy Unrau presiding at the piano. Pallbearers were Bruce Reimer, Andrew Wiebe, Byron Wiebe, Darrell Dyck, Shawn Wieler and Travis Peters. Ushers were Andy Knelsen, Brad Wiebe, Bill Reimer and Marv Giesbrecht.

“Massy”
Mikkum – Minash – Ice Bird
Massy was born on September 8, 1983 in Gladstone, Manitoba. Massy passed away in Brandon Hospital on Sunday, August 16, 2008 at the age of 24 years.
Massy was into the healing journey and he always encouraged everyone to smudge and follow their traditional ways. He was also the lead singer in a pow-wow group called Sweet Grass Ojibway. Massy’s friends will miss him and carry on with all the songs that they had shared. Massy's godparents Stanley Hobson & Loretta Roulette and their daughter Doris Roulette will also miss him.
He was predeceased by his father Kenneth Clements Roulette; his auntie Loretta; uncles Freddie and Robert; as well as two cousins Sherman Richard and Keith Roulette (Dipper).
He leaves to mourn his passing, his mother Elsie Linda Anne Roulette; four brothers and three sisters Kenneth Roulette Jr. (“Sam”), Beverley Roulette (Johnny) their three kids Frederick, Gregory, and Coltin; William, Patrick and his two kids Kyla and Christina; Peter (Missy), Mona (Harvey) and their baby Haylee, Edna and her two kids Billy and Junior.
Massy will be sadly missed by his whole family.
Wake service began at the Roulette residence in Sandy Bay.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Sandy Bay First Nation on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Interment followed in the Sandy Bay Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronnie Desjarlais (tuk-tuk), Ronald Desjarlais, Norbert Richard, Devon Abigosis, Joseph Houle, and Jonathan Mousseau. All friends and family are considered honourary pallbearers.

Janet Isobel Johnston (McRae)
September 1, 1923 to August 25, 2008
Janet Johnston was born on September 1, 1923 at Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the only child of Norman and Hannah McRae of the Pine Creek area. Her education took place at Gillespie, Norfolk and Deer Range Schools.
Following her schooling she worked as a domestic helper for various neighbors in the Pine Creek district, moved to Winnipeg and worked in a sewing factory. Janet was always interested in taking care of others, and decided that nursing was her calling. In 1948 she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse from Concordia Hospital. Following graduation she came to the Gladstone with fellow graduate Welly (Kempf) Bjarnarson and nursed in the Gladstone Hospital and Medical Clinic.
In June of 1952 she married Bill Johnston at the Manse of the Gladstone United Church. They began their life together on the Family Farm where they raised their family of four. As a full time Mom her days were filled with caring for her family, home and community. She fulfilled many roles: 4-H leader, director of the Gladstone Agriculture Society, lifetime member of the Livingstone Women’s Institute and the Gladstone United Church Women, Seven Regions Health Auxiliary, volunteer driving for the Cancer Society and for Meals on Wheels.
As her family grew up and moved on with their lives, Janet decided that she would return to the nursing profession. She attended Red River College and took a refresher course in 1974 and started back to working part time at the Gladstone Hospital. Her passion was always to help others in sickness and in health. She truly fulfilled this desire in the role of a nurse. Upon her retirement in 1991, she turned her interests to being a grandmother and being around her five grandchildren. She was truly happy when her children and grandchildren were around. Mom also had time to pursue other interests such as quilting, cross stitch and knitting. Mom was happiest when her hands were busy and there were people around her.
In their retirement, Janet and Bill were able to enjoy traveling to England, Scotland and Ireland as well as trips within Canada to Expo’ 86, the East Coast and to Churchill. Janet always kept in touch with relatives and when traveling to the East would stop to visit with them all in Ontario.
Janet was a member of the Gladstone United Church and her strong faith was a source of strength to her throughout her life. Everyone in the family will always remember how much she loved to lead us all into church, especially when everyone was home on occasions such as Christmas.
With Bill’s passing in 2006 and her deteriorating health, Mom continued to live in her own home with the support and care of many dedicated homecare staff. She enjoyed her sun room and keeping track of her cat, Mikey, along with counting the blooms on her hibiscus plant. On August 11, 2008, Mom was hospitalized in Portage and returned to Seven Regions Health Centre for palliative care on August 13, 2008. Throughout her final days all her children and grandchildren were able to be with her and to enjoy moments of laughter and tears. Janet passed away peacefully in the early morning of August 25, 2008, surrounded by family members.
Janet will be deeply missed but never forgotten by her family, Nora (Ed) Stroeder and Sarah; Bill (Bonnie) Johnston, Alanna and Aimee; Helen (Barry) Greene and Caitlan; Joanne Johnston and Andrew; special family friend Tom Baker of Carberry, MB.; cousins Rae (Louise) McCallum and their family of Thetford Mines, Quebec; Morden (Donna)MacRae and family of Nepean, Ontario; and Marion MacLeod of Kanata, Ontario, along with other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2006 and her parents Norman and Hannah McRae.
Janet’s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to all those individuals who have been a part of her life especially to her friends, neighbors, the retired nurses group and to her homecare staff who made it possible for her to live in her own home. To the medical, nursing and support staff of Seven Regions Health Centre, thank you for taking such kind and compassionate care of Mom and us during her final days. We are eternally grateful.
Funeral service was held Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gladstone United Church with Rev. Ian Olive officiating. Interment followed in the Gladstone Cemetery.

Calvin W. Henry
With deep sadness we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather Calvin (Cal) Henry on Friday, September 5, 2008 at Portage General Hospital at the age of 67 years.
Cal was born January 2, 1941, the only child of Simon and Jean Henry (Glover). He lived all his life in MacGregor, MB except for short times away while he worked on construction. In the spring of 1962 he went to work for Don Barber (later J.D. Barber Sand & Gravel Ltd.), and for the next 45 years he worked for people he respected and cared for, at a job that he loved.
On October 19, 1961 he married Joan Poulton and they raised three children, who gave him nine grandchildren who were his great joy.
He was a man of decided opinions tempered by a wonderful quirky sense of humour and with deep loyalty to the people he cared about. He had a love of nature, enjoyed camping, and had an ability to keep vehicles and implements working “just a little longer”. He leaves a deep hole in our lives (and an empty chair at the coffee shop where he and the guys daily solved the problems of the world.)
He is predeceased by his father Simon, mother Jean, several aunts and uncles, and his cousin Valerie.
He leaves to mourn his passing wife Joan; daughters Kelly and Wendy; son Kevin and daughter-in-law Patty; grandchildren Tamara (Dave), Jody, Greg, Marcel, Laurie, Jillian, Shawn, Kolby and Kendall.
Cremation has taken place and a family graveside service was held on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 with a time of remembrance at the MacGregor Memorial Hall at 2:00 p.m..

Margaret Emily Snell
1911 – 2008
Margaret was born in Winnipeg July 14, 1911 to Harry and Mary Grimwood. Her parents had immigrated from England and Ireland in 1905. She had one sister, Kathleen Malby, who predeceased her in 1972.
Margaret graduated from Manitoba’s Provincial Normal School (Teacher’s College) in 1932. While waiting for a teaching position, she worked at Holt Renfrew in Winnipeg where she did custom alterations to clothing for their customers. In 1935 she received her first teaching appointment to Blake School in the Ogilvie district where she taught in the one room schoolhouse until 1940. She boarded with local families and became life long friends with Grace and Edie Adamson (nee Jameson). She was active in local Ogilvie community activities, box socials, dances and plays. On October 05, 1940 she married Reuben Edwin Snell and farmed in the Ogilvie district. In March 1945 she gave birth to twin daughters, Kathleen and Carol, who passed away the same day. In November 1946 she gave birth to a son James Frank. He now lives in Armstrong, BC and is married to Ann. They have a son Barton, a daughter Trina and a granddaughter Terica. In August 1951 Margaret gave birth to a son Edward Harry who is married to Hilda. They now live in Gladstone, MB.
Her love of children and teaching was still in her blood and she returned to teaching at Soudan School in 1960 where she taught until the school closed in 1966. She then received a position at the Burton School in Helston where she taught until this school closed in 1968. She taught at Plumas Elementary School until she retired in 1976.
In 1978 the family farm was sold and the farmhouse moved to its current location in Gladstone. In December 1979 her husband Reuben passed away suddenly.
Margaret loved to compete. She actively participated each year in the Plumas Fair with her flowers, garden goods, baking, canning and sewing. One year she won enough prize money to purchase her first electric Sunbeam Mixmaster. All preparation of baked goods up to that point was done with a wooden spoon and a hand-crank egg beater. In her retirement years she took up quilting and won several prizes at the Gladstone Fair.
One of these quilts “Bed of Peonies” was cut and sewn starting in the fall of 1986 and completed in 1987. This won first prize at the Gladstone Fair. The regional convention of the Women’s Institute was held in Gladstone in the spring of 1997. The quilt was entered on behalf of the Livingstone Institute and was voted the people’s choice to go onto the provincial convention in Brandon later that year. Three quilts from the provincial convention were chosen to go to the Centennial Convention in Hamilton, Ontario, June 17-22, 1997. The Centennial Convention was celebrating 100 years since the inception of the Women’s Institute at Stoney Creek, Ontario, in 1897. The Women’s Institute is known in Canada as the Federated Women’s Institute of Canada and worldwide as the Associated Country Women of the World with 70 participating countries. The “Bed of Peonies” quilt won 1st place and was voted peoples choice by Centennial Convention attendees. Margaret was active in her new Gladstone community. She was two term president of the Livingstone Women’s Institute in 1981-82. She was president of the Seven Regions Health Auxiliary in 1981 and received a Life Membership Pin. She was a member of the United Church Women. She received the Red Cross Service Pin for her work and donations of knitted goods and blankets for young babies.
You have been a wonderful mother and we are sad that you are now gone. You have left us with an everlasting legacy of warm memories, but we will miss your presence. We will celebrate your good life and we will derive strength from your peace with the good Lord looking after you.Funeral Service was held Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gladstone United Church with Rev. Ian Olive officiating. Interment followed at the Plumas Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred James, Murray James, Barry Gillman, Herb Starke, and Harold Rosling. Attending in a group were members of the Gladstone U.C.W.

Richard (Dick) Harder
Passed away suddenly at his home on September 24, 2008 at the age of 75 years.
Richard (Dick) was born in Winkler, MB on August 21, 1933. He lived in the Altona area until the age of 7 years when the family moved to Virden, MB. He attended the local school there and worshipped at the Oak Lake Church until he left home. He married Danella Wolfe on May 26, 1963 at the Altona Bergthaler Church. Together they moved around the province while Dad worked different jobs. They finally settled in the Bagot, MB area in 1973 and finished the raising of their 5 children. He moved into Portage la Prairie, MB in 1991 where he lived until his passing.
Dad was predeceased by his parents; 3 brothers and three sisters. He is survived by 3 brothers Abe, Isaac and Dave and 3 sisters Elizabeth, Agatha and Kaye. Also left to mourn his absence are 5 children Sharon (Kevin), Sandra (Kirt), Rick, Norma and Ted; 11 grandchildren Shane, Joshua, Jasmine, Stephanie, Eric, Dustin, Charlie, Bronson, Christina, Josiah and Sara; and 1 great grandchild Evian.
Dad always worked hard and was quick to lend a helping hand to others along the way. He enjoyed a good cup of coffee and good conversation. Despite suffering poor health the last few years, he was concerned about others well-being right to the end.
Viewing was held Friday, September 26, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in Clarke’s Funeral Chapel, MacGregor.
Funeral service was held Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the West End Community Church, MacGregor with Victor Funk officiating. Interment followed in the MacGregor Cemetery.

William (Bill) Rempel
Bill Rempel of Neepawa, MB (formerly of Plumas, MB) passed away on Friday September 26, 2008 at the age of 79 years.
Bill was born June 7, 1929 at Lowe Farm, Manitoba. He was the eldest son of Jake and Sarah Rempel.
He worked in road construction most of his life and ran his own business for many years. Bill loved sports. He played hockey and ball for many years and he passed on his love of sports to his sons and grandchildren.
Bill leaves to mourn his wife, Viola (Fischer) of 58 years; his sons Fred (Elene), Dewayne (Sherrilyn), Bob (Barb), Ward (Jean-Ann), Kelvin (Tracey); 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; his brothers, brothers-in-law, sisters and sisters-in-law as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and at Bill’s request, a private family interment will take place in the Plumas Cemetery at a later date.
