COOLEN, David Bruce "Shaft"

Hubbards, passed Friday, March 27, 2009, at home. Born in Halifax, he was the son of Frances (Dauphinee) Coolen, Fox Point and the late Burton Coolen. David loved the outdoors; he enjoyed camping, fishing and was a carpenter by trade. The sparkle in his eye was his children and grandchildren. Survived by his children, Tracy, Anna, David (Kelly), Jackie and Ben; grandchildren, Paige, Raidyn and David J.; sisters, Lorraine (Svein) Stokkeskog, Tantallon; Doreen (Gary) Christie, Head of St. Margaret's Bay; brother, Donald (Linda), Halifax; companion, Debbie. He will be missed by his favourite cat "Shelby". The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday March 29, funeral service 11 a.m. Monday, March 30, both from Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards, Rev. Laurie Omstead officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and/or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

BROOKS-HEBB, Muriel Alberta

83 years, of Centrelea, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2009, in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in Bridgetown, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Alberta (Chute) McLaughlin. Muriel retired from United Elastic after many years. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and crafts. Muriel was a member of the Centerlea Women's Institute. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by daughters, Joan (Chester) Barteaux, Lawrencetown; Rita Lewis, Centrelea; Audrey (Joe) Balcom, Varner Mt. Road; sons, Allan (Janice) Brooks and Richard Brooks, both of Centrelea; sisters, Alice White, Middleton; Thelma Brooks, Nictaux; Beverly Silvers, Billingham, Mass.; brothers, Frank (Louise) McLaughlin, Grimsby, Ont.; William McLaughlin, Medway, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur Brooks; second husband, Carl Hebb; brothers, Ronald and Charles McLaughlin; a daughter in infancy and two grandchildren. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, March 29, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 30, in Round Hill Cemetery, Rev. Herb Anderson officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service in Centrelea Community Center. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the charity of choice.

BRIMICOMBE, Frances Margarite

Age 70, of Twin Rivers Trailer Court, Stellarton, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary Site, QEII. Born in Catalina, N.L., she was a daughter of the late William and Hazel (Sheppard) Wicks. Frances was a resident of Stellarton for the past 23 years. She was a former employee of Edward's Fine Foods and a member of Our Lady Of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church. She enjoyed knitting, cooking, baking and reading. Frances is survived by her husband; Walter; daughters, Linda Wicks, Ontario; Judith Mouland, Moncton; Kimberly Collins, Stellarton; son, Chris Collins, Prince Edward Island; stepchildren, Mark Brimicombe, Jennifer Robinson, Julie Brimicombe and Meredith Brimicombe, all of Nova Scotia. Francis will be sadly missed by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Edward, Lester, William Jr., Angus, David, Terry, Paul and Jack Wicks, all of Newfoundland; sisters, Debbie Young of Edmonton and Agnes Mercer of Newfoundland, also by a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary MacLaughlin. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. Public memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday from Our Lady Of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Burial at a later date. Donations in memory of Frances may be made to a charity of one's choice. A reception will follow the service in Sister Catherine Steele Center. Arrangements are under the direction of H.W. Angus Funeral Home.

MURPHY (Atkinson), Beulah Avis

Roseway Manor, Shelburne, formerly of Clark's Harbour, passed away peacefully in Roseway Manor, Shelburne, on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. She was born in Clark's Harbour on November 5, 1912, the only daughter of the late Millage and Elizabeth (Lowe) Atkinson. After completing high school in Clark's Harbour, she enrolled in the Whidden Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Everett, Mass., and received her diploma as a registered nurse in 1934. In 1942, she married Charles J. Murphy and together they owned and operated Murphy's Funeral Home in Everett, Mass. Upon Charlie's death in 1957, Beulah became a funeral director in her own right and operated the business until 1973 when she moved back to to the family home in Clark's Harbour. In 1999, due to ill health, she became a resident of the Manor in Shelburne where she was "one of the family", so lovingly cared for by the staff until her passing. She was always very active in her community and loved life on the island. She was at her happiest sharing the company of her family, her relatives or her many friends and could always find a reason to entertain them, which she did to perfection. She was predeceased by her only brother, George A. Atkinson and her niece, Marina (Atkinson) Nelson. Memories of her life will be a treasured legacy to her family and she will be lovingly remembered by her niece, Catherine J. Nickerson; nephew, George M. Atkinson (Marlene), their families, her relatives and many special friends. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. today in H. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Barrington. There will be a memorial service 2 p.m., Sunday in St. Phillips Roman Catholic Church, Barrington, Father Pat O'Meara officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Everett.

THIMOT, Marie Rose

88, Saulnierville, passed away March 26, 2009, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Saulnierville, she was a daughter of the late Jean P. and Annie (Comeau) LeBlanc. She is survived by daughter, Pearl Ann (Ricky) Comeau, Saulnierville; granddaughter, Gail Comeau (Gilles), Concession; sister, Adele Ouellet, Saulnierville; brother, Delbé (Jeanne) LeBlanc, Saulnierville. Predeceased by husband, Edward Thimot; brother, Ulysse LeBlanc. Visitation will be held Monday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Meteghan Funeral Home. Funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Saulnierville, Rev. Paul Belliveau officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Sacred Heart Church, Saulnierville.

HANSFORD, Cynthia Kaye

60, Pictou, died March 25, 2009. A daughter of the late Melville and Rena Hansford. Surviving are daughters, Sherri (John Kilburn) Noel, Elizabeth Gene Fortune, Marie (Tracy) MacCarthy; grandchildren, Danton, London, Nicholas, Meadow, Megan; brothers, Mel (Marilyn), Randy (Wendy); sisters, Freda (Clarence), Bonnie; uncle, Lowell (Jean) Ferguson; aunts, Lillian Clarke, Elsie Ferguson. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday in St. James Anglican Church, Pictou, Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Burial in Seaview Cemetery. WAMBACK, Cynthia Roxanne

50, of Allendale, passed away at home on March 27, 2009, with her family by her side. Born in Sandy Point, she was a daughter of the late James and Hazel (Blades) Benham. Cindy worked as a PSA at the Lockeport Regional High School. She was a member of the Federation of Labour and President of Service Employers International Union of Nova Scotia. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Wamback; sons, Jeremy (Alisha), Halifax; Brenden (Haidi), Toronto, Ont.; James (Sarah), St. Anne de Rousseau; niece, Shannon, Lockeport; nephews, Allan, Connectcut and Thomas, Lockeport. Visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Lockeport. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Lockeport Regional High School Auditorium with Pastor Bethe Cameron officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Victorian Order of Nurses. The family would like to give special thanks to Alberta Morash and the local VON for their care and support.

HILTZ, Graham Christopher

45, Truro, passed away suddenly Friday, March 27, 2009 in Truro. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Carroll and the late Theora (Steele) Hiltz. Graham was plant supervisor at Thermo-Cell Industries, Debert. Graham's passion was working on projects in his garage (the dog house) and spending time with his family and friends. Kind and caring, when anybody needed help he was the first one to step up and lend a hand. Graham's family and friends were very important to him and this was evident in his everyday life. He loved each one of them. Surviving is his wife, Cyndi Walker; daughter, Jessie, Vancouver, B.C.; sons, Zachary (Holly Griffiths), Truro; Samuel at home; brothers, Danny (Julia), Minesville; Randy (Penny), and David, all of Dartmouth; nephews, Robert, Gregory and Eugene. A gathering to celebrate Graham's life will take place 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 1 in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

McCARRON, Brian William

35, North Grant, Antigonish Co. It is with great sadness the family of Brian McCarron announce his death on March 28, 2009. Born in Antigonish, he was a son of Hugh and Margaret (Kennedy) McCarron. Brian was a graduate of Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional in 1992. He was self-employed in residential construction as a drywaller. He was a member of the Carpenters and Jointers Union. Brian will be remembered for his kind heart, love of animals and for the pride he took in his work. His nieces and nephews were the light of his life. Besides his parents, he is survived by brothers and sisters, Garry (Monica), Markham, Ont.; Helen (Tom Gillis), North Grant; Donna (John) McCann, Calgary; John-Hugh (Kerry Ann), North Grant; Donnie (Lee), North Grant; Alice, Halifax; nieces and nephews: Gabrielle, Mairi, Duncan, Paul, Ryan, Sarah, Kelly, Hugh, Richard and Matt McCarron; Margaret Ann and Janice Gillis; Maureen and Katie McCann. Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in St. Mary's Church, Maryvale on Wednesday, April 1 at 11 a.m. with Father Anthony presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Antigonish.

WALTERS, Sylvia Effie

67, of Cowie Hill, Halifax, formerly of Yarmouth, passed away on March 26, 2009 at the VG Site, QEII. Sylvia was the daughter of the late Lyndon H. and Margaret E. Cann (Brittain). She moved to Halifax in her late teens. She was employed at Yarmouth Ice Cream & Dairy, the Grace Maternity Hospital and People's Credit Jewelers. She then took a position at Melville Nursing Lodge for the last sixteen years, retiring due to poor health. She was a member of the Pleasant Lake United Baptist Church in Yarmouth County. Sylvia was a people person. She loved spending time with her family and she gathered a host of friends throughout her life. She loved the birds and animals and took in all the strays she came across. She especially loved her dog "Bud". She loved flowers and tended her flower beds faithfully. She is survived by her former husband, Alan; son, Mark, Cowie Hill; brothers, Charles, Yarmouth; Malcolm, Cowie Hill; John (Debbie); sisters, Helen (Donald A.) Gavel, Yarmouth; Beverly Desrochers, London, Ont.; Donna King, Dartmouth and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Bryce and her sister-in-law Dorothy. Visitation will be held Monday, March 30 from 7-9 p.m. from Sweeny's Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place Tuesday, March 31 at 2 p.m. from Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dennis Leamont officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Hebron, Yarmouth County. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, the Tri-County Victorian Order of Nurses or charity of choice.

76, of Hantsport, passed away Friday, March 27, 2009 in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on October 16, 1932 in Saint John, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late George and Jean (Ward) Arenburg. Surviving are her daughters, Faye (Edward) Graham, Kentville; Joan MacDonald, Windsor; Nancy Connors, Wolfville; Monica (MacDonald) Blanchard (Greg Coldwell), Windsor; sons, Earl "Butch" Connors, Wolfville; Kenny Connors, Upper Falmouth; grandchildren, Randy Graham, Robbie Graham, Wayne Wile Jr., Iris Wile, Wanda Wile, Michael Connors, Michelle Connors, D.J. Connors, Andrew Connors; great-grandchildren, Cody MacDonald, Sasha James Wile, Moesha Wile, Arisa Wile, Eric Wile, Earle Smith-Wile, Kendra Wile, Andrew Graham, Hunter Graham, John Blanchard, Brandon Graham, Briana MacDonald and Marisa Connors; sisters, Jessie (Oscar) Langdon, Hantsport; Janice (Whitfield) Garland, Hantsport; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by, her husband, John Ira Sr. "Jack", (February 21,2000); son, John Ira Jr., (September 28,1997); grandson, Dennis Connors, (August 25,1982); sister, Bernice "Penny" Briggs, (October 1997). Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2009 in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend E.E. Hill officiating. Interment will be in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Family flowers only. Donation in memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Lung Association of Nova Scotia or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

McNUTT, Phyllis Emily

94, of Princess Street, Springhill, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2009, in All Saints Hospital, Springhill. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late William and Sarah (Arseneau) James. She is survived by daughters, Judy Bryan, Springhill; and Marion Johnson, Parrsboro; five grandchildren, Peter Maltby, Susan Lawson, Randy Bryan, Terry Ann Erb and Kathy Bryan; 14 great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Douglas; brothers, William and Raymond; half brother, Albert. Arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill, (902 597 2361). Cremation has taken place, burial will take place in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, at a later date. There will be no visitation or Memorial Service held.

WALTERS, Frederick Simon

73, Middle LaHave, passed away Friday, March 27, 2009, at home. Born in Middle LaHave, he was a son of the late Edgar and Maisie (Lohnes) Walters. An avid outdoorsman, Fred was blessed to be able to earn a living working on his farm surrounded by the environment that he loved. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him. Fred is survived by his sisters, Grace Irwin of California; Catherine (Bernard) Himmelman, Bridgewater; Maxine McDonough, Lower Sackville; brother, Llewellyn (Marjorie) Bridgetown/Pinehurst and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Helena Reynolds, Verna McDonough and Louise Meisner. A graveside committal service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Middle LaHave Cemetery, Middle LaHave, Rev. Reginald MacDonald officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Parkinson's Society of Canada, Maritime Region, or to South Shore Regional Hospital, through the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway #3, Lunenburg.
