at Rapelje Lodge, Welland, on Thursday, January 9, 2003 in her 92nd year. Predeceased by her husband Louis and her parents Hubert and Helen Coard. Beloved mother of Louis Masanto and his wife Gisele of Welland, Winston Masanto of Toronto, Franklin Masanto and his wife Ann and Roland Masanto and his wife Garcia all of Brooklyn, New York. Also loved by her grandchildren Danielle, Jonathan, Luther, Ashley and Corie. Dear sister of Ivy Coard and her daughter Laura Radix and her son Dwight. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be conducted Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 1557 Pelham Street, Fonthill, on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at 11:00 am with The Reverend Canon David Browning officiating. Mr. John Frederick Bernardus Brinckman

in Welland on Friday, January 24, 2003. Mr. John "Dutchie" Brinckman of Welland in his 79th year. Beloved wife of the late Harmke Brinckman (1988) and loving father of Fenna Lawson and husband Keith of Angus, Rina Foley and husband Art of Bath, Suzanne Brinckman and her husband Garth MacDonald of Wylie Texas and Sylvia Brinckman-Bean and her husband Chas of Bragg Creek Alberta. Also loved by his grandchildren Phillip, Jessie, Shawn, Christina, Meredith, Morgan, Travis and his great-grandson Ian. Brother of Wout and his wife Paula, Coba, Floortje and their families all in Holland. Friends will be received by the family from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Monday at the JAMES L. Elizabeth Helene Flett

passed away at home in Welland August 13, 2002 in her 80th year. Originally of Sydney Nova Scotia. Beloved wife of the late John Alymer Flett (Niagara Falls). Loving Mother of John Frederick (Danielle) of Welland. She will be fondly remembered by her two grandsons, Noah and Colby. Predeceased by her brother Joseph Kennedy and survived by her sister Gertrude Goss. At the request of Mrs. Flett, there will be no funeral home visitation nor funeral service. Mrs Emily "Cowan" Burwash

died peacefully after a brief illness, on Sunday, January 5, 2003 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Malcolm Edward Burwash (1999). Loving mother of Hazel Ann Blew (Douglas) of Niagara Falls, Ontario and Joan Lowry (Randall) of Woodstock, Ontario. Proud grandmother of Laura Blew (Charles Flaherty), Barbara Blew (Ronald Delanghe), Brian Blew, Pamela Duncan (George Ardies), Emily Duncan, Jeffrey Lowry and Sarah Lowry. Great-grandmother of Michael, Sarah, Jacob and David Flaherty and Brooke, Ben and Claire Delanghe. Emily was born on a farm in Carberry, Manitoba, the eldest daughter of Robert Jardine Cowan and Eliza Ann Ardron. She is survived by two younger sisters Hazel McNaught and Pearl English and was predeceased by two older brothers Alvin and Leonard Cowan. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Winnipeg General Hospital and became a flight attendant during the early days of passenger service with Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada), where she met her husband Malcolm. Later transfers took them to Toronto, Winnipeg and Ottawa where they raised their family. After Malcolm's retirement in 1973 they travelled in Canada, United States and other countries from their home in Fonthill. Emily's positive approach to life, her strength, humour and commitment to others was an inspiration to her family and friends, who loved her dearly. The family will receive friends at the JAMES L. PEDLAR FUNERAL HOME - DIXON CHAPEL, 1292 Pelham Street, Fonthill on Friday, January 10, 2003 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm at which time a Memorial Service will be conducted in the Chapel, followed by a reception at Fonthill United Church at 3:00 pm. Mr Harry Haggerty

after several months of failing health Harry passed away peacefully at the Welland County General Hospital, on Monday, January 6, 2003 in his 82nd year. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Ruth (Easterbrook) whose love he shared for over 56 years. Their devotion and respect for each other was a true example of the love of the Lord at work in their lives. Harry was a very proud and loving Dad to his daughter Joy (Steele) Cross-Landon and her husband David Landon of Midland, Grandpa to David Cross and his spouse Alison Passmore and her daughter Ashley of Aurora and Joanne Cross of Hawkestone: son Bill and his spouse Pat Cassellman of Frankford and Grandpa to Meghann, Lyndsay and Jared Haggerty of Waterloo and Jamie and Jordan Haggerty of Madoc: and daughter Janis and her husband Alan Alsop of Cary, North Carolina, Grandpa to Jennifer Alsop of Toronto and Gordon Alsop of Waterloo. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Mabel Haggerty (1961), his mother-in-law Lena Easterbrook (1982), his sister Eva (2001), Eva's husband Gord Easterbrook (2002) who was Dad's best friend all his life, and his son-in-law Roger Steele (1969). At the age of nine Harry had polio and wasn't expected to live, but the prayers of friends, family and God's will got him back on his feet in a year. After finishing school he started an apprenticeship at Stokes Rubber / Mansfield Denman General as a mechanical designer where he dedicated himself to his career for 36 years. Harry was a lifelong member of Pelham Evangical Friends Church where he served as clerk, elder and taught the Adult Sunday School Class for 25 years. Over the past 10 years he held weekly Bible study classes at his home. He also served as president of the Talbot Trail Scouting Association in the 1960's. Harry was full of life and laughter and loved to tell stories, especially about the settlement of the Pelham area by the United Empire Loyalists and the Quakers. Harry and Ruth were members of the Friends Historical Society and were instrumental in seeing that the historical records of the Church dating back to 1779, were preserved in perpetuity in the Friends Church Archives at Pickering College in Newmarket. Friends will be received by the family from 7-9 pm Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 pm Wednesday at the JAMES L. PEDLAR FUNERAL HOME-DIXON CHAPEL, 1292 Pelham Street, Fonthill. The funeral service will be conducted at Pelham Evangelical Friends Church, 940 Haist Street, Fonthill, on Thursday, January 9, 2003 at 11:00 am with Pastor Matthew Chesnes officiating. Interment Pleasantview Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of Pelham Evangelical Friends Church.

Mr Arthur William Utz

of Ridgeville, on Thursday December 5, 2002, at St. Catharines General Hospital, in his 86th year. Left to mourn: his beloved wife of 54 years Doris (nee Hamilton), son Allan and his wife Rebecca of Fonthill, Carol of Ridgeville and David, also of Ridgeville, sisters Erma Reed, Freida and her husband Herb Pakrul, four grandchildren Stephen, Stewart, Tyler, Cora-lee and his brother-in-law Leonard Kramer. He is predeceased by his parents Minnie and Fred Utz, sister Helen Kramer, infant brother Allan and his two brothers-in-law Rudy Sodtke and Allan Reed. Arthur served four years in the Armed Services during World War II. He has been a life-long member of the Lutheran Church serving in different capacities, on church council, teaching Sunday School etc. He enjoyed working with Youth in Venturers' Group (Boy Scout movement). He was a past member of the Optimist Club in Simcoe and Brantford. Arthur retired in 1987 as General Manager of the local Textile Manufacturing Plant in Welland. He and Doris enjoyed many years of travelling. Friends will be received by the family from 7-9 pm. Sunday December 8th and 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Monday December 9th at the JAMES L. Mrs Velma Frances "Gilmore" Cooley

passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, January 30, 2003. Mrs. Velma Cooley of R.R.# 3 Fenwick, in her 67th year. Beloved wife of Ivan S. Cooley. Mrs Adriana "VanBruggen" Murdock

at St. Catharines General Hospital, on Monday, February 3, 2003. Mrs. Adriana "Adri" Murdoch of Fonthill, in her 80th year. Beloved wife of the late Frank Murdoch (1983). Dear mother of Carol Hardy and her husband Doug of Fonthill. Loving grandmother of Jeff Hardy (Amy VanVeen) of St. Catharines and Erin Hardy (Brian Rehus) of Windsor. Dear sister of Riet Monas of Holland and predeceased by her sister Graat Spelten. Survived by several nieces, nephews and their families all in Holland. Adri will be sadly missed by her very dear friends Bep, Cathy, Edna and Gail. Adri enjoyed a rich and full life. She was a devoted grandmother and enjoyed painting, gardening and reading. She was a lover of animals, nothing made her smile more than spending time with pets of family and friends. The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Wednesday at the JAMES L. Mr Douglas Arthur Lane

Following a full and active life, Doug Lane of Fonthill passed away at St. Catharines General Hospital on February 4, 2003 with his family by his side. Dearly beloved husband of Eleanor (Gale), dear father of Chris (Bronwyn) and loving grandfather of Samuel. Doug was a well known Ontario Land Surveyor throughout the Niagara region. He actively supported several charitable organizations and was a former longtime member of Fonthill Lions Club. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Arlene and brothers Vincent and Gordon. Survivors include brother-in-law Reg Gale (Norma) of Mount Forest, sister-in-law Muriel Lane of Smithville and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation has taken place. At Doug's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Mr Melville Ross Johnston

passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, December 16th, 2002, in his 67th year. Beloved husband of 46 years to Jacqueline (Coutu) Johnston. Dear father of Sharlyne Houde and her husband Yvon and their daughters Shannon and Staci; Shirley King and her son Benjamin (Courtney) and his father Wayne King; Richard Johnston and his wife Willow and their daughters Chelsey, Amanda and Tara; Rodney Johnston and his wife Linda and their children Sandra and Scott. Mel was predeceased by his parents William Ross Johnston and Mary Elizabeth (Dobson) Johnston, sister Shirley Smith and brother Robert. He will be sadly missed by his sisters Delores and her husband Paul Edwards of Toronto, Elizabeth and her husband Edward Kelly of Calgary, Beverley Johnston of Toronto and brother Paul Johnston and his wife Ann of Toronto. at Greater Niagara General Hospital, on Friday December 20th 2002. Bill Watson of Fonthill, in his 67th year. Beloved husband of Kathy and loving father of David Watson and his wife Maria of Niagara Falls, Scott Watson of St. Catharines, and Donna Watson at home. Also loved by his grandson Stefan. Predeceased by his first wife Sandra Watson (1985) and his parents Stanley and Angela Watson. Bill is survived by his mother-in-law Thelma Arbour and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and their families. Bill was a long time educator with the Welland County Roman Catholic Separate School Board and a very active member of St. Alexander's Catholic Church. Mrs Elizabeth Hollington "Lang" Peat

died suddenly at home in Fonthill Ontario Canada,on December 24, 2002, in her 93rd year, after a very brief illness at home. Daughter of the late Col. W.R. Lang and Edith (Daisy) Hollington, Elizabeth was the wife of the late J.R. MacDonald (Don) Peat; mother of Dr. Marjorie Henderson, Nora Peat and Daniel Peat; sister of the late Dr. Janet Ross, the late Margaret (Bunty) Donaldson and Vernon Lang. She is survived by her three children; her brother; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Kaye (John); and her son-in-law the Rev. Harvey Henderson; her daughter-in-law, Iraina Neufeld; six grandchildren, Brill Pappin, David Piers Pappin, Ben Pappin, Donald Henderson, Christopher Henderson and Emma Peat; and twelve nieces and nephews and their children. She was a graduate of Havergal College and the University of Toronto (B.A., B.Paed.), where she was active in a Model League of Nations, and in anti-war work with the Youth Council. During her years in Niagara she worked as a secondary school substitute teacher, and as a teaching assistant at Brock University, and was involved with the National Ballet Guild, then with the Pelham Historical Society and the Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society (PALS). Elizabeth was active until the end, planting bulbs in her garden last week, and was heard correcting her son's grammar on the evening she died. Her family will miss her love and guidance. Special Thanks to Dr. Shari Fallis, CCAC Niagara, and the Red Cross homemakers who enabled her to maintain her independence. Visitation, following cremation, at the Pedlar Funeral Home, Fonthill, 1pm to 4 pm. Sunday. Funeral at 11:00 am. on Monday, December 30th at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Fonthill. Mr Michael John Vasselsue

(Graduate of OAC' 40, recipient of University of Toronto Chancellor's Award, retired employee of Union Carbide) Suddenly passed away at Welland General Hospital on Sunday, December 29th, 2002, in his 91st year. Predeceased by his beloved wife Mabel Audrey Vasselsue (nee Cameron) on April 4th of this year. He will be greatly missed by his children Janice and her husband Rudy, Brian, Kirk and his wife Carolyn, Wendy and her husband Steve. Dear brother to Nancy. Predeceased by his sisters Margaret, Annie, Dora, Lillian, Jessie and his brothers Dick, John, William (Billy) and Tom. At the request of Mr. Vasselsue cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be conducted at Brethren in Christ Church, 50 Lincoln Street, Welland, on Friday January 3rd at 11:00 am with Pastor Gord Gilmore officiating.
