FLEURY
Laurier Evans Fleury passed away in the Kamloops, B.C. Royal Inland Hospital September 8, 2003. Laurier came to Brooks in 1944 with his parents Cliff and Alice Fleury. He attended school in Brooks.
After leaving school he worked part time in his father’s masonry business. Soon after he opened a domestic water hauling business. Laurier was also a race car enthusiast, and built and operated a race track on his property just north of Brooks. He was also a lover of birds, especially pheasants. He constructed a bird sanctuary on his property for pheasants and exotic birds and opened it to visitors. These two special interests became part of “Prairie Vacationland” which he opened on his north property in 1966.
From water hauling, he became involved in oilfield trucking as oil drilling boomed in the Brooks area. As his trucking business grew, he moved to the Calgary area. He subsequently sold his business and moved to Celista, B.C.
The following is taken from the Salmon Arm Shuswap Bulletin, September 17th & 19th, 2003:
“Sorrento lost part of its soul on Monday, September 8, when Laurier Fleury died in Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital. Born in Gleichen, Alberta on June 28, 1931, Laurier arrived in the Shuswap in 1978 and moved to Sorrento in 1982. Laurier and his wife, Mandi Baker, became widely know for their large collection of live pheasants and peacocks which were viewed by thousands of visitors and residents at Pheasant Heaven. He was responsible for much of the development on the south side of the highway in Sorrento, building the Shoppers’ Plaza, the pharmacy building and Toby’s, along with the Horizon condominiums and the new home for Curves, which was the Sorrento Hardware building. Two years ago, he established Toad Hall, a place for the community to gather. This year’s Flea and Crafters Market, along with a dedicated shop for the Woodworkers’ Guild, are the first steps toward his vision of an Artisan’s Village in Sorrento. During his years here, he became Shuswap Lake’s fishing guide extraordinaire.
Laurier was predeceased by his father Cliff and his former wife Lorraine. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Mandi, partner and best friend; his mother Alice; sisters Theresa (Eric); Elaine (Mike); brothers Robert (Mary), all of Brooks, Alberta; Leonard (Gladys) of Coaldale, Alberta; Adrien (Laura) of Edmonton and their families, and by his former wife Dorothy and four step-sons, Mark, Wade, Kevin and Aaron.
